Guide to driving in Barbados with a Arkansas licence.
A holder of a valid, unrestricted Arkansas driving licence can drive an ordinary car in Barbados during a temporary visit. Barbados abolished its separate Visitor Driving Permit on 15 October 2025, and its current guidance does not impose an International Driving Permit (IDP) requirement. AAA recommends an IDP for overseas travel, but this is advice rather than Barbados law. An English-language Arkansas licence needs no separate translation under the requirements found. The published visitor rule allows up to 12 months from last entry, subject to its conditions.
A rental agency must verify that the home licence is valid and current. Individual companies may also require a passport, payment card and minimum driving experience. These rental conditions are separate from the legal recognition of the Arkansas licence.
Arkansas is a U.S. state, and Barbados is a separate sovereign country. Barbados's published International Circulation Order recognises a domestic driving permit issued abroad for someone making only a temporary stay, restricted to vehicles authorised by the licence. The United States and Barbados are both parties to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic. An unrestricted Arkansas Class D licence authorises ordinary noncommercial driving, not every vehicle class.
The 15 October 2025 Barbados Revenue Authority policy requires visitors to hold a valid driving licence, without listing a separate IDP. An IDP is therefore not an additional legal prerequisite identified for a standard Arkansas visitor. AAA, a U.S.-authorised issuer, recommends getting one for overseas travel generally. If obtained, the relevant U.S. document is the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP, carried alongside the Arkansas licence, not instead of it. Neither the current Barbados guidance nor Enterprise's English-script rental policy identifies a certified translation requirement for the ordinary English-language licence.
Paragraph 4 of the published International Circulation Order allows a person making only a temporary stay to drive for 12 months from the last entry, for the authorised vehicle class and only while the home licence remains valid. This is a calendar-month and temporary-stay rule, not an unconditional number of days. The published consolidation also contains the now-obsolete visitor registration step, superseded by the 2025 Revenue Authority policy. The Barbados Licensing Authority offers overseas licence transfers with proof of residency, but a specific conversion deadline for an Arkansas holder was not verified. Ask the Authority before relying on visitor rules after relocating.
The Revenue Authority's 2025 policy makes rental agencies responsible for checking that a visitor's licence is valid and current. At Enterprise's Grantley Adams International Airport branch, foreign renters must show their original physical licence and passport and a payment card in their name. An IDP or notarised English translation is requested only for licences whose characters are not English or Latin. Enterprise also requires three years of licence-holding history, and has age-based vehicle restrictions for renters aged 21–24. These are Enterprise terms, not general Barbados driving law. The Barbados car-rental levy is BBD $5 per rental day, capped at BBD $35 per contract.
A valid driving licence is the documented legal basis for visitor driving, and it must be shown to the rental operator. The exact extra documents demanded during a roadside police check under the post-2025 system were not established, so keep the physical licence accessible. Enterprise says third-party liability coverage is included in its airport branch's rental rate, subject to the rental agreement. Its collision damage and theft waiver is optional, with separate exclusions and deductible terms.
The International Circulation Order's recognition does not extend beyond the vehicle categories actually authorised by the home licence, or to drivers disqualified by a relevant court order. Arkansas Class D is an ordinary noncommercial licence. It should not be confused with category D in the 1949 IDP format, which refers to vehicles carrying more than eight passengers besides the driver. For motorcycles, check that the Arkansas licence includes the appropriate motorcycle class or endorsement. Enterprise's minimum licence-holding period may exclude a newly licensed visitor.
Bring the original Arkansas licence and ensure it is current, unrestricted for the planned vehicle and legible. Do not pay for the former Barbados Visitor Driving Permit. An optional 1949-model IDP may still be useful, but it does not replace the licence or the rental agreement. Verify the selected operator's age, driving-experience, insurance and payment terms before booking. If settling in Barbados, obtain individual advice about licence transfer from the Barbados Licensing Authority.
