Guide to driving in Antigua and Barbuda with a Gabon licence.
A Gabon driving licence is not sufficient on its own to drive in Antigua and Barbuda. A bona fide visitor may be granted a local temporary driver's licence for a period not exceeding three months. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not the legal substitute for that local licence, and official Canadian travel advice says IDPs are not recognized in Antigua and Barbuda. No Gabon-specific translation rule was verified.

The destination law does not give a Gabon licence independent authority to drive. Section 30 of the Vehicles and Road Traffic Act requires the driver to hold a driver's licence. Section 40 creates a separate route for a bona fide visitor: the licensing authority may grant a temporary driver's licence, other than a chauffeur licence, for a period not exceeding three months and may attach conditions or require a driving test. No special exemption or bilateral rule naming Gabon was verified.
An IDP is not legally required for the verified visitor route and it is not a substitute for the local temporary licence. Government of Canada travel advice states that the International Driving Permit is not recognized in Antigua and Barbuda. The UN Treaty Collection lists neither Gabon nor Antigua and Barbuda as a party to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic or the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, so no convention-based Gabon IDP model was verified as applicable for this destination. No official destination recommendation to obtain an IDP was found.
For a bona fide visitor, section 40 allows a temporary driver's licence for any period not exceeding three months. Because the legal period is expressed in months and the licence may be issued for a shorter period, no fixed day count is used here. The visitor provision does not apply simply because someone holds a foreign licence. Once a person is no longer a bona fide visitor, the ordinary local licensing rules apply. No Gabon-specific resident exchange, conversion deadline or testing exemption was verified, so confirm the resident licensing route directly with the Transport Board.
Rental policy is separate from destination law. Fox Rent A Car's published Antigua airport terms require every renter to obtain an Antigua driver's permit. International renters must also present a passport and a valid driving licence from their country of residence. Fox says an international driving licence is required when the home licence uses a non-Latin alphabet. That company rule should not be treated as a legal IDP requirement, and no broad rental-industry policy specific to Gabon was verified.
Section 41 of the Vehicles and Road Traffic Act requires a driver to produce the driver's licence when required by a police officer. If it is not produced immediately, the Act allows the holder to produce it in person within 48 hours at the police station specified by the officer. Separately, section 3 of the Motor Vehicles Insurance (Third-Party Risks) Act requires compliant third-party insurance or security to be in force for use of a motor vehicle on a public road.
The temporary visitor licence cannot be a chauffeur licence. It may be granted with or without a driving test and may be subject to conditions printed on the licence. No verified source established how specific Gabon licence categories map to the local temporary licence, whether a translation of a particular Gabon licence is required, or whether Gabon residents receive any exchange privilege. Confirm those points directly with the Transport Board before relying on them.
Travel with your valid Gabon driving licence and passport, obtain the local temporary visitor driver's licence before driving, and do not rely on an IDP as a substitute. Ask the Transport Board or the rental company whether it needs a translation of your particular licence. If renting, check the company's documentation rules before booking and make sure you are an authorized driver under the vehicle's insurance.
