Guide to driving in Barbados with a Crete licence.
A valid Greek driving licence issued in Crete is recognised in Barbados for the vehicle class it authorises. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not legally required under the Barbados rules reviewed, and the separate Visitor Driving Permit was abolished on 15 October 2025. No fixed visitor driving period was verified. Official advice for this exact pair and a general legal translation requirement remain unverified, while rental firms may set their own document conditions.
Crete is part of Greece, so a licence issued there is a Greek national driving licence, not a separate Cretan licence. For a visiting driver, the essential documents are a valid full Greek licence covering the intended vehicle and, if hiring, the identification and other documents required by the chosen supplier. A Barbados visitor driving permit is no longer needed.
Section 2 of the Barbados Road Traffic Act defines a driving licence to include an authorisation issued in another jurisdiction, excluding learner-only authorisations. Section 61 requires a valid licence for the class of motor vehicle driven. This covers a qualifying Greek licence issued in Crete without a bilateral Crete-Barbados arrangement. A Greek category B entitlement is relevant to an ordinary passenger car, while motorcycle and heavier-vehicle entitlements must be checked against the corresponding Barbados class.
The European Commission records the current Greek GR6 card model and its vehicle categories. The physical licence, its expiry date and any category restrictions matter more than the place in Greece where it was issued.
No Barbados-law requirement to carry an IDP alongside a valid qualifying Greek licence was identified. The Barbados Revenue Authority confirms that the separate visitor permit requirement ended on 15 October 2025. The permit abolished by Barbados was not an IDP issued in Greece.
Greece and Barbados are parties to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic. The relevant international permit model for this treaty relationship is the 1949 Geneva IDP, not an assumed 1968 Vienna permit. Greek Road Traffic Code Article 98(7) addresses obtaining an international permit where a Greek licence is not recognised abroad, and names national representatives of international motoring federations as issuers without identifying a particular office here.
No Barbados-government recommendation specifically directed at Greek licence holders was verified. The Government of Canada recommends carrying an IDP for non-English licences in Barbados, which is useful language-related guidance but not a Barbados legal requirement or Greece-specific ruling. Whether a separate translation is legally demanded for a Greek-language document is unverified – confirm with official authority.
The checked Barbados provisions do not establish a fixed maximum visitor-day count for use of a valid foreign licence. The former permit options for stays shorter or longer than two months must not be treated as a current driving time limit. Continued permission to stay, licence validity and the authorised vehicle class remain relevant.
A Greece-specific deadline or process for exchanging a foreign licence after taking up residence in Barbados was not verified. Someone moving rather than visiting should ask the Barbados Licensing Authority about resident licensing before relying on the visitor position.
Under the Barbados Revenue Authority policy note, rental operators must inspect a current valid driving licence at booking or vehicle collection. This is separate from each company’s own terms. Published conditions checked include:
| Company | Published requirement | Source checked |
|---|---|---|
| SIXT Barbados | Original valid licence held for two years, plus passport or ID. An IDP is required for a licence printed in a non-Roman alphabet. The listed minimum rental age is 25, and drivers aged 70 or over need a doctor’s note. | SIXT Barbados rental information |
| Barbados Auto Rentals | Accepts foreign licences and asks for a valid licence, ID or passport, and payment card. Its FAQ asks customers to confirm any IDP need before booking and lists a minimum rental age of 21. | Company FAQ |
A modern Greek licence can contain Greek writing alongside standard EU fields. Check the actual lettering on your card against the company’s policy rather than assuming all Greek-issued documents will be treated identically.
Under section 74 of the Barbados Road Traffic Act, a driver must carry a driving licence or government-issued identification card and produce it to a uniformed police officer or transport inspector on request. If only identification is shown, the law provides for later production of the licence. Carrying the original Greek licence is the simpler choice.
Section 37 requires third-party motor insurance or qualifying security for use of the vehicle. SIXT states that its rental protection includes third-party cover and that protection can be void where an unauthorised driver or a person without the required licence operates the car. That is SIXT contract wording, not an automatic rule for every insurer or rental company.
The abolition of the visitor permit is the main change relevant to a current visit. Some older Barbados Licensing Authority and government pages still state that visitors need that permit, but the Barbados Revenue Authority’s later October 2025 policy expressly ends the requirement. Do not pay an obsolete visitor-permit fee.
A provisional or learner-only Greek entitlement does not meet the Road Traffic Act definition used here. Age, vehicle category and rental-company rules may prevent a particular hire even where the national licence itself is recognised.
For a short visit, bring your original current Greek licence and verify that it authorises the vehicle you will use. You need not arrange the old Barbados Visitor Driving Permit. If hiring, send the rental operator a description of the Greek and Latin text on the card and ask in writing whether it requires a 1949 Geneva IDP or translation, particularly for an older licence. Check the named-driver and insurance conditions before collection.
