Guide to driving in Greece with a Colorado licence.
A valid Colorado licence is recognized in Greece for passenger cars, motorcycles and other vehicle types covered by Greece's U.S.-licence rule when the licence carries the corresponding entitlement. An IDP is not legally required. AAA recommends one for overseas travel as issuer advice, not Greek law. A standard English-language Colorado licence needs no translation. The May 2026 Greek ministry circular says the rule covers temporary stay and habitual residence.
| Issue | Colorado licence holder in Greece |
|---|---|
| Can you drive? | Yes, with a valid licence and the corresponding entitlement for the vehicle. |
| IDP required by Greek law? | No for the listed U.S.-licence categories. |
| Translation? | No for standard English-language Colorado licence entries. Official translation is required only if the entries are neither Greek nor English. |
| Rental car? | Usually possible, but company IDP policies differ. |
Colorado is a U.S. state and Greece is a separate sovereign country. Recognition therefore comes from Greek law and administrative guidance, not from a Colorado-Greece domestic licensing system or an assumed bilateral agreement. Article 98 of the Greek Road Traffic Code includes valid licences issued by the United States for mopeds, motorcycles, motor tricycles, quadricycles and passenger cars. The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport circular dated May 13, 2026 applies that rule to U.S. state licences and includes Colorado in its U.S. classification table.
The driver must hold a valid Colorado licence that corresponds to the vehicle being driven. The special U.S. provision does not itself establish recognition for commercial truck or bus categories.
For the vehicle categories covered by the U.S.-licence rule, Greece does not make an IDP a legal condition when the driver already holds the valid Colorado licence. The separate Greek-law route that relies on an IDP is available to holders without normal residence in Greece and requires the IDP to accompany the valid national licence.
If a Colorado licence holder chooses to obtain an IDP, the U.S.-issued permit is the 1949 Geneva Convention model and must be used with, not instead of, the state licence. AAA, an authorized U.S. IDP issuer, recommends obtaining an IDP for overseas travel. That is issuer travel advice, not a Greek statutory requirement.
The May 2026 Greek ministry circular expressly explains that, for the U.S.-licence provision, stay in Greece includes both temporary stay and habitual residence. It does not state a fixed maximum number of visitor days for this route, so no fixed value is assigned here.
There is a material source conflict for longer stays. U.S. State Department Greece guidance issued February 19, 2026 says a Greek licence is required after more than 185 days. The later Greek Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport circular dated May 13, 2026 says the U.S.-licence rule covers habitual residence as well as temporary stay. This page follows the later destination-authority circular for the legal summary, while a long-term resident should confirm the current position with the competent regional transport authority before relying on it. The Greek National Registry also publishes a conversion procedure for valid U.S. licences when the holder has usual residence in Greece.
Rental-company documentation rules can be stricter than the law. Enterprise Greece says a U.S. national licence does not require an IDP and requires drivers to present a full valid licence held for at least one year together with a valid identity card or passport. SIXT Greece requires a full valid licence and identification but says licences issued outside the European Union must be complemented by an international driving licence.
| Company | Published requirement checked | Source checked |
|---|---|---|
| Enterprise Greece | U.S. national licence accepted without an IDP, with full valid licence held at least one year and identification. | Enterprise Greece Athens International Airport rental information, checked 2026-09-28. |
| SIXT Greece | Licence outside the EU must be complemented by an international driving licence, with the full valid licence and identification also required. | SIXT Greece rental information, checked 2026-09-28. |
The Greek ministry circular requires the driver to possess the valid national licence of the corresponding category. If the entries on a foreign licence are neither Greek nor English, an official translation must accompany it. For a standard Colorado licence with English entries, that translation condition does not apply.
No pair-specific Greek rule was verified that makes an IDP a universal condition of insurance coverage. U.S. State Department guidance says insurers may require both a valid U.S. licence and an IDP. That warning concerns insurer or contract terms and does not convert the optional IDP into a Greek legal requirement.
The U.S.-licence rule is category-specific. It names mopeds, motorcycles, motor tricycles, quadricycles and passenger cars, and the Colorado licence must contain the corresponding entitlement. Greek minimum-age requirements still apply. Commercial truck and bus recognition is not established by this special provision.
The IDP-only route in Greek law has a non-residence condition, while the separate U.S.-national-licence route is described by the May 2026 ministry circular as covering both temporary stay and habitual residence. Those two legal routes should not be conflated.
For ordinary passenger-car driving, carry the physical, valid Colorado licence and confirm that it covers the vehicle. No IDP is required by Greek law for the listed U.S.-licence categories, and no translation is needed for standard English entries. An optional 1949 Geneva Convention IDP is still sensible when the chosen rental company or insurer asks for one. Check those contract terms before travel rather than assuming every company follows the same policy.
For a long-term move, use the Greek conversion procedure or confirm the current position with the competent regional transport office because the later Greek ministry circular and the February 2026 U.S. State Department guidance are not aligned on the 185-day point.
