Guide to driving in Greece with a Wisconsin licence.
A valid Wisconsin licence is a U.S.-issued licence, and Greece's current road code expressly recognises valid U.S. licences during the holder's stay for mopeds, motorcycles, motor tricycles, quadricycles and passenger cars. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not legally required under that U.S.-licence provision, and it contains no translation requirement. No fixed maximum visitor-driving period was verified.
For the vehicle types named in Greek law, the Wisconsin licence itself is the legal basis for driving during the holder's stay. The driver still needs the appropriate valid licence category and must meet the minimum age Greece requires for that category. An IDP can be carried as an additional document but is not required by the U.S.-licence provision.
Wisconsin is a U.S. state, so a Wisconsin driver licence falls within the Greek Road Traffic Code rule for licences issued by the United States. Law 5209/2025, Article 98(3)(η), covers valid licences for mopeds, motorcycles, motor tricycles, quadricycles and passenger cars during the holder's stay in Greece. This is express statutory recognition rather than an assumed bilateral arrangement.
Greek law does not require an IDP for a valid U.S.-issued licence used under Article 98(3)(η). U.S. State Department general overseas-driving guidance nevertheless recommends obtaining an IDP and carrying the U.S. licence. If a Wisconsin holder chooses to obtain one, U.S. government guidance identifies AAA and the American Automobile Touring Alliance as the two authorised U.S. issuers, and State Department guidance describes their permits as meeting the 1949 Convention standard.
The current Greek provision says the recognised U.S. licence may be used during the holder's stay in Greece and does not state a fixed number of visitor-driving days, so no numeric maximum is stored here. Residence is a separate issue. Greece's National Registry of Administrative Public Services provides a procedure to convert a valid U.S. licence to the corresponding Greek licence for a person who has acquired usual residence in Greece. A universal conversion deadline for this exact situation was not verified.
Rental policy is separate from driving law. Enterprise Greece states that renters with a U.S. national licence do not require an IDP. Its published Greece requirements also require a full valid driving licence and a valid identity card or passport, and say the driver must have held the full licence for at least one year. No claim is made here that every Greek rental company follows Enterprise's policy.
A valid licence of the appropriate category is legally necessary. Additional roadside-document requirements specific to this pair are unverified – confirm with official authority. Pair-specific insurance conditions are also unverified – confirm with official authority. Enterprise states in its own Greece rental terms that supplemental third-party liability protection is included and required by Greek law for its rentals, but that does not establish every insurance rule for privately owned or differently rented vehicles.
The express U.S.-licence rule is limited to the vehicle types it names. It should not be extended to heavy, commercial or professional vehicle classes without separate authority. The holder must also satisfy the minimum age applicable to the corresponding Greek licence category.
For the covered vehicle types, carry the valid Wisconsin licence. An IDP is not a Greek legal requirement under the current U.S.-licence provision, although U.S. State Department general guidance recommends obtaining one for overseas driving. Before renting, check the exact supplier's current terms because a rental contract can impose documentation conditions beyond the legal minimum.
