Guide to driving in Barbados with a Malawi licence.
A non-resident visitor with a valid Malawi driving licence may drive in Barbados in the vehicle class covered by that licence. Barbados abolished its separate Visitor Driving Permit on 15 October 2025, and current government guidance does not require an International Driving Permit (IDP). No Barbados-government recommendation or separate translation rule for Malawi licences was verified. The checked sources do not establish a fixed visitor driving limit.
The essential test is whether your Malawi licence is valid and authorises the vehicle you intend to drive. An expired licence or a vehicle outside its licensed class is not covered by the visitor rule.
Malawi and Barbados are separate countries and both appear as parties to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic in the United Nations Treaty Collection. Barbados Revenue Authority applies a general rule to non-resident foreign visitors: they must hold a valid driving licence. It does not identify a separate Malawi-only procedure. Barbados law distinguishes vehicle classes, so do not assume that a motorcycle, commercial vehicle or another class is covered by a Malawi car entitlement.
The Barbados Revenue Authority policy note does not require an IDP in addition to the visitor's valid national licence. A Barbados-government recommendation specifically to carry one with a Malawi licence was not verified. If you nevertheless obtain an IDP, the relevant model is the 1949 Geneva Convention permit: Malawi Road Traffic (Driving Licences) Regulations prescribe Form A for 1949 Convention countries, and both countries are parties. Malawi's Director may issue it to qualifying residents who have held the national licence for at least one year. Its stated validity is 12 months. It does not replace the national licence.
A separate Barbados requirement for translating a Malawi licence was not established: unverified – confirm with official authority if the document's details cannot be readily read.
The current Revenue Authority notice removes the old permit system but gives no fixed number of visitor driving days for Malawi licence holders. Do not treat the former two-month permit price bracket as a current driving limit. The Barbados Licensing Authority describes transfers of non-national licences, but the eligibility, tests and deadline for a Malawi licence holder who becomes resident are unverified – confirm with official authority before relying on visitor treatment after a change of status.
Rental conditions are separate from the law permitting a visitor to drive. These two companies publish terms that accept an original or valid national licence.
| Company | Published conditions | Terms checked |
|---|---|---|
| SunCars Rentals Barbados | Original licence from country of issue, driver over 25 with at least two years licensed, credit card required. Medical certificate for drivers aged 75–80. | Terms of hire |
| M.A.H Car Rentals | Valid home-country licence. States that an international licence is not required. Ages 25–80, at least two years experience, medical certificate for drivers over 75. | Terms and conditions |
For rentals generally, the Revenue Authority requires the agency to verify the licence. The vehicle-rental levy is BBD 5 per day, capped at BBD 35 per rental. Neither the checked companies nor the government sources establish a Malawi-specific rental restriction.
Section 74 of the Barbados Road Traffic Act requires a driver to have a driving licence or government-issued identity card for inspection when requested by police or a uniformed transport inspector. Bringing the original Malawi licence avoids having to rely on an identification document that does not show the vehicle class. Sections 37 and 42 require third-party motor insurance or qualifying security for the vehicle and possession of the insurance certificate, which must be produced on request.
M.A.H includes basic rental insurance but states exclusions for tyres and rims. SunCars publishes optional additional protection and contract-dependent excess amounts. Read the specific rental agreement rather than assuming that holding an IDP changes insurance cover.
Older Barbados government pages still instruct tourists to buy a Visitor Driving Permit. The Revenue Authority's later policy note expressly abolished that requirement from 15 October 2025 and is the relevant source for current visitor procedures. A local rental company's minimum age or medical-certificate rule can still prevent hire even when the visitor is legally entitled to drive. The special 12-month foreign-licence exchange rule published for certain CARICOM freedom-of-movement nationals does not establish a period for Malawi licence holders.
Take your current physical Malawi licence, confirm the vehicle class and check the exact hire terms before booking. An IDP is not a requirement in the Barbados Revenue Authority's current visitor procedure, although a 1949-model Malawi IDP is available to eligible applicants. For a non-English or unclear licence, or a move from visiting to residence, check directly with the Barbados Licensing Authority before driving.
