Guide to driving in Greece with a Utah licence.
A valid Utah driving licence is legally accepted in Greece for the vehicle types covered by Greek law, including passenger cars, provided you hold the proper licence entitlement and meet the Greek minimum age for that category. Greece does not require a Utah licence holder to carry an IDP or official translation for this recognition. Rental and insurance policies can impose separate IDP conditions, and long stays trigger different licensing considerations.
For a normal visitor driving a passenger car, the original valid Utah Class D licence is the key legal document. The Greek rule expressly names licences issued by the United States, so the result does not depend on a separate Utah-Greece agreement. An IDP can still matter contractually when renting or for insurance.
| Question | Utah licence holder in Greece |
|---|---|
| Licence recognition | Yes. Greek Road Traffic Code Article 98 expressly covers valid driving licences issued by the United States for the listed vehicle types during the holder's stay. |
| Vehicle categories | Mopeds, motorcycles, motorized tricycles, quadricycles and passenger cars are listed, subject to the driver holding the appropriate entitlement and meeting the Greek minimum age for that category. A standard Utah Class D licence does not by itself include motorcycle entitlement. |
| IDP legal status | No. The United States licence provision does not make an International Driving Permit a condition of recognition. |
| IDP recommendation | Depends. AAA, an authorized United States IDP issuer, generally recommends an IDP for overseas travel, while rental and insurance terms can make it practically necessary even though Greek law does not require it for this licence. |
| IDP model | 1949 Geneva Convention IDP for a United States licence. |
| Translation | No for visitor recognition under the United States licence provision. An official translation is part of the separate Greek-licence conversion process for residents. |
| Visitor period | The Greek provision says during the holder's stay and gives no fixed day limit. Current United States travel guidance says a Greek licence is required for a stay of more than 185 days. |
| Rental requirements | They vary. Enterprise Greece and the Hertz Greece country guide accept a United States national licence without an IDP, while Avis Greece and SIXT Greece publish IDP requirements for non-EU licences. |
| Police or authority documents | The Road Traffic Code requires the lawful driving licence and vehicle registration document. For a rental vehicle, a copy of the registration document is sufficient and the driver is exempt from carrying proof of insurance and the road-tax receipt. |
| Insurance | Check the actual policy. United States travel guidance warns that insurers may require both the valid United States licence and an IDP for coverage in Greece. |
| Key exception | The United States exemption is limited to the listed light-vehicle categories and does not establish truck or bus privileges for a Utah commercial licence. |
Utah is a United States state and Greece is a separate sovereign country. Greek Road Traffic Code Article 98(3)(h) gives the relevant recognition rule: a holder of a valid driving licence issued by the United States may drive the listed vehicle types during the holder's stay in Greece. The legal basis is Greek domestic law naming the United States, not a bilateral Utah-Greece arrangement.
The listed types are mopeds, motorcycles, motorized tricycles, quadricycles and passenger cars. The same article requires the driver to have reached the Greek minimum age for the relevant category. The national licence must also provide the appropriate entitlement for the vehicle being driven.
Utah Driver License Division describes the ordinary Utah licence as Class D and states that it does not cover motorcycles. A motorcycle requires the relevant Utah motorcycle endorsement. For a typical rental passenger car, a valid Class D licence is the relevant Utah entitlement.
Greek Article 98(3)(h) does not make an International Driving Permit a condition for recognition of a valid United States licence, so an IDP is not legally required for the Utah licence route described above. It also does not impose a translation requirement for that route.
If an IDP is obtained because a rental company or insurer asks for one, the United States issues the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP. United States Department of State guidance identifies the 1949 Convention framework and the authorized United States IDP issuers. The permit supplements the Utah licence and is not a substitute for it.
The practical recommendation depends on the booking and insurance terms. The United States Department of State warns that insurers may require both a valid United States licence and an IDP for coverage in Greece, while the checked rental companies do not use a uniform rule.
The Greek United States-licence provision says the licence may be used during the holder's stay and does not state a fixed numerical day cap. Current United States Department of State guidance for Greece says a Greek licence is required if the stay exceeds 185 days. Because this long-stay issue interacts with residence rather than a simple fixed visitor limit in Article 98, max_visitor_days is not represented as a fixed number here.
Greece has a formal process to convert a valid United States licence to the corresponding Greek licence after acquisition of usual residence. The resident conversion procedure has separate documentation requirements, including an official translation of the foreign licence and verification from the issuing authority. Those conversion documents should not be confused with the requirements for a short-stay visitor driving under Article 98(3)(h).
Rental terms are contractual and can be stricter than the legal minimum for driving. The published policies checked for Greece are not uniform.

Check the terms attached to the exact booking because location, vehicle class and rate terms can change company documentation requirements.
Greek Road Traffic Code Article 103 requires the driver to carry the lawful driving licence and the vehicle registration document, along with other applicable vehicle documents. For a car rented from a rental or leasing company, a copy of the registration document is sufficient. The same provision exempts rental vehicles from carrying proof of insurance and the road-tax receipt in the vehicle.
The exemption from carrying proof of insurance is not an exemption from insurance itself. United States Department of State guidance says an insurer may require both the valid United States licence and an IDP for coverage in Greece. Check the actual policy terms rather than assuming that the Greek licence-recognition rule controls insurance coverage.
The United States licence exemption is expressly framed around mopeds, motorcycles, motorized tricycles, quadricycles and passenger cars. It should not be expanded to trucks, buses or other commercial categories without a separate legal basis. Use of a Utah commercial licence for trucks or buses under this exemption is unverified – confirm with official authority.
Category entitlement also matters. A Utah Class D licence should not be treated as authority to ride a motorcycle in Greece without the appropriate motorcycle entitlement. Resident conversion is another separate case and brings its own translation and verification requirements.
For a standard passenger-car visit, carry the original valid Utah Class D licence. An IDP and translation are not legal conditions of the Greek United States-licence exemption. If renting, review the chosen company's terms before travel because some checked firms accept the United States licence alone while others require an IDP. If an IDP is required by the renter or insurer, obtain the United States 1949 Geneva Convention model and carry it with the Utah licence.
For a stay approaching or exceeding 185 days, or after acquiring usual residence in Greece, use the Greek resident-licence conversion guidance rather than assuming the visitor rule continues unchanged.
