Guide to driving in Antigua and Barbuda with a Malawi licence.
A person holding a valid Malawi driving licence can use it as the home-country licence needed to obtain an Antigua and Barbuda visitor driving licence, but the Malawi licence alone is not enough to drive. The local temporary driving licence is required and can be issued for up to three months. The checked destination law and official visitor guidance do not make an International Driving Permit (IDP) a condition of that visitor licence.
For a Malawi visitor, the key document is the local temporary driving licence. Official Antigua and Barbuda tourism guidance says visitors should bring a valid home-country driving licence and purchase the temporary local licence. The statutory visitor licence may be granted for a period not exceeding three months.
Antigua and Barbuda and Malawi are separate sovereign states, so this is an international driving-licence situation rather than domestic recognition. Section 30 of the Vehicles and Road Traffic Act requires a driver to hold a driving licence, while section 40 creates a visitor route under which a bona fide visitor may be granted a temporary driving licence other than a chauffeur licence. The Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority states that a visitor renting a car should bring a valid driving licence from the home country and purchase the temporary local licence.
This means the Malawi licence functions as the underlying home-country credential for the visitor-permit process, not as a standalone licence that replaces the local permit. No exact mapping was verified between Malawi categories A1, A, B, EB, C1, EC1, C and EC and the vehicle classes that may be written on an Antigua and Barbuda visitor licence. Any conditions printed on the local licence must therefore control the vehicle the visitor actually drives.
The checked Antigua and Barbuda visitor-licence rule does not list an IDP as a condition for receiving the temporary licence, and current official tourism guidance describes the required visitor documents as the valid home-country licence plus the local temporary licence. On that basis, an IDP is not a separate legal prerequisite established by the sources checked. It also does not replace the local permit.
Malawi is a party to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic and Malawi regulations provide a 1949 Convention IDP form for use in 1949 Convention countries. The UN Treaty Collection does not list Antigua and Barbuda as a party to the 1949 or 1968 Road Traffic Conventions. Because of that, no convention-based IDP model was verified as the applicable legal model for this destination. No official Antigua and Barbuda recommendation to carry an IDP was verified.
Section 40 allows the local visitor driving licence to be granted for any period not exceeding three months. Because the statute states the period in months rather than a fixed number of days, no day total should be inferred. The section applies to a bona fide visitor. A separate resident conversion deadline, exchange right, testing exemption, or grace period for a Malawi licence holder was not verified and is unverified – confirm with official authority.
Rental policy is separate from the law. Hertz at V C Bird International Airport states that the driver must present a valid national driving licence and that a local permit, available at the counter, is required. The same Hertz page says an International Driver's Licence is not accepted for rental. SunCars Antigua requires the original driving licence from the country of issue and says the local Antigua and Barbuda driving permit is mandatory. SunCars also confirms that holding an international driving licence does not remove the local-permit requirement.
Section 41 of the Vehicles and Road Traffic Act requires a driver to produce the driving licence for examination when required by a police officer. The checked sources did not establish a separate roadside rule requiring a Malawi licence or IDP to be produced in addition to the local visitor licence.
No insurance rule specific to Malawi licence holders was verified. If a visitor brings a private motor car or motorcycle into Antigua and Barbuda, section 29 requires compliance with the law protecting third parties before the temporary vehicle licence is issued. Rental insurance terms remain contractual. For example, SunCars publishes its own liability and extra-protection terms for its vehicles.
The visitor temporary driving licence is expressly not a chauffeur licence, so it should not be treated as authority to drive for hire or reward. The licence may also be issued subject to conditions. Exact treatment of each Malawi vehicle category, resident conversion, and any special translation rule for the physical Malawi licence were not verified.
Travel with the original valid Malawi driving licence and obtain the Antigua and Barbuda temporary driving licence before driving. Do not rely on an IDP instead of the local permit. If renting, check the chosen company's current document policy before travel, because rental terms can be more restrictive than destination law.
