Guide to driving in Albania with a Colorado licence.
A holder of a valid Colorado driving licence can drive in Albania, but current U.S. Department of State guidance states that both the U.S. licence and an International Driving Permit (IDP) are required to drive legally. Albanian law permits foreign-licence use while the holder has not been resident in Albania for more than one year. The IDP does not replace the Colorado licence.
For a Colorado licence holder, the practical document combination is the original valid Colorado licence plus a valid IDP. U.S. government guidance expressly requires both for legal driving in Albania and says the same combination is needed to rent a car. Carry your passport and relevant vehicle documents as well.
Article 133 of the Albanian Road Code provides that drivers holding a foreign national driving licence or international driving licence may drive in Albania the vehicles for which that licence is valid, provided they have not been resident in Albania for more than one year. For a Colorado licence holder, current U.S. Department of State guidance adds the specific instruction that both the valid U.S. licence and an IDP are required.
The rule does not expand the vehicle categories authorised by the Colorado licence. Where a special vehicle also requires a professional qualification document in the issuing jurisdiction, Article 133 addresses the need for the corresponding qualification.
The U.S. Department of State states that a valid U.S. driving licence and an IDP are both required to legally drive in Albania. This is therefore treated as a legal requirement for this page rather than merely optional practical advice.
Albania and the United States are contracting parties to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic. AAA issues IDPs for U.S. licence holders under the Geneva framework. The applicable permit for a Colorado licence holder is therefore the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP. The IDP must accompany the national licence and does not replace it.
Albanian Road Code Article 133 ties foreign-licence use to residence rather than establishing a simple tourist-day allowance. It permits foreign-licence driving provided the holder has not been resident in Albania for more than one year, so max_visitor_days is not represented as a fixed number.
DPSHTRR publishes a foreign-licence conversion procedure that expressly covers valid licences issued by the United States for applicants holding an Albanian residence permit valid for more than one year. Its published conversion documentation includes the foreign licence with certified translation and other application documents.
The U.S. Department of State states that both a valid U.S. driving licence and IDP are needed to legally drive or rent a car in Albania. A rental company may impose additional contractual conditions.
SIXT Albania published rental information requires the driver to present a full valid driving licence together with an identity card or passport and states that licences printed in a non-Roman alphabet must be accompanied by an IDP. Its company terms should not be confused with the broader legal guidance applying to a Colorado licence holder.
U.S. Department of State guidance tells U.S. drivers to carry their passport, driving licence, IDP and vehicle registration or insurance documents while driving in Albania. No separate pair-specific insurance coverage rule was verified, so specific insurance consequences are unverified – confirm with official authority or insurer.
The main exception is residence. The foreign-licence rule changes after the holder has been resident in Albania for more than one year. Vehicle entitlement also remains limited to the categories covered by the valid licence, with additional professional qualifications relevant where required for special vehicle categories.
Albanian law also provides for an official Albanian translation or equivalent document when a foreign national or international licence does not conform to models established by international agreements to which Albania is a party. For the Colorado traveller using the required convention-format IDP with the original licence, no separate Albanian translation requirement was verified.
Obtain a 1949 Geneva Convention IDP in the United States before travelling and carry it together with the original valid Colorado licence. Also carry your passport and the vehicle registration or insurance documents. Check the booked rental company terms before collection because contractual age, licence-holding-period and vehicle-category conditions can be stricter than the basic legal documentation rule.
