Guide to driving in Barbados with a West Virginia licence.
Yes. Barbados allows an eligible temporary visitor to drive on a valid West Virginia licence for the vehicle class shown on it. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not legally required, although the U.S. Department of State generally recommends obtaining one for overseas driving. No separate translation is indicated for the English-language licence. The older driving order describes a 12-month temporary-stay window, and the separate visitor permit was abolished in 2025.
For a standard rental car, a West Virginia Class E passenger-vehicle licence is the relevant home-state credential. The rental agency will inspect its validity and may impose its own age, licence-history and identification rules. The Barbados car rental levy is a rental charge, not a driving permit.
West Virginia is a U.S. state, not a separate treaty party. Barbados is an independent country. The Barbados Road Traffic (Motor Vehicles (International Circulation)) Order expressly accommodates a domestic driving permit issued outside Barbados for a temporary visitor. West Virginia DMV identifies Class E as the passenger-vehicle class and Class F as motorcycle-only. Recognition does not extend a licence to vehicles its holder is not authorised to drive.
The checked Barbados sources do not make an IDP compulsory in addition to a valid West Virginia licence. Both Barbados and the United States are parties to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic. If you obtain an IDP, the relevant U.S.-issued document is the 1949 Geneva Convention model, available from authorised issuers including the American Automobile Association (AAA). It supplements rather than replaces the West Virginia licence.
The U.S. Department of State recommends getting an IDP in its general overseas-driving guidance. That is an official U.S. recommendation, not a separate Barbados legal requirement. The checked Barbados rules do not demand a translation of an English-language West Virginia licence, though a rental operator may have additional documentation terms.
Paragraph 4 of the published international-circulation Order describes driving during a temporary stay for 12 months from the date of the visitor’s last entry, only while the home licence remains valid and the person is not disqualified. The Order still contains superseded visitor-permit registration wording, so confirm the current position with the Barbados Licensing Authority for a stay approaching that limit. A permitted driving period does not extend immigration permission.
The temporary-visitor provision does not establish a West Virginia licence exchange right after becoming resident. Resident licensing steps and conversion deadlines are unverified – confirm with official authority.
Barbados Revenue Authority guidance states that the rental operator must check the validity of the licence at booking or pickup. Stoutes Car Rental says a valid local or foreign licence is acceptable, provided the driver is over 21 and under 80 and has held a licence for at least two years. Stoutes asks for the licence on delivery and an identity card or passport at pickup. These are company terms, not general Barbados age rules.
Since 15 October 2025, rentals are subject to a Barbados car rental levy of BBD 5 per day, capped at BBD 35 per rental agreement. Confirm the chosen operator’s IDP, payment and insurance terms before booking. One company’s policy does not establish an industry-wide IDP requirement.
Under section 74 of the Road Traffic Act, a driver must possess and produce a driving licence or government-issued identification card when requested by a police officer or transport inspector in uniform. A driver who produces identification rather than the licence must present the licence at the designated police station within 24 hours. Carry the original West Virginia card to avoid that extra step.
Barbados law requires third-party risk insurance or qualifying security for a vehicle used on a public road. Stoutes states that its vehicles have comprehensive cover including third-party liability and theft, with a deductible and exclusions under the basic terms. The rental agreement, rather than the fact that your West Virginia licence is recognised, determines the cover purchased for the hired vehicle.
The older international-circulation Order requires temporary foreign drivers to be at least 18 and excludes disqualified drivers. A West Virginia Class E licence does not itself authorise riding a motorcycle or operating commercial vehicles. Stoutes applies its own stricter age limits.
Some older Barbados Licensing Authority, government and U.S. State Department pages still instruct visitors to obtain a separate visitor driving permit. The later Barbados Revenue Authority policy note expressly abolished that requirement from 15 October 2025. Do not confuse the discontinued Barbados visitor permit with the optional U.S.-issued IDP.
Bring the original valid West Virginia licence and acceptable identification, and confirm the car-hire company’s age and licence-history rules before paying. An IDP is optional for driving law, though U.S. official guidance recommends one for travel abroad. If relocating or planning an extended stay, ask the Barbados Licensing Authority about your status and locally required licensing.
