Guide to driving in Greece with a Arkansas licence.
A valid Arkansas driving licence is recognised in Greece for the vehicle categories covered by the current U.S.-licence rule. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not legally required for those categories, and Greek law does not impose a separate translation condition on this U.S.-licence route. Current Greek sources say the licence can be used during the holder's stay, including ordinary and non-ordinary residence, although rental and insurance contracts can impose additional documentation requirements.
For a normal passenger-car trip, a valid Arkansas licence can be used in Greece without an IDP under the current Greek rule. Carrying an IDP can still be useful because a rental company or insurer may require one under its own terms.
Arkansas licences form part of the United States licensing system. Article 98 of Greek Road Traffic Code Law 5209/2025 recognises valid U.S. licences for mopeds, motorcycles, motor tricycles, quadricycles and passenger cars during the holder's stay in Greece, provided the licence covers the corresponding category and the driver meets the Greek minimum age.
The Greek National Registry, updated on 21 September 2026, states that U.S. licence holders may drive during their stay in Greece and that this includes both ordinary and non-ordinary residence. Arkansas Department of Finance identifies Class D as the regular non-commercial licence and the M endorsement as authorising motorcycles and related vehicles. Greek recognition does not expand the categories actually shown on the Arkansas licence.
An IDP is not a legal prerequisite for an Arkansas holder driving a covered vehicle because Greek law separately recognises a valid U.S. national licence. If an IDP is obtained in the United States, U.S. Department of State guidance identifies AAA and AATA as authorised issuers, and the U.S. IDP is based on the 1949 Geneva Convention. It supplements rather than replaces the Arkansas licence.
The U.S. Department of State's general driving-abroad guidance advises U.S. travellers to obtain an IDP from AAA or AATA. That is government travel guidance, not a Greek legal requirement. It can still matter where a rental company or insurer makes the IDP part of its contract.
No fixed maximum visitor-day limit was verified for the U.S.-licence recognition rule, so max_visitor_days is left NULL. The current Greek National Registry says a valid U.S. licence can be used during the holder's stay and expressly includes both ordinary and non-ordinary residence.
Greece also has a conversion procedure for holders of valid U.S. licences who have ordinary residence in Greece. The current registry describes conversion to the corresponding Greek category without theoretical or practical driving tests, subject to the required application documents. An official translation of the U.S. licence is required for that conversion process.
The U.S. Department of State's Greece page, dated 19 February 2026, says a Greek licence is required after more than 185 days in Greece. That statement conflicts with the newer Greek National Registry wording updated on 21 September 2026 and with the current Greek code's U.S.-licence provision. This page follows the newer, directly responsible Greek sources while flagging the discrepancy for anyone planning long-term residence.
Rental-company rules are contractual and can be stricter than Greek licence law. The checked first-party policies do not all use the same documentation rule.

Article 103 of Greek Road Traffic Code Law 5209/2025 requires the driver to carry the lawful driving licence and vehicle registration, and generally lists proof of insurance and road-tax payment. For cars rented from rental or leasing companies, a copy of the registration may be carried and the driver is not required to carry the insurance proof or road-tax receipt.
The U.S. Department of State says some insurers may require both a valid U.S. licence and an IDP for coverage in Greece. That is a possible insurance-contract condition, not a rule that turns the IDP into a Greek legal driving requirement.
The specific U.S.-licence permission verified in Greek law covers mopeds, motorcycles, motor tricycles, quadricycles and passenger cars. Commercial truck and bus treatment under an Arkansas CDL is unverified – confirm with official authority. A learner, restricted or category-limited Arkansas licence should not be treated as authorising more than its actual entitlement, and the Greek minimum age for the relevant category still applies.
No separate translation requirement appears in the U.S.-licence recognition route. Translation is instead expressly relevant to the separate procedure for converting a U.S. licence to a Greek licence.
For an ordinary passenger-car trip, carry the original valid Arkansas licence. An IDP is optional under the current Greek legal rule, but a 1949 Geneva Convention IDP can prevent problems where a rental company or insurer asks for one. Confirm the booking and insurance terms before travel.
If you are moving to Greece or staying long term, review the Greek conversion procedure and recheck the current official position because of the conflict between the Greek sources and the U.S. Department of State's 185-day statement.
