Guide to driving in Greece with a Belgium licence.
Yes. A valid Belgian driving licence issued under the EU system is recognised in Greece for the corresponding category, subject to Greek minimum-age rules. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not legally required, and Belgian FPS Mobility says the national licence is sufficient for travel within the European Economic Area. No legal translation is required for a standard valid Belgian EU licence. The sources checked do not set a separate fixed visitor-day maximum.
For an ordinary visitor using a valid Belgian EU licence, the legal position is straightforward: the national licence is enough. Keep the licence valid, use only the vehicle categories it authorises and meet Greek age requirements. Rental companies can impose separate booking conditions.
Belgium and Greece are separate EU Member States. Article 98 of Greek Law 5209/2025 recognises holders of a valid licence of the corresponding category issued by an EU Member State, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein, provided they have reached the minimum age Greece requires for that category. European Commission guidance likewise states that a licence issued in an EU country can be used anywhere in the EU.
The EU-harmonised categories recognised across Member States include AM, A1, A2, A, B, BE, B1, C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D and DE. Recognition of the licence does not remove separate requirements that may apply to professional or special driving.
An IDP is not legally required for this pair. Belgian FPS Mobility expressly states that a person travelling to an EEA Member State does not need an international permit because the national licence is sufficient. The same authority describes the Belgian IDP as the Vienna Convention model. UNECE identifies the relevant Convention on Road Traffic as the Vienna Convention of 8 November 1968. That model is therefore background information rather than a document a Belgian licence holder normally needs for Greece.
No separate legal translation is required for a standard valid Belgian EU licence. Greek Article 98 applies translation conditions to specified non-EU situations, while EU licences are recognised directly under the EU-licence provision.
The sources checked do not impose a separate fixed tourist-day limit on the use of a valid EU licence, so max_visitor_days is not expressed as a number. The practical limit is the continuing validity of the licence and compliance with the relevant category and age conditions.
If Greece becomes your normal residence, a valid EU licence does not usually need immediate exchange. European Commission guidance says exchange is generally optional after moving to another EU country, subject to specified exceptions. The Greek administrative registry provides an exchange procedure for EU licences in cases including expiry and certain old-format or penalty situations. If the licence expires while Greece is your normal residence, renewal is handled in the country of normal residence.
Rental policy is separate from the legal right to drive. The two Greek rental-company policies checked accept Belgian or EU licences without an IDP, but each adds its own conditions.
| Company | Published requirement checked |
|---|---|
| Hertz Greece | The driving licence must have been held for at least 12 months and be European for drivers from EU countries. |
| Enterprise Greece | Belgium is expressly listed among EU states whose national licences do not require an IDP. Drivers must present a full valid licence and identity card or passport and have held the full licence for at least one year. |
These company rules do not prove that every rental supplier follows the same policy. Confirm the exact terms for the branch, vehicle class and booking before collection.
Article 103 of Greek Law 5209/2025 lists the lawful driving licence, vehicle registration, proof of insurance and proof of road-tax payment among the documents a driver carries, together with category-specific documents where applicable. For rental or leasing vehicles, the law provides a special rule under which the vehicle carries a copy of the registration and need not carry the insurance proof or road-tax receipt.
European Commission guidance states that motor insurance issued in the home country covers third-party injury throughout the EU. Wider cover is policy-specific. A rental vehicle is also subject to the insurance and liability terms in the rental contract.
The Belgian licence must be valid and cover the vehicle category being driven, and the holder must meet the Greek minimum age for that category. European Commission guidance also warns that a provisional driving licence or temporary certificate is not automatically recognised for driving in another EU country. Special and professional vehicle use can require additional qualifications or certificates.
For a normal holiday or business trip, take the original valid Belgian licence and the identification, payment and booking documents required by the rental supplier. Do not obtain an IDP solely to satisfy Greek law for a standard Belgian EU licence. If a rental company asks for extra documentation in its current contract, that is a separate contractual condition and should be followed for that booking.
