Guide to driving in New Zealand with a Ireland licence.
Ireland and New Zealand are separate countries, so an Irish driving licence is an overseas licence in New Zealand rather than a domestic licence. NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi says a current and valid overseas licence can be used in New Zealand if the driver has not been disqualified or suspended there and has not been issued a New Zealand licence since the last entry.
For an Irish licence, the key point is that the licence is in English. NZTA does not require an IDP or separate translation for an English-language licence. The driver should carry the current physical Irish licence while driving.
The table below summarises the verified Ireland to New Zealand position as checked on 20 September 2026.
| Item | Verified position |
|---|---|
| Licence recognition | Yes, if the Irish licence is current and valid and the driver meets NZTA conditions. |
| Vehicle categories | You may drive vehicles covered by the valid Irish licence. For an Irish category B licence, this covers the category B vehicles permitted by the Irish licence. |
| IDP legal status | Not legally required for a current Irish licence because it is in English. |
| IDP recommendation | No destination-specific official recommendation to obtain an IDP was verified. NZTA accepts an English overseas licence without one. |
| IDP model | If an IDP is obtained, the relevant Irish-issued model for this destination is the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP. |
| Translation | No separate English translation is required for an Irish licence issued in English. |
| Visitor period | Currently up to 18 months from the last entry for an overseas car licence. From 1 November 2026, NZTA says this will reduce to 12 months. |
| Rental requirements | Named policies checked by Budget and Enterprise do not require an IDP for an English-language Irish licence, subject to their other rental conditions. |
| Police documents | Carry the current valid Irish licence. NZTA also requires an English translation or acceptable IDP when an overseas licence is not in English. |
| Insurance | Irish DFA advises adequate and appropriate insurance. Enterprise states New Zealand's ACC scheme covers injury on a no-fault basis but not vehicle or property damage. |
| Key exception | The overseas licence time limit changes on 1 November 2026. A New Zealand licence also overrides the overseas licence once issued. |
NZTA lists Ireland among its exempt countries for overseas licence conversion. For driving before conversion, NZTA says a full overseas car licence allows the holder to drive the vehicles they are entitled to drive under that overseas licence, subject to New Zealand rules.
For an Irish category B licence, NDLS defines category B around vehicles with a maximum authorised mass of no more than 3,500 kg and up to eight passenger seats in addition to the driver, subject to the detailed Irish category rules. An Irish licence holder should not assume that a New Zealand licence category gives wider entitlement than the Irish licence actually held.
NZTA states that a full overseas car licence corresponds to New Zealand class 1 for the purposes of the vehicle types that can be driven, but the overseas licence holder remains limited by the entitlements and restrictions on the Irish licence.
NZTA states that an IDP can serve as an English translation when an overseas licence is not in English. Because an Irish driving licence is issued in English, an IDP is not legally required for the Ireland to New Zealand journey.
NDLS states that Irish IDPs are issued in 1949 and 1926 UN Convention versions and that the 1949 version is the common permit. The United Nations treaty record shows Ireland acceded to the 1949 Convention on Road Traffic and New Zealand is also a party to that convention. If an Irish driver chooses to carry an IDP for this trip, the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP is the relevant Irish-issued model.
The IDP does not replace the Irish licence. NZTA states that an overseas licence must still be current and valid, and an IDP cannot be used on its own to convert to a New Zealand licence.
As checked on 20 September 2026, NZTA states that a current and valid overseas car licence may currently be used for up to 18 months from the driver's last arrival in New Zealand. NZTA has announced that from 1 November 2026 the period will reduce to 12 months from the day the driver last arrived.
If the overseas licence period expires, the driver must stop driving on the overseas licence or obtain the appropriate New Zealand licence. Leaving New Zealand and returning starts a new period under the NZTA rule.
Ireland is an NZTA exempt country for licence conversion. For an exempt-country car licence, NZTA says no theory test is required and a practical test is required only if the overseas licence has been held for less than two years. The physical Irish licence is required for conversion and an IDP alone cannot be used.
Rental policy is separate from New Zealand licensing law. Budget New Zealand says all drivers must present a full and valid licence and that licences not printed in English must be accompanied by a valid IDP. An English-language Irish licence therefore meets that particular language requirement without an IDP.
Enterprise's New Zealand renter policy checked at Wellington Airport similarly requires a fully valid licence and says an IDP or NZTA-approved English translation is required where the licence is written in a different language and character system. Enterprise also requires a photo ID and says drivers must have held the licence for at least 12 months at that location.
| Company | Requirement | Source checked |
|---|---|---|
| Budget New Zealand | Full and valid licence. A licence not printed in English must be accompanied by a valid IDP. The IDP alone is not accepted. | Budget New Zealand reservation terms and rental requirements |
| Enterprise Rent-A-Car New Zealand | Fully valid licence, photo ID and other location requirements. An IDP or NZTA-approved English translation is required where the licence is in a different language and character system. | Enterprise Wellington International Airport renter requirements |
Both policies were checked as rental-company terms, not as statements of New Zealand law. Rental branches can also impose age, licence-holding, payment and vehicle-category conditions.
NZTA says drivers using an overseas licence must have a current and valid overseas licence with them. If the overseas licence is not in English, an accurate English translation or acceptable IDP must also be carried. For an Irish licence issued in English, the core document is the current licence itself.
Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs advises Irish travellers to bring their full Irish driver's licence and to have adequate and appropriate insurance. It also states that carrying the driver's licence while driving is compulsory under the guidance it provides.
For rental vehicles, Enterprise states that New Zealand's Accident Compensation Corporation scheme provides no-fault cover for people injured in road accidents but does not cover property or damage to other vehicles. Enterprise also states that its Collision Damage Waiver is an optional coverage that reduces the applicable vehicle-damage excess and is not insurance. The exact cover and exclusions depend on the rental agreement.

For an ordinary visitor driving a car in New Zealand, carry the current full Irish licence and keep it with you whenever you drive. Because the licence is in English, NZTA does not require an IDP or separate translation for the legal driving requirement.
An Irish driver who wants an IDP may obtain the 1949 Geneva Convention version through the Irish system, but it is not a substitute for the Irish licence and no destination-specific official requirement for it was verified. Before collecting a rental car, check the chosen company's current terms because rental conditions are separate from the licensing rules.
If the stay extends toward the overseas-licence time limit, check the current NZTA rule before continuing to drive. As of this verification date the car-licence period is 18 months, with a scheduled reduction to 12 months from 1 November 2026.
This Ireland to New Zealand destination guide was verified against the named official, treaty and rental-company sources on 20 September 2026. Rules can change, especially the overseas car-licence time limit scheduled for 1 November 2026, so the current NZTA requirements should be checked again before travel.
