Car Rental Notes

Barbados Revenue Authority requires renters to present their valid licence at booking or pickup. Sixt Barbados requires the original licence held for two years, a passport or identity document, and drivers aged at least 25 for its listed classes. Its IDP rule concerns non-Roman alphabets, unlike a Spanish Argentine licence. Drive Barbados requires an original national licence held for three years and says an international licence is not required. Drive Barbados still publishes an obsolete visitor-permit statement, which is superseded by the Revenue Authority's 2025 policy. Confirm the company's current booking terms.

Police & Enforcement

The verified visitor rule requires a current national driving licence, and the Barbados Revenue Authority requires that licence to be shown to a rental agency. No authoritative, up-to-date checklist for additional documents demanded at a roadside stop was verified. Carry the physical Argentine licence and identification as practical precautions.

Insurance Information

Sixt Barbados states that its rentals include third-party liability protection and that its contractual protection becomes void if an unauthorised driver uses the car or the driver lacks the required licence at the time of the event. Drive Barbados states that its vehicles include third-party liability insurance and renters remain responsible for vehicle damage under its terms. These are company policies, not a blanket rule for every insurer or proof that an IDP is an insurance condition.

Exceptions & Special Cases

The temporary-stay rule excludes disqualified drivers, requires drivers aged at least 18, and covers only authorised vehicle classes while the Argentine licence remains valid. The earlier visitor-registration and fee requirement in the published 1960 Order was removed by the Barbados Revenue Authority's policy effective 15 October 2025. Specific Argentine resident-conversion rights and deadlines were not verified.

Our Recommendation

Bring your valid physical Licencia Nacional de Conducir and use only its authorised vehicle classes. An IDP is not needed under the verified Barbados visitor rule, but the Automóvil Club Argentino offers the 1949 Geneva model as useful supplementary documentation, particularly for a Spanish-language licence. Check the rental company's age, licence-history and insurance rules before paying. If your stay stops being temporary, ask the Barbados Licensing Authority about local licensing.

Driving in Barbados with an Argentine Driving Licence: IDP Requirements and Rules

Yes. A visitor holding a valid Argentine national driving licence can drive in Barbados in the classes shown on that licence. The verified rule does not require an International Driving Permit (IDP) or a separate Barbados visitor permit. The allowance is for temporary stays of up to 12 months from the last entry, while the licence remains valid. No separate English translation requirement was established for an Argentine licence.

Quick answer

For an ordinary visitor, the original Argentine licence is the controlling document. An IDP may help explain a Spanish-language licence, but does not replace it.

Legal recognition of the Argentine licence

Paragraph 4(1) of Barbados's Road Traffic (Motor Vehicles (International Circulation)) Order, 1960, recognises a valid domestic driving permit issued outside Barbados for a temporary visitor. It limits driving to vehicle classes authorised by that permit. Argentina's government describes its nationally issued licence as an internationally usable document and notes its standardised format. The verified rule is not a special bilateral exemption for Argentina.

The United Nations treaty record separately confirms that both Argentina and Barbados are parties to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic. Their common participation supports the convention context, but the Barbados domestic-permit rule directly establishes the visitor entitlement.

IDP requirement, recommendation and translation

The Barbados Order permits either a qualifying convention driving permit or a foreign domestic permit, so the Argentine licence need not be accompanied by an IDP under that rule. Argentina's Automóvil Club Argentino (ACA), an issuer of international permits, encourages travellers to obtain one for overseas driving. That guidance is not an additional Barbados legal requirement.

If obtained, the relevant model is the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP. The Barbados Order reproduces that model and ACA identifies its Geneva 1949 issuance. ACA says the document lasts one year or until the Argentine licence expires, whichever comes first, and must be carried with the national licence.

The Argentine licence uses Spanish and Latin characters. No separately compulsory certified translation was found in the checked Barbados visitor rule. Sixt Barbados's published extra-document requirement applies to licences printed in a non-Roman alphabet, not to ordinary Spanish-language licences.

Visitor period and becoming resident

The published Barbados Order allows driving for up to 12 months from the visitor's last entry, but only for a person making a temporary stay and only while the foreign permit remains valid. This is not a general right to keep driving indefinitely after taking up residence. An Argentina-specific resident exchange or conversion deadline is unverified – confirm with official authority through the Barbados Licensing Authority before relying on the visitor rule as a resident.

Renting a car

The Barbados Revenue Authority says a visitor must present a valid driving licence to the rental agency when booking or collecting a car. It also requires operators to check that licences are current. The Car Rental Levy introduced on 15 October 2025 is BBD 5 per rental day, capped at BBD 35 per rental, replacing the old visitor-permit process.

Drive BarbadosOriginal national licence held at least three years, at least age 21 for some car classes, and no international licence required.Drive Barbados rental terms, checked 2026-10-24

Drive Barbados's page still describes the abolished visitor permit as mandatory. On that point, follow the newer Barbados Revenue Authority rule, not the outdated rental wording.

Documents and insurance

The licence must be valid and cover the vehicle. A renter must show it to the rental agency. The checked official material did not establish a separate list of documents that Barbados police demand at roadside checks, so do not assume that an IDP is routinely requested.

Insurance conditions depend on the rental contract. Sixt says its protection is void if the driver is unauthorised or lacks the required licence when an incident occurs. Drive Barbados includes third-party liability insurance while leaving renters liable for damage under its published conditions. Neither company's wording establishes a general legal obligation for Argentine visitors to carry an IDP.

Material exceptions

The visitor-driving provision sets a minimum age of 18, does not protect a driver disqualified by a court, and never authorises driving a class excluded from the licence. Rental minimum ages can be higher. The foreign-licence privilege also ends when the licence itself ceases to be valid.

Practical recommendation

Travel with the physical Argentine national licence and, if you want an additional multilingual document, obtain the genuine Geneva 1949 IDP from ACA before departure. Ask the chosen rental company to confirm acceptance of the Spanish-language licence and its age, licence-history and insurance terms. Do not pay for the discontinued Barbados visitor permit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, if it is valid, covers the vehicle you drive, and you are making a temporary stay. The Barbados Order provides a foreign-licence allowance of up to 12 months from your last entry.

The verified Barbados rule accepts a valid foreign domestic licence without requiring an IDP. Barbados abolished its separate visitor driving permit on 15 October 2025.

The relevant convention model is the 1949 Geneva IDP issued by the Automóvil Club Argentino. It supplements rather than replaces the original Argentine licence.

The Barbados visitor rule checked does not impose a separate certified English translation for this licence. Sixt Barbados requires extra documentation for non-Roman-script licences, a condition that does not ordinarily apply to Spanish.

The published temporary-visitor provision allows up to 12 months after the last entry, provided the licence stays valid. It does not establish a resident conversion right, so check with the Barbados Licensing Authority if you become resident.

Sixt Barbados asks for an original licence held for two years and sets a minimum age of 25 for its listed classes. Drive Barbados requires three years of licence history and has different vehicle-age restrictions. Ask the company you choose to confirm its current terms.
