Guide to driving in Barbados with a Wyoming licence.
Yes. A valid full Wyoming driving licence is recognised in Barbados for the vehicle class it authorises. A separate International Driving Permit (IDP) is not legally required for an ordinary English-language Wyoming licence, and Barbados abolished its visitor driving permit in 2025. USAGov generally advises carrying an IDP abroad, but that is guidance rather than Barbados law. No separate English-licence translation requirement or fixed visitor driving period was verified.
The distinction is between the Wyoming licence itself, which qualifies as a foreign driving licence, and any extra document a rental operator might request.
| Question | Answer for a Wyoming licence holder |

| Vehicle categories | Wyoming Class C covers ordinary cars, Class M covers motorcycles. Other class equivalence is not confirmed. |
| IDP legally required | No separate IDP requirement identified for an English-language Wyoming licence. |
| IDP officially recommended | Yes. USAGov advises travellers generally to carry an IDP with their licence. |
| IDP model | 1949 Geneva Convention model, if obtained. Not a compulsory extra permit. |
| Licence translation | No separate translation requirement identified for the English-language licence. |
| Visitor driving period | No fixed Wyoming-specific maximum established. unverified – confirm with official authority |
| Rental requirements | Show a current original licence. SunCars also imposes licence-tenure, age and payment conditions. |
| Police and authority documents | Licence or government-issued ID on request. If ID is shown instead, produce licence within 24 hours at the designated station. |

| Key exception | Barbados abolished its Visitor Driving Permit on 15 October 2025. Restricted permits and vehicle classes need separate care. |
Wyoming is a U.S. state, while Barbados is a separate sovereign country. Section 2 of the Barbados Road Traffic Act recognises driving authorisation from another jurisdiction, and section 61 requires that authorisation to cover the vehicle being driven. Wyoming Class C is the ordinary non-commercial car category. Class M, not Class C alone, covers motorcycles.
This recognition comes from Barbados law, not a special Wyoming-Barbados agreement. Both the United States and Barbados are parties to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic, but convention membership does not create a separate requirement to purchase an IDP.
Neither the Road Traffic Act provisions checked nor the Barbados Revenue Authority's current visitor instructions impose a separate IDP on a holder of a valid English-language Wyoming licence. USAGov nevertheless advises U.S. travellers generally to carry an IDP with their domestic licence. This is a government recommendation, not a Barbados-specific legal requirement.
If you choose to get one, Barbados is listed under the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP model. USAGov identifies AAA and the American Automobile Touring Alliance as U.S. issuers. An IDP supplements the Wyoming licence and never replaces it. No separate translation requirement was identified for the English-language licence.
For visitors, the confirmed condition is a valid licence appropriate to the vehicle. No fixed maximum number of visitor driving days applicable to Wyoming licence holders could be verified, so the former visitor-permit durations should not be treated as a driving limit.
The Barbados Licensing Authority offers an application to transfer a non-national driving licence and lists proof of residency. Whether a particular Wyoming licence qualifies for exchange, and any resident deadline, remain unverified – confirm with official authority. Visitor permission should not be assumed to settle resident licensing.
The Barbados Revenue Authority says renters must present a valid licence at booking or pickup and rental companies must check it. SunCars Rentals Barbados requires the original home-issued licence, at least two years of holding it, a driver older than 25 and no older than 80, and a credit card. It asks drivers aged 75 to 80 for a medical certificate. These are company policies and do not establish requirements for every operator.
Since 15 October 2025, a car rental levy of BBD 5 per day, capped at BBD 35 per contract, has replaced the visitor driving permit. It is a rental charge, not a fee for recognition of the Wyoming licence.
Under section 74 of the Road Traffic Act, a driver must produce a driving licence or government-issued identification card when asked by a uniformed police officer or transport inspector. Someone presenting only identification must produce the licence at a designated police station within 24 hours. A physical Wyoming licence is the simplest document to carry.
Section 37 requires third-party risk insurance or compliant security for vehicle use on public roads. SunCars publishes insurance and optional damage-protection terms, including different renter excesses. That contract should be checked separately from the legal right to drive.
A Wyoming learner permit is not equivalent to an unrestricted driving licence. Wyoming Class C also does not cover motorcycles, and recognition of commercial or specialist categories has not been established for this pair. Driver age or medical evidence may separately affect a rental, as SunCars terms demonstrate.
Some older Barbados government pages and the U.S. Department of State's Barbados page still mention purchasing a local visitor permit. The Barbados Revenue Authority's later policy note expressly abolished that requirement from 15 October 2025 and is the controlling update for that administrative step.
Bring the original, valid Wyoming licence for the exact class of vehicle you intend to use. Check the rental operator's licence-tenure, age and insurance conditions before booking. Do not pay for the abolished Barbados visitor permit. A 1949-model IDP is an optional companion document under general U.S. travel advice, not a substitute for your licence. For residence or unusual licence classes, ask the Barbados Licensing Authority for a determination.
Checked against the sources above on 2026-10-26. This is the verification date, not the date of any new rule. The separate Barbados visitor-permit abolition took effect on 15 October 2025.
