Guide to driving in Greece with a Nebraska licence.
Yes. A valid Nebraska licence is a U.S.-issued licence, and Greece recognises valid U.S. licences for mopeds, motorcycles, motorised tricycles, quadricycles and passenger cars during the holder's stay. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not legally required for those covered vehicles, and no translation is required for this exemption. U.S. CDC guidance nevertheless recommends carrying an IDP. No single fixed visitor-day maximum is used here because current official sources are not fully aligned.
For a standard Nebraska Class O car licence, the core legal answer is yes: it can be used for passenger-car driving under Greece's express U.S.-licence exemption. A Nebraska Class M licence is relevant to motorcycles and three-wheeled motor vehicles. Commercial heavy-goods and bus privileges are not established by the same exemption.
Article 98 of Greece's Road Traffic Code lists holders of valid licences issued by the United States among drivers permitted to drive the specified vehicle types during their stay in Greece. Those types are mopeds, motorcycles, motorised tricycles, quadricycles and passenger cars. Nebraska is a U.S. state licensing jurisdiction, so a valid Nebraska licence falls within that U.S.-issued category for the vehicle class it authorises.
The Nebraska DMV identifies Class O as the car licence and Class M as the motorcycle licence. Greece's U.S. rule should not be read as recognition of every commercial privilege on a Nebraska CDL because the statutory list is limited to the vehicle types above.
An IDP is not legally required by Greece for a valid Nebraska licence used within the U.S.-licence rule. The U.S.-specific clause also does not require an official translation. Separately, U.S. CDC travel guidance for Greece advises U.S. travellers to obtain and carry an IDP, and rental or insurance terms may require one even though Greek law does not.
If you obtain an IDP for a Nebraska licence, the relevant U.S. permit is the 1949 Geneva Convention model. The United Nations treaty record lists both Greece and the United States as parties to the 1949 Convention, and AAA explains that U.S. IDPs are issued under Article 24 of that Convention. An IDP supplements rather than replaces the Nebraska licence.
Article 98 allows the covered U.S.-issued licence during the holder's stay in Greece and does not give a fixed maximum number of days in that U.S.-specific clause. U.S. State Department Greece guidance separately says a Greek licence is required if a person stays more than 185 days. The Greek National Registry of Administrative Public Services provides a conversion procedure for a valid U.S. licence after acquisition of usual residence.
Those sources do not expressly reconcile the 185-day statement with the wording of Article 98, so this page does not store 185 as a fixed visitor maximum. A person moving to Greece should confirm the current resident position with the Greek transport authority and use the official conversion procedure where applicable. That procedure requires residence evidence, a valid foreign licence and a translation of the foreign licence, among its listed documents.
Rental contracts can be stricter than Greek driving law. Avis Greece's current FAQ says the renter must hold an EU-country licence or an International Driving Permit accompanied by the national licence, and the licence must have been held for at least one year. Hertz Greece's Athens terms require a valid national licence held for at least one year and make an IDP mandatory for licences issued in the rest of the world. The United States is not among Hertz's listed exceptions.
| Company | Published position checked | Source checked |
|---|---|---|
| Avis Greece | For a non-EU licence such as Nebraska, its FAQ requires an IDP accompanied by the national licence. Minimum licence-holding period one year | Avis Greece FAQ |
| Hertz Greece | U.S. licences fall in its rest-of-world category, for which an IDP is mandatory together with the national licence. Minimum licence-holding period one year | Hertz Athens location terms |
These are company policies, not statements of Greek law. Check the exact supplier and pick-up location before paying for a booking.
Greek Road Traffic Code Article 103 requires a driver to carry the lawful driving licence, vehicle registration, proof of insurance and proof of road-tax payment, plus any category-specific documents. For a vehicle rented from a car-rental or leasing company, the Code provides a carrying exception: the vehicle carries a copy of the registration, while the driver is not required to carry the insurance proof or road-tax receipt.
U.S. State Department guidance also tells travellers to carry photo identification and a copy of the passport biographic page. On insurance, it warns that insurers may require both the valid U.S. licence and an IDP for coverage. That is a coverage or contract issue, not proof that Greek law itself requires an IDP.
The express U.S. rule is limited to mopeds, motorcycles, motorised tricycles, quadricycles and passenger cars, and the foreign licence must be valid and appropriate to the vehicle. The sources checked do not establish recognition for Nebraska CDL privileges involving heavy goods vehicles or buses, so those categories should be confirmed with the Greek transport authority. A resident choosing to convert the U.S. licence must follow the separate Greek conversion procedure, including its residence, translation and supporting-document requirements.
For an ordinary rental car, take the original valid Nebraska Class O licence and check the rental company and insurer before departure. You do not need an IDP to satisfy the Greek U.S.-licence rule, but carrying the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP is a strong practical choice because U.S. CDC guidance recommends it and the Avis Greece and Hertz Greece policies checked require it for the relevant non-EU licence category. For a long stay or residence, confirm the current Greek conversion position rather than relying on a single day-count rule.
