Guide to driving in Antigua and Barbuda with a Hungary licence.
A valid Hungary driving licence can support a visitor application for the required local temporary driving licence in Antigua and Barbuda, but it does not authorize driving on its own. The local visitor licence may be granted for no more than three months. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not legally required and official travel guidance states that it is not recognized there.
Bring the original valid Hungary licence and obtain the local temporary driving licence or permit before driving. The visitor permit is the operative local driving authority. An IDP does not replace it.
Antigua and Barbuda and Hungary are separate national licensing jurisdictions. Section 40 of the Vehicles and Road Traffic Act allows a temporary driver licence, other than a chauffeur licence, to be granted to a bona fide visitor for a period not exceeding three months. The Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority tells visitors to bring a valid home-country licence and purchase a temporary local licence. For a Hungary licence holder, this means the national licence is evidence used to obtain the local visitor permit rather than a stand-alone authority to drive.
The amended licence classes distinguish motorcycles, private vehicles and chauffeur vehicles. The private class includes private motor cars and rental vehicles, while the visitor provision expressly excludes a chauffeur licence. The local temporary licence can also carry conditions set on the licence.
An IDP is not legally required for this trip. Government of Canada travel guidance states that the International Driving Permit is not recognized in Antigua and Barbuda, and the destination instead requires a temporary local licence. Hungary can issue both 1949 Geneva and 1968 Vienna convention IDPs, but Antigua and Barbuda is not listed as a contracting party to either convention. Neither convention model is therefore the document that authorizes a Hungary licence holder to drive there.
No government source checked recommends an IDP for this pair. A private rental company may still mention an IDP for translation convenience, which is a rental policy rather than a legal requirement.
The temporary visitor licence may be granted for a period not exceeding three months. Because the statute expresses the limit in months rather than a fixed number of days, no fixed day count is stated here. The provision applies to bona fide visitors. Hungary-specific resident exchange or conversion treatment is unverified – confirm with official authority.
Hertz at V C Bird International Airport requires a valid national driving licence and the local permit, and states that an International Driver Licence is not accepted for rental. SunCars requires the original licence from the country of issue and a mandatory local driver permit. SunCars also says an IDP is recommended, not required, as a translation aid for a non-English licence written in Latin letters. These are company terms, not destination law.
Section 41 of the Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, as amended in 1995, requires a person driving on a road to have the driving licence on the person or in the vehicle and to produce it when required by police. A visitor should therefore keep the local temporary licence available while driving. Keeping the original Hungary licence with it is practical because the home licence supports permit and rental issuance.
The road-traffic legislation also requires the vehicle to have insurance or security meeting the applicable third-party-risk requirements. SunCars says its rental vehicles are insured and offers optional Extra Protection that changes the renter excess under its contract. No verified source supports treating an IDP as an insurance-validity condition for a Hungary licence holder.
The visitor licence cannot be a chauffeur licence. It may be issued subject to conditions shown on the licence, so the permission actually granted controls the vehicle class and any restrictions. No authoritative local legal translation requirement for a Hungary licence was verified in the sources checked. SunCars separately recommends an IDP only as a translation aid in some non-English Latin-letter cases.
Travel with the original valid Hungary licence and arrange the temporary local permit before you drive. Do not rely on an IDP to establish legal driving authority. If you are renting, confirm the selected company terms in advance because Hertz does not accept an International Driver Licence for rental, while SunCars may recommend an IDP only as a translation aid in some cases.
