Guide to driving in New Zealand with a Malawi licence.
A current and valid Malawi driving licence can be used in New Zealand under the rules for overseas licences. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not independently mandatory. If the licence is not in English, NZTA requires an accurate English translation or an IDP. As of 26 September 2026, an overseas car licence may be used for up to 18 months from the last entry, with that limit reducing to 12 months from 1 November 2026.
The Malawi licence follows New Zealand's normal overseas-licence rules. The licence must remain current and valid, the driver must not be disqualified or suspended in New Zealand, and the permitted vehicle must correspond to the authority granted by the overseas licence. Language and vehicle class affect the additional documents and time limit.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi states that a person may drive without a New Zealand licence while holding a current and valid overseas licence or driver permit, provided the other overseas-driver conditions are met. A full overseas car licence permits a car or light vehicle within the New Zealand class 1 limits stated by NZTA. Learner, restricted or provisional licences can be subject to lower limits or conditions.
New Zealand does not make an IDP independently compulsory for every overseas driver. If an overseas licence is not in English, NZTA requires an accurate English translation or an IDP, so an approved translation can satisfy the language requirement instead. Malawi's Road Traffic Regulations provide an IDP in the form prescribed by the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic for use in 1949 Convention countries. United Nations treaty records list both Malawi and New Zealand as parties to that Convention. No separate NZTA recommendation to obtain an IDP when the language requirement is already satisfied was verified.
As checked on 26 September 2026, an overseas car licence can currently be used for up to 18 months from the driver's last date of entry into New Zealand. NZTA states that this limit reduces to 12 months from 1 November 2026. Overseas motorcycle and truck licences may be used for up to 12 months. The NZTA rule is framed by time since last entry rather than a separate visitor-versus-resident period. Malawi is not on NZTA's exempt-country list, so a Malawi licence is treated as a non-exempt licence for conversion and the applicable tests are required.
Rental policy is separate from driving-licence law. Budget New Zealand states that its drivers must meet its age and licence-history conditions and hold a current valid licence for the relevant vehicle. Its published terms state that a licence not printed in English must be accompanied by a valid IDP. This is Budget's contractual requirement and should not be treated as a rule applying to every rental company.
NZTA requires the overseas licence to be current and valid. Where the licence is not in English, the driver must have an accurate English translation or an IDP and must also carry the current overseas licence. A pair-specific insurance condition for a Malawi licence holder was not verified, so insurance is unverified – confirm with official authority.
The principal exception is the different time limit by vehicle class. The car-licence limit is 18 months on the verification date but changes to 12 months on 1 November 2026, while motorcycle and truck licences already have a 12-month limit. A driver must also remain within the vehicle authority and conditions of the overseas licence.
Bring the physical current Malawi licence. If the licence is not in English, obtain either an acceptable English translation or a Malawi IDP before driving. A 1949 Convention IDP is the model provided by Malawi regulations for 1949 Convention countries. Confirm the documentation required by the selected rental company before collection because rental terms can exceed the legal minimum.
This information was checked against the official and first-party sources listed above on 26 September 2026. The car-licence time limit is already scheduled to change on 1 November 2026.
