Guide to driving in Greece with a Crete licence.
A valid driving licence issued through the Greek licensing system in Crete can be used throughout Greece. Crete is a region of Greece, so this is domestic driving rather than foreign-licence recognition. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not legally required for this use, no IDP convention model applies, and no translation is needed. There is no foreign-visitor driving period merely because the licence was issued in Crete.
A Crete-issued Greek licence is not a foreign licence when used elsewhere in Greece. The key requirements are that the licence remains valid, covers the vehicle category being driven and complies with any restrictions recorded on it.
The Region of Crete is one of Greece's 13 regions. It does not operate as a separate country for driving-licence recognition. A Greek licence issued in Crete therefore remains a domestic Greek licence when its holder drives on Crete, mainland Greece or another part of Greek territory.
EU guidance lists the recognised licence categories as AM, A1, A2, A, B, BE, B1, C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D and DE. The holder may drive only vehicles covered by the valid categories and conditions recorded on the individual licence.
An IDP is not required to make a valid Greek licence usable within Greece. This pair does not involve international recognition, so neither a 1949 Geneva Convention IDP nor a 1968 Vienna Convention IDP needs to be selected for domestic Crete-to-Greece driving. An IDP is therefore also not an official practical necessity for this domestic use.
Foreign-visitor licence limits do not arise simply because a Greek licence was issued in Crete. Likewise, moving between Crete and another part of Greece does not create a change from foreign visitor to Greek resident for driving-licence recognition purposes. The licence remains subject to its normal validity and renewal rules.
Rental-company documentation is separate from driving law. SIXT's published Greece information says a renter needs a full valid driving licence together with a passport or identity card. SIXT's licence guidance states that valid EU/EEA licences are accepted without an IDP or translation. Its Greece terms also include age and licence-holding-period conditions, which should be checked for the chosen vehicle and location.
Gov.gr states that driving licences stored in Gov.gr Wallet are fully equivalent to their paper versions for legal use within Greek territory. This reinforces the domestic nature of the document. Specific insurance conditions tied to the fact that a Greek licence was issued in Crete are unverified – confirm with official authority. Vehicle insurance remains a separate obligation from IDP status.
The conclusion applies to a valid Greek driving licence. The holder must respect the vehicle categories, expiry dates and restrictions shown on the licence. Provisional or temporary documents should not automatically be treated as equivalent to a full licence where separate rules apply.
Carry or use your valid Greek driving licence when driving elsewhere in Greece. There is no reason to obtain an IDP solely because the licence was issued in Crete. If renting a vehicle, check the chosen company's current documentation, age, licence-duration and vehicle-category conditions before collection.
