Guide to driving in Antigua and Barbuda with a Sri Lanka licence.
A valid Sri Lankan licence can be used as the home licence to obtain Antigua and Barbuda's temporary visitor driver's licence. Visitors should not rely on the Sri Lankan licence alone because the local temporary licence is the verified legal route and may be granted for up to three months. The current Royal Police process lists the original valid home licence, fee and local address, not an IDP. An IDP does not replace the local permit.
The practical sequence is simple: carry the original Sri Lanka licence, obtain the Antigua and Barbuda temporary visitor driver's licence, and comply with the vehicle class and any conditions printed on that local licence. The checked official visitor process does not make an IDP a requirement.
Sri Lanka and Antigua and Barbuda are separate licensing jurisdictions. Under section 30 of the Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, a person may not drive on a road unless holding a driver's licence. Section 40 allows the licensing authority to grant a bona fide visitor a temporary driver's licence, other than a chauffeur's licence, for a period not exceeding three months.
The Royal Police visitor instructions state that an applicant for the temporary licence must present the original valid driver's licence, pay the stated fee and provide a local address. The Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority likewise tells visitors renting cars that they need a valid home-country licence and must purchase a temporary local driver's licence. For a Sri Lanka licence holder, the foreign licence therefore functions as the supporting home licence for the local visitor permit rather than as the verified standalone permission to drive.
The checked Antigua and Barbuda law, police instructions and tourism guidance do not list an International Driving Permit (IDP) as a requirement for the temporary visitor licence. No IDP convention model therefore applies to that local permit requirement, and carrying an IDP does not remove the need to obtain the Antigua and Barbuda temporary licence.
The Automobile Association of Ceylon is a prescribed Sri Lankan association involved in issuing IDPs, and its current guidance says an IDP holder should also carry the original Sri Lankan licence. That origin-side rule does not create an IDP requirement in Antigua and Barbuda.
Section 40 permits a visitor temporary driver's licence for a period not exceeding three months. Because the source uses months rather than a fixed number of days, no fixed day count should be inferred.
The statutory visitor route is expressly for a bona fide visitor. A Sri Lanka-specific resident exchange, conversion right or deadline was not verified, so resident treatment is unverified – confirm with official authority before relying on the visitor permit after a change of status.
Rental policy is separate from driving law. SunCars Rentals Antigua says the original driver's licence from the country of issue and a local driver's permit are mandatory, and its terms require the hirer to be over 25 and to have held a licence for at least two years. Its driver-permit guidance adds language and script rules under which an IDP may be recommended or required. Comfort Car Rentals also requires a valid licence, at least two years of driving history and the temporary local licence, with a minimum renter age of 25.

The Royal Police requires the original valid home licence when issuing the temporary visitor licence. Section 41 of the Vehicles and Road Traffic Act allows a police officer to require production of the driver's licence for examination.
No Sri Lanka-specific insurance condition was verified. SunCars publishes rental-fleet insurance provisions, including passenger and third-party personal-injury liability coverage and optional extra protection. Those are company contract terms rather than a rule that can be generalized to every rental or privately owned vehicle.
The temporary visitor driver's licence cannot be a chauffeur's licence. Antigua and Barbuda law has motor cycle, private and chauffeur licence classes, but the exact mapping of Sri Lanka licence categories to a visitor permit was not verified.
The Royal Police also notes that a person resident in an OECS member state may not need the temporary licence while visiting. Sri Lanka is outside that group, so this stated exception does not provide a basis for a Sri Lanka licence holder to drive without the local permit.
Travel with the original valid Sri Lanka licence and arrange the Antigua and Barbuda temporary visitor driver's licence before taking control of a vehicle. An IDP is not a substitute for that local licence. If renting, confirm the company's age, licence-tenure and language rules in writing before arrival, especially if any part of the licence may be difficult for staff to read.
