Guide to driving in Greece with a Montana licence.
Yes. Greece's current Road Traffic Code expressly recognises valid U.S.-issued licences, so a valid Montana licence can be used during a stay for the vehicle categories covered by that licence and Greek law. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not legally required, and the U.S. clause does not require an official translation. Greek law gives no fixed day count in that clause, while rental companies and long-stay guidance can add separate requirements.
For ordinary passenger-car use, a valid Montana licence is enough under Greek law. The practical complication is car hire: Hertz Greece and Enterprise publish U.S.-licence acceptance without an IDP, while Avis Greece publishes a stricter IDP requirement for non-EU renters.
Article 98(3)(h) of Law 5209/2025 names licences issued by the United States. Montana is therefore covered as a U.S. issuing jurisdiction rather than through a Montana-specific bilateral agreement. The clause covers passenger cars, mopeds, motorcycles, motorized tricycles and quadricycles, subject to the holder having the corresponding entitlement and meeting the Greek minimum age.
Montana Motor Vehicle Division classifies Class D as the standard non-commercial licence and requires a motorcycle endorsement for motorcycles or motor scooters. Greece's U.S.-specific clause does not list trucks or buses, so it should not be read as recognition of a Montana CDL for commercial driving.
For the Article 98(3)(h) route, an IDP is not a legal condition and no general Greek-government recommendation to carry one was verified. An IDP can still matter contractually because some rental companies require it, and U.S. State Department guidance says an insurer may require both a valid U.S. licence and an IDP.
If you obtain one in the United States, the verified U.S. IDP is the 1949 Geneva Convention model. AAA states that the U.S. Department of State has designated it as an authorized IDP distributor and that an IDP supplements rather than replaces the state licence.
Current Greek Article 98(3)(h) authorises covered U.S.-licence holders to drive during their stay in Greece and does not state a fixed number of visitor days. U.S. State Department Greece guidance says a Greek licence is required after 185 days, while the current Greek conversion procedure is framed around acquisition of usual residence. Because the Greek statutory clause and U.S. travel guidance do not express the limit the same way, this page does not store a fixed visitor-day maximum.
For residents, Greece maintains a conversion procedure for valid U.S. licences. The current National Registry procedure requires evidence of usual residence and an official translation of the foreign licence for conversion. This conversion translation requirement is separate from the rules for a visitor simply driving on a valid Montana licence.
| Company | Published requirement checked | What it means for Montana |
|---|---|---|
| Hertz Greece | Its country table lists the USA among places whose national driving licence is accepted. | An IDP is not required by this published country-specific policy. |
| Enterprise Athens Airport | A full valid licence held at least one year plus ID or passport is required, and U.S.A. licences do not require an IDP. | A valid Montana licence can be used without an IDP under this location's published terms. |
| Avis Greece | Its FAQ says the driver must hold an EU licence or an IDP, with the IDP accompanied by the national licence. | Expect to bring both the Montana licence and an IDP. |
These are company policies, not Greek law, and they can change by location or tariff.
Article 103 of the Greek Road Traffic Code says a driver must carry the lawful driving licence and vehicle registration, and generally proof of insurance and road-tax payment. For a vehicle rented from a car-rental or leasing company, the vehicle carries a copy of its registration and the driver is not required to carry the proof of insurance or road-tax receipt.
That document exemption does not mean insurance is unnecessary. U.S. State Department guidance advises checking the actual policy because insurance companies may require both the U.S. licence and an IDP for coverage. Rental companies may also require a passport or identity document at pickup under their own terms.
For an ordinary trip in a passenger car, travel with the valid physical Montana licence and the documents supplied with the vehicle. Check the exact rental company before departure. If its terms or your insurer require an IDP, obtain the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP in the United States and carry it with the Montana licence. For a long stay or residence, confirm timing with the competent Greek Regional Transport and Communications office before relying on visitor treatment.
