Guide to driving in Greece with a Washington licence.
A valid Washington State driving licence is recognised in Greece for the U.S.-licence vehicle classes listed in Greek law, including passenger cars, if you hold the matching entitlement and meet the Greek minimum age. An International Driving Permit is not legally required, and the current U.S.-specific rule does not impose a separate translation. Rental or insurance contracts may still ask for an IDP, and U.S. guidance says a Greek licence is required after 185 days.
For a normal visitor renting and driving a passenger car, a valid Washington licence is enough under Greek law. The main practical qualification is contractual: some rental companies and insurers ask for an IDP even though Greece does not make it a legal condition for the U.S.-licence classes covered by Article 98(3)(η).
Washington and Greece are separate jurisdictions, and the licence is treated as a U.S.-issued foreign licence. Greek Road Traffic Code Law 5209/2025 Article 98(3)(η) expressly recognises valid licences issued by the United States during the stay for mopeds, motorcycles, motor tricycles, quadricycles and passenger cars. The driver must hold the corresponding entitlement and meet the minimum age required for the equivalent Greek category.
This recognition is not a Washington-specific bilateral arrangement. Washington falls within the Greek rule for licences issued by the United States. A Washington licence that authorises passenger-car driving can be used for an ordinary passenger car, while motorcycle use depends on the appropriate Washington motorcycle endorsement.
An IDP is not legally required for a valid Washington licence when driving one of the vehicle classes expressly covered by the U.S.-licence clause. The clause also contains no separate translation condition. No blanket Greece-specific government recommendation to carry an IDP was identified in the checked sources, although the U.S. State Department says an insurer may require one for coverage.
If a rental company or insurer asks for an IDP, AAA issues the U.S. International Driving Permit under the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic. The permit supplements the valid Washington licence and does not replace it.
The Greek statute describes recognition of the listed U.S. licences during the stay. Separately, current U.S. Department of State guidance for Greece says a Greek licence is required if the stay is longer than 185 days. Because the longer-stay position is tied to residence and conversion, this page does not store a universal fixed visitor-day maximum.
Greece provides a conversion procedure for valid U.S. licences after the holder acquires usual residence in Greece. The current National Registry procedure requires the foreign licence and an official translation among its supporting documents. Resident conversion therefore has a translation requirement even though driving under Article 98(3)(η) does not.
Rental policy is separate from Greek licence law and differs by company. The checked first-party terms show both approaches.
| Company | Published requirement checked | Source checked |
|---|---|---|
| Enterprise Greece | A U.S. licence does not require an IDP. Drivers must present a full valid licence and identity card or passport, and the licence must have been held for at least one year. | Enterprise Greece renter requirements checked 2026-09-28 |
| Sixt Greece | A licence issued outside the European Union must be accompanied by an International Driving Permit. Sixt also requires a valid licence and ID or passport. | Sixt Greece rental information checked 2026-09-28 |
Greek Road Traffic Code Article 103 requires the driver to carry the legal driving licence. It generally also lists vehicle registration, proof of insurance and proof of road-tax payment. A rented vehicle has a specific exception: it needs only a copy of the vehicle registration and is exempt from carrying proof of insurance and the road-tax receipt.
Insurance is a separate contractual issue. The U.S. State Department says an insurer may require both the valid U.S. licence and an IDP for coverage in Greece. That warning does not make the IDP a legal driving requirement.
The explicit U.S.-licence clause covers mopeds, motorcycles, motor tricycles, quadricycles and passenger cars. It does not expressly list trucks or buses, so a Washington commercial licence should not be assumed to authorise those vehicle classes in Greece without separate confirmation. Washington also requires specific motorcycle endorsements, and Greek minimum-age rules still apply.
For an ordinary passenger-car trip, take the physical valid Washington licence and the rental paperwork. Greek law does not require an IDP for the covered U.S.-licence classes. Obtain one before travel if the chosen rental company or insurer makes it a contract condition. For a stay beyond 185 days or after establishing usual residence, contact the competent Greek Regional Transport and Communications Directorate about conversion.
