Guide to driving in Antigua and Barbuda with a Illinois licence.
A valid Illinois licence can be used to obtain the temporary driver licence Antigua and Barbuda requires visitors to have before driving. The Royal Police Force asks for the original valid home licence, a local address and the visitor fee, not an International Driving Permit (IDP). The visitor permit may be granted for up to three months. No separate translation requirement was found for an English-language Illinois licence.
The decisive document is the Antigua and Barbuda temporary driver licence. An Illinois licence is the supporting home licence used to obtain it. The official visitor-permit process checked does not require an IDP, and the local permit can run for no more than three months.
Illinois and Antigua and Barbuda are separate jurisdictions, so this is foreign-licence use rather than domestic recognition. Section 40 of Antigua and Barbuda's Vehicles and Road Traffic Act allows a bona fide visitor to receive a temporary driver licence other than a chauffeur licence, with any conditions stated on that licence. The Royal Police Force currently requires the visitor to present the original valid driver licence from home.
The Illinois Secretary of State describes Class D as the ordinary non-motorcycle class for vehicles of 16,000 pounds GVWR or less, while Classes L and M cover motor-driven cycles and motorcycles. Antigua and Barbuda does not publish a verified one-to-one conversion of those Illinois classes for visitors, so the local temporary licence and its conditions determine what the visitor may drive.
An IDP is not listed as a legal requirement in the Royal Police Force visitor-permit requirements or in the current U.S. Department of State traffic-law guidance for Antigua and Barbuda. No destination-specific official recommendation for an IDP was found for an Illinois visitor using this permit process.
U.S. Department of State guidance says official U.S. IDPs are issued by AAA or AATA and meet the 1949 Geneva Convention standard. UNECE's current contracting-party material does not list Antigua and Barbuda as a party to either the 1949 Geneva or 1968 Vienna road-traffic convention, so no convention-model IDP is the legal basis for the Antigua visitor permit. An IDP therefore does not replace the local temporary driver licence.
The statutory temporary driver licence may be granted to a bona fide visitor for a period not exceeding three months. The U.S. Department of State's current Antigua and Barbuda guidance likewise describes the visitor permit as valid for three months. Because the source uses months rather than a fixed day count, this page does not convert that period into days.
Section 40 is expressly a visitor provision. An Illinois-specific resident exchange right, conversion deadline or test exemption is unverified – confirm with official authority. A person who becomes resident should not assume the visitor rule continues indefinitely.
Rental policy is separate from the law. Hertz at V.C. Bird International Airport says the driver must present a valid national driver licence and obtain the local permit, and it states that an international driver licence is not accepted for rental. SunCars Rentals Antigua likewise requires the original home licence and a mandatory local permit, while also imposing its own age and licence-history conditions.
| Company | Published requirement checked | Source checked |
|---|---|---|
| Hertz, V.C. Bird International Airport | Valid national driver licence plus local permit. International driver licence not accepted for rental. | Hertz location page |
| SunCars Rentals Antigua | Original home licence plus mandatory local permit. Company age and licence-history conditions also apply. | SunCars Terms of Hire |
Section 41 of the Vehicles and Road Traffic Act requires the driver licence to be produced when required by police. The Act provides a 48-hour route to produce it at a specified police station if it is not produced immediately. The original Illinois licence is also needed when applying for the temporary visitor licence.
No destination-wide official insurance condition tied specifically to an Illinois licence or an IDP was verified. U.S. Department of State guidance says U.S. auto insurance may not cover foreign driving and advises travelers to review rental coverage, which is practical guidance rather than an Antigua licensing rule.
The Royal Police Force says visitors who reside in an OECS member state may not be required to obtain a temporary licence. That is a residence-based exception, not an Illinois-licence exemption, so holding an Illinois licence alone does not remove the local permit requirement. The visitor licence also cannot be a chauffeur licence and may contain its own conditions.
Bring the physical original Illinois licence and obtain the local temporary driver licence before driving. Do not buy or rely on an IDP as a substitute for the Antigua and Barbuda permit. Confirm the permitted vehicle class, rental-company requirements and insurance terms before collection, especially for motorcycles or anything outside an ordinary private car.
This information was checked against the sources listed above on 2026-10-06. Licensing, rental and insurance requirements can change, so recheck the official visitor-permit and rental terms before travel.
