Guide to driving in Antigua and Barbuda with a Ireland licence.
An Irish driving licence does not by itself authorise a visitor to drive in Antigua and Barbuda. A bona fide visitor must obtain a local temporary driving licence, which may be issued for up to three months. An International Driving Permit is not the local legal permit, but Ireland Department of Foreign Affairs advises Irish visitors who plan to drive to bring their full Irish and international driving licence.
The practical sequence is simple: bring the valid Irish licence, obtain the Antigua and Barbuda temporary driving licence before driving, and carry an official IDP as recommended by Irish travel guidance. The local permit, not the IDP, is the document created by Antigua and Barbuda law for bona fide visitors.
Section 30 of the Vehicles and Road Traffic Act Cap. 460 requires a person driving a motor vehicle on a road to hold a driving licence. Section 40 creates the visitor route by allowing a bona fide visitor to be granted a temporary driving licence other than a chauffeur licence. The Irish licence is therefore supporting evidence of driving entitlement, not a standalone local authorisation to drive.
The visitor licence is subject to any conditions stated on it. Section 31 identifies local motor cycle, private and chauffeur licence classes, while section 40 excludes the chauffeur class from the temporary visitor licence.
No checked Antigua and Barbuda legal source makes an IDP the visitor driving authority. Ireland Department of Foreign Affairs nevertheless advises travellers who plan to drive in Antigua and Barbuda to bring their full Irish and international driving licence, so the IDP should be treated as an official recommendation rather than a substitute for the local temporary licence.
The National Driver Licence Service currently issues a 1949 UN Convention IDP as the standard Irish model and a 1926 model only for Brazil, Iraq, Nigeria and Somalia. For an Irish traveller following the Department of Foreign Affairs recommendation for Antigua and Barbuda, the relevant Irish-issued model is therefore the 1949 IDP. The NDLS also states that an IDP is valid only with the national licence.
A separate legal translation requirement for an Irish licence was not established from the checked official sources. Confirm the position with the Antigua and Barbuda licensing authority before travel.
Section 40 permits a temporary visitor driving licence for any period not exceeding three months. Because the statute states the limit in months rather than a fixed number of days, the database visitor-day field is left NULL.
The section applies to a bona fide visitor. Once a person is resident, that visitor basis no longer fits the statutory wording. No Ireland-specific resident exchange right, conversion deadline or testing exemption was verified – confirm with official authority.
Rental policies are separate from the legal rule and differ by company. Two Antigua rental companies were checked.
| Company | Published requirement | Source checked |
|---|---|---|
| Yolie's Car Rentals | Valid unrestricted home-country licence held for at least two years, identity document and local Temporary Driving Permit. International driving licences are accepted only with the original national licence. | Company terms, checked 6 October 2026 |
| Sunny Rentals Ltd. | Recognised full and valid driving licence from the country of origin. | Company terms, checked 6 October 2026 |
These checked policies do not establish that every rental company requires an IDP. Confirm the chosen company rules before booking.
Section 41 requires a driver to produce the driving licence when required by a police officer. If it is produced in person within 48 hours at the police station specified by the officer, the driver is not charged under that section. For a visitor using the statutory route, the local temporary driving licence is the relevant local licence document.
Insurance treatment is company-specific in the material checked. Yolie's Car Rentals states that failure to obtain the local Temporary Driving Permit invalidates its insurance coverage and that its CDW or LDW is void if the driver lacks that permit. No checked source supports applying that contractual consequence to every insurer or rental company.
The temporary visitor licence cannot be a chauffeur licence, and it is available only to a bona fide visitor. The local licence may also contain conditions that control what the visitor may drive. No pair-specific exception allowing an Irish licence or an IDP to replace the local temporary licence was verified.
Carry the valid full Irish driving licence and arrange the local temporary driving licence before driving. Also carry an official IDP in line with Irish Department of Foreign Affairs advice. If applying in Ireland, the NDLS standard model for this trip is the 1949 UN Convention IDP. Check the rental company age, identity, payment and insurance requirements before collection.
