Guide to driving in Barbados with a Angola licence.
Yes. A temporary visitor can use a valid Angolan driving licence in Barbados for a vehicle class it authorises. The published international-circulation order accepts foreign domestic licences without requiring an International Driving Permit (IDP) and specifies 12 months from the last entry. Barbados abolished its separate Visitor Driving Permit on 15 October 2025. An official translation requirement for this pair remains unverified.
The essential conditions are licence validity, the correct vehicle class and temporary-visitor status. Rental-company rules are separate.

Paragraph 4(1)(b) of the Road Traffic (Motor Vehicles (International Circulation)) Order, 1960 recognises a domestic driving permit issued in a country outside Barbados. That wording covers a qualifying Angola-issued licence without relying on a bilateral agreement. It covers only the classes or descriptions of vehicle that the licence authorises. Angola’s Direcção de Trânsito e Segurança Rodoviária (DTSER) identifies categories including B for motor vehicles, A for motorcycles and other categories, but the licence actually held determines entitlement.
An IDP is not a separate legal prerequisite for the domestic-licence route stated in paragraph 4(1)(b). The United Nations lists Barbados as a party to the 1949 Geneva Convention, but does not list Angola as a participant in the 1949 or 1968 road-traffic conventions. A specific treaty-based IDP model for Angola to Barbados is therefore not established by those records. No official Barbados recommendation to carry an IDP for an Angolan licence was verified. The applicable official translation rule is unverified – confirm with official authority. SIXT has a separate rental requirement for licences printed in non-Roman script, not a destination-wide legal rule.
The published 1960 Order permits driving on a foreign domestic licence during a temporary stay for 12 months from the date of the last entry, provided the licence remains valid and the driver meets its conditions. This is not an unconditional right to remain in Barbados for 12 months. The newer Barbados Revenue Authority policy abolished the visitor-registration and permit process from 15 October 2025, even though some older official web pages still describe it. The Barbados Licensing Authority offers transfer of non-national licences with proof of residency. A specific conversion deadline or automatic exchange entitlement for Angolan residents is unverified – confirm with official authority.
The Barbados Revenue Authority says renters must present a current, valid driving licence when booking or collecting a vehicle and operators must check it. Two published company policies illustrate why a valid licence does not guarantee rental approval.
| Company | Published requirement | Source checked |
|---|---|---|
| SIXT Barbados | Original valid licence held for at least two years, passport or identity card, minimum rental age 25. An international licence is required if the licence uses a non-Roman alphabet. | SIXT Barbados rental information |
| Chelsea Motors | Valid foreign licence held for at least three years, presented in person. Driver must be over 21 and under 80. | Chelsea Motors terms |
SIXT bases its script rule on the characters printed on the document. Before paying, ask the chosen company whether it accepts the actual Angolan licence presented. The car-rental levy introduced in October 2025 is BBD 5 per day, capped at BBD 35 per rental, and is not a driving-permit fee.
Under sections 74 and 42 of the Barbados Road Traffic Act, police may require production of a driving licence and insurance certificate or qualifying evidence. Carry the original Angolan licence and the vehicle insurance documentation supplied with the car. Section 37 requires compliant third-party-risk insurance or security for use of a vehicle on public roads. Under SIXT’s published contract, protection can be void if an unauthorised driver uses the vehicle or the driver lacks the required licence when a claim arises. That is a SIXT contractual condition, not a rule established for every insurer.
The published international-circulation order limits the temporary-visitor route to drivers aged at least 18 and excludes drivers disqualified from holding a Barbados licence. A driver cannot use this permission for a vehicle class absent from the Angolan licence. Rental eligibility may be narrower, as shown by SIXT’s age-25 threshold and Chelsea Motors’ licence-history condition. The CARICOM free-movement treatment available to certain regional nationals is not an Angola-specific exemption.
For a short visit, use your current physical Angolan licence only for its authorised vehicle category and have the rental company inspect it before payment. There is no longer a Barbados Visitor Driving Permit application. An IDP is not required by the cited domestic-licence provision, but ask the Barbados Licensing Authority about any translation concern arising from the wording or format of your particular licence. For a move to Barbados, check the licence-transfer process rather than assuming visitor recognition continues indefinitely.
Checked against the sources listed above on 2026-10-24. The 2025 Barbados Revenue Authority policy is newer than official pages still describing the discontinued Visitor Driving Permit.
