Guide to driving in Greece with a Texas licence.
A valid Texas driving licence is recognised in Greece because Article 98(3)(h) of the current Greek Road Traffic Code expressly covers licences issued by the United States for mopeds, motorcycles, motor tricycles, quadricycles and passenger cars. The appropriate licence category and Greek minimum age still apply. An International Driving Permit (IDP) and a separate translation are not legally required under this U.S.-licence route. Rental and insurance terms can still be stricter.
For ordinary visitor car driving, a valid Texas licence is enough under current Greek law. If you rent, check the company before travelling: Enterprise Greece says U.S. licences do not need an IDP, while Hertz Greece applies an IDP requirement to licences falling outside its named exceptions. An IDP can therefore be contractually useful even though Greek law does not require it for this pair.
Texas and Greece are separate jurisdictions: Texas issues driving licences as a U.S. state, while Greece is a sovereign country. Article 98(3)(h) of Greek Law 5209/2025 expressly recognises valid licences issued by the United States during the holder's stay in Greece. It names mopeds, motorcycles, motor tricycles, quadricycles and passenger cars. Article 98 also requires the driver to have the appropriate category and to meet the minimum age required for the corresponding Greek licence.
Texas Department of Public Safety issues non-commercial Classes A, B, C and M. Class M is the motorcycle class. The Greek statute does not provide a class-by-class equivalence table for every Texas entitlement, so this page does not treat Texas commercial or heavy-vehicle privileges as automatically transferable.
An IDP is not legally required for a valid Texas licence under Article 98(3)(h). That U.S.-specific paragraph also does not impose an official translation requirement. If an IDP is obtained because a rental company or insurer asks for one, U.S. IDPs issued by authorised issuers are based on the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic and must be used with the original Texas licence, not instead of it.
The U.S. Department of State identifies the American Automobile Association (AAA) and the American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA) as authorised U.S. IDP issuers. No Greece-specific government recommendation to obtain an IDP was verified for U.S. licence holders. AAA recommends IDPs for overseas travel generally. The practical need therefore depends mainly on the rental contract and insurance policy rather than Greek licence-recognition law.
The current Greek statute recognises a valid U.S. licence during the holder's stay in Greece and does not state a fixed maximum number of visitor days in Article 98(3)(h). U.S. State Department guidance separately says a Greek licence is required if a person stays more than 185 days. Because the current Greek primary law is more direct and does not express that cutoff in the U.S.-licence paragraph, no fixed visitor-day maximum is stated here.
Greece maintains an official procedure for converting a valid U.S. licence after the holder establishes ordinary residence in Greece. The National Registry of Administrative Public Services requires proof of ordinary residence and a translation of the foreign licence for that conversion process. A long-stay or resident driver should confirm the current timing with the competent Regional Transport and Communications Directorate.
Rental terms are separate from Greek law and are not uniform.
| Company | Requirement checked | Source checked |
|---|---|---|
| Enterprise Greece | U.S. national licences do not require an IDP. Drivers must present a full valid licence and valid identity card or passport, and the full licence must have been held for at least one year. | Enterprise Greece renter requirements |
| Hertz Greece | A valid national licence held for at least one year is required. Licences in its rest-of-world group require an IDP, and the United States is not in the no-IDP country lists on the checked Athens page. | Hertz Athens qualifications and requirements |
This difference is why rental_usually_requires is treated as sometimes rather than yes or no.
Article 103 of Greek Law 5209/2025 requires the driver to carry the lawful driving licence, vehicle registration, proof of insurance, road-tax receipt and any category-specific document that applies. It creates a specific rule for rental and leasing vehicles: they carry a copy of the registration and do not have to carry proof of insurance or the road-tax receipt.
The U.S. State Department advises travellers to review insurance before renting and says insurers may require both the valid U.S. licence and an IDP for coverage in Greece. Enterprise Greece states that supplemental liability protection required by Greek law is included in its rentals. Any additional coverage depends on the individual contract or policy.
The U.S.-licence recognition rule is limited to the vehicle types named in Article 98(3)(h) and does not itself establish commercial-driver or professional-vehicle privileges. The driver must still hold the appropriate Texas entitlement and satisfy Greek age requirements. For a Texas motorcycle licence, Texas DPS identifies Class M as the motorcycle class. Heavy, commercial and special categories should be checked separately before use in Greece.
The main unresolved point is long-stay timing. The current Greek code uses the phrase during their stay without a fixed day limit, while current U.S. State Department guidance uses a 185-day threshold. Travellers approaching a long stay or residence should confirm with the Greek transport authority rather than assume either source describes every resident scenario.
For a normal tourist car rental, carry the valid physical Texas licence and the passport or identity document required by the rental company. Do not buy an IDP because Greek law requires it for this pair, because it does not. Obtain the 1949 Geneva IDP if your chosen rental company, insurer or itinerary makes it useful. Verify the company's exact terms before paying for the booking.
If the stay may exceed 185 days or ordinary residence is being established, contact the competent Greek Regional Transport and Communications Directorate before relying on the visitor rule. Greece provides a formal conversion process for valid U.S. licences, and that conversion process requires translated documentation.
