Guide to driving in Barbados with a Malaysia licence.
A valid Malaysian driving licence can be used in Barbados during a temporary visit for the vehicle class it authorises. Barbados abolished its separate Visitor Driving Permit on 15 October 2025, and a separate International Driving Permit (IDP) is not generally required by law. Malaysia Road Transport Department (JPJ) nevertheless advises overseas drivers to carry an IDP. Translation may matter for some rental companies. The published Barbados international-circulation Order provides a 12-month period for temporary visitors, subject to applicable conditions.
For a Malaysian visitor with a valid full car licence, the main requirement is to have the original national driving licence and satisfy the conditions for the vehicle being driven. The former Barbados visitor permit application is no longer necessary.
The distinction is between three documents. Your Malaysian licence establishes your driving entitlement. An optional Malaysian IDP provides an internationally recognised supporting document. The former Barbados Visitor Driving Permit was a separate local document and has been abolished.
Malaysia and Barbados are separate sovereign countries. Recognition of a Malaysian licence in Barbados follows the destination rules for foreign drivers, rather than a special bilateral arrangement.
Paragraph 4 of the Barbados Road Traffic (Motor Vehicles (International Circulation)) Order, 1960, allows a person making only a temporary stay to drive using a domestic driving permit issued outside Barbados. It limits the permission to vehicle classes or descriptions authorised by that permit. A Malaysian licence therefore does not automatically authorise a vehicle outside the categories printed on it.
Malaysia Ministry of Transport distinguishes the full Competent Driving Licence (CDL), the Probationary Driving Licence (PDL) and learner licences. A valid full licence is the clearest basis for visiting and hiring a car. The treatment of a particular Malaysian probationary licence under current Barbados visitor rules is unverified – confirm with official authority.
Legal requirement: The Barbados rules reviewed recognise valid foreign domestic driving licences, and the Barbados Revenue Authority policy published in October 2025 requires visitors to hold a valid licence without imposing a general additional IDP requirement. The abolition of the local Visitor Driving Permit must not be confused with the international IDP document.
Official recommendation: JPJ has advised Malaysians travelling overseas to carry a physical driving licence alongside an IDP because requirements differ between destinations. Its director-general gave this general advice in May 2025, as reported by Bernama. It is not a statement that Barbados legally requires an IDP.
Applicable model: The United Nations treaty record identifies Malaysia and Barbados as parties to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic. The Malaysian IDP is based on that convention. JPJ issues IDPs through its state and branch offices to eligible holders of a Competent Driving Licence, with a validity period of one year. An IDP does not replace the underlying national licence.
Translation: The current Barbados guidance reviewed does not specify a mandatory translation solely because a driving licence was issued in Malaysia. A general legal translation requirement for every possible Malaysian licence format is unverified – confirm with official authority. SIXT separately requires an international driving document if the licence is printed in a non-Roman alphabet. Check the actual text and script on your physical licence and the terms of the chosen rental company.
The published Barbados international-circulation Order refers to 12 months from the last entry for someone making only a temporary stay. This is not an unrestricted permission to remain in Barbados for 12 months, and driving permission ends sooner if the underlying licence expires or other conditions prevent lawful driving.
The October 2025 administrative change abolished visitor driving permits. Because the available consolidated Order contains older provisions linked to that former system, travellers planning an extended visit should confirm the current application of its 12-month provision with the Barbados Licensing Authority. A conditional 12-month rule should not be converted into an unconditional fixed number of days.
The Barbados Licensing Authority describes a process for transferring a non-national driving licence and lists proof of residency among its requirements. This does not establish that every Malaysian licence can be exchanged automatically. Malaysia-specific resident eligibility, any testing exemption and a compulsory exchange deadline are unverified – confirm with official authority before relying on the visitor rule after a change of residence.
The Barbados Revenue Authority requires rental operators to verify that the driving licences presented by visitors are valid and current. A foreign licence is therefore acceptable in principle, but a booking remains subject to the particular company terms.
| Rental company | Published requirements relevant to a Malaysian driver | Source checked |
|---|---|---|
| SIXT Barbados | Original licence held at least two years, age 25 or older for listed passenger-vehicle categories, and passport or identity document. An international driving document is required for a licence using a non-Roman alphabet. Digital-only licences, photocopies and learner licences are not accepted. | SIXT Barbados rental information |
| Chelsea Motors | Valid foreign licence presented in person, held for at least three years. Drivers must be over 21 and under 80. Additional conditions apply to younger and older drivers. | Chelsea Motors rental terms |
Neither set of published terms identifies a special Malaysian nationality restriction. Rental age, driving experience, documentation and insurance conditions remain contractual and may differ between operators.
Since 15 October 2025, a car rental levy of BBD 5 per day, up to BBD 35 per contract, has replaced the former visitor permit charge. This is a rental charge, not a fee for recognising a Malaysian licence.
Under section 74 of the Barbados Road Traffic Act, police can require a driver to produce a driving licence for examination. Section 42 also allows police to request identifying information and evidence of motor-vehicle insurance. The Act provides specific later-production procedures where documents are not immediately available.
A visitor should therefore have the original Malaysian licence readily available and know where the vehicle insurance evidence is kept. A passport is required by certain rental companies for identity verification, but the legislation reviewed does not establish a universal roadside requirement to carry a passport or an IDP.
Insurance is a separate issue from foreign-licence recognition. SIXT states that its contractual protection may be void where the vehicle is driven by an unauthorised person or someone lacking the required driving licence at the time of the event. Chelsea Motors publishes its own insurance and excess terms. Neither policy should be generalised to every rental agreement in Barbados.
The key historical exception is the change to the visitor permit system. Some Barbados government pages and older rental terms still describe applying for a local permit and paying the former permit fee. The Barbados Revenue Authority policy note of 17 October 2025 expressly confirms that this requirement ended on 15 October 2025. The later policy is the appropriate basis for the present visitor permit position.
A Malaysian CDL authorising a private car does not automatically establish permission to drive a motorcycle, commercial vehicle or other category. Rental acceptance is also narrower than legal recognition in some circumstances. For example, SIXT requires drivers aged 70 or above to provide a medical fitness note, while Chelsea Motors has a different upper age limit and additional conditions for older drivers.
The 12-month provision in the published Order applies to temporary stays. It should not be treated as proof of resident driving rights or a guarantee that a visitor may remain in Barbados for that length of time.
For a normal short visit, travel with your valid physical Malaysian licence and check that it covers the vehicle you intend to hire. You do not need to obtain the former Barbados Visitor Driving Permit.
Consider obtaining a JPJ-issued 1949 Geneva Convention IDP before leaving Malaysia, in line with JPJ overseas-driving advice. It can provide supporting documentation even though Barbados does not generally require it by law. Ask the rental operator to confirm acceptance of your particular licence, including its printed language, issue date and vehicle categories.
If your stay will be extended or your status will change to resident, contact the Barbados Licensing Authority before relying on continued visitor recognition. Keep rental insurance evidence available and ensure every person who will drive is authorised under the rental agreement.
The information on this page was checked against the listed legislation, government guidance, treaty records and published rental terms on 2026-10-24. The Barbados Visitor Driving Permit abolition took effect on 15 October 2025. Older official pages that still describe the previous permit system should not be treated as current instructions. The application of older visitor-period provisions to extended stays and Malaysia-specific resident exchange conditions should be reconfirmed with the Barbados Licensing Authority.
