Guide to driving in Andorra with a Gabon licence.
A Gabon licence is not automatically confirmed as valid solely because it was issued in Gabon. Andorra accepts foreign national licences that meet specified Geneva 1949 or Vienna 1968 document models and also accepts qualifying International Driving Permits (IDPs) accompanied by the national licence. The current Gabon licence format and a Gabon-issued IDP model could not be conclusively verified, so the answer is conditional.
For a Gabon licence holder, the decisive issue is the document itself. Article 14 of Andorra's current driving-permit regulation recognises a non-EU or non-EFTA national licence if it conforms to Annex 9 of the 1949 Geneva Convention or Annex 6 of the 1968 Vienna Convention, or differs from those models only through supplementary headings. A qualifying international permit is another recognised form when carried with the national licence.
Gabon and Andorra are separate sovereign states. The United Nations treaty records checked do not list Gabon as a party to either the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic or the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. Andorra became a party to the 1968 Vienna Convention following its 2024 accession, effective in 2025. Andorran domestic regulation nevertheless defines recognised foreign permits by their conformity with specified convention models. Authoritative evidence establishing that the current Gabon national licence satisfies one of those models was not found, so unconditional recognition should not be assumed.
An IDP is not necessarily required where the national licence itself satisfies Article 14. Andorra separately recognises international permits issued in conformity with Annex 10 of the 1949 Geneva Convention or Annex 7 of the 1968 Vienna Convention when accompanied by the holder's national licence and used for the authorised categories. Which qualifying IDP, if any, is currently issued to a Gabon licence holder is unverified – confirm with official authority.
The current regulation does not impose the six-month residence limit on an ordinary visitor merely because the person entered Andorra. The six-month rule applies when the holder has obtained habitual residence or temporary residence in Andorra. A resident's foreign permit must also remain valid and unrestricted and the holder must satisfy Andorran age and experience requirements for the equivalent categories. The regulation provides a separate process for changing an eligible foreign permit to an Andorran permit.
No named rental-company policy was verified for the Gabon to Andorra combination. A rental company may impose documentary conditions separate from the legal rules governing whether a foreign permit is valid for driving. Confirm acceptance of the exact Gabon licence and any IDP with the company before collecting a vehicle.
Andorran rules require a driver to possess and carry the driving permit, necessary complementary authorisations and required vehicle documents. They must be valid and current and must be presented to competent authority agents when requested. No pair-specific insurance condition for a Gabon licence holder was verified.
No separate translation requirement for an ordinary visitor using an otherwise accepted foreign licence was established by the sources checked. Resident homologation is different. The current regulation can require certificates establishing authenticity and category equivalence, with sworn translations into Catalan, French or Spanish in specified cases. The Register of Driving Permits may also request further evidence concerning a foreign permit's authenticity, validity and authorised vehicles.
The sources checked on 2026-10-02 were the current Government of Andorra Legal Portal regulation on driving permits and complementary driving authorisations, the Government of Andorra material concerning its accession to the Vienna road-traffic conventions, the United Nations Treaty Collection records for the 1949 Geneva and 1968 Vienna Conventions on Road Traffic, and the Gabon Ministry of Transport information on national driving permits and licence categories.
Do not rely only on the country name printed on the licence. Confirm whether the physical Gabon licence meets one of the foreign-licence models recognised by Andorra. If it does not, confirm whether the competent Gabon authority can issue an IDP conforming to a model accepted by Andorra. An IDP used under Article 14 must accompany the original national licence. Rental-company requirements should be checked separately.
This information was checked against the listed government and United Nations sources on 2026-10-02. Driving-licence, residence and rental requirements can change, so document eligibility should be reconfirmed before travel.
