Guide to driving in Antigua and Barbuda with a Georgia licence.
A valid Georgia state driving licence can be used as the underlying home licence for obtaining Antigua and Barbuda's required temporary visitor driving permit, but the Georgia card alone is not enough to drive legally. The local temporary licence may be issued for up to three months. An IDP is not established as a legal prerequisite or substitute, and official sources conflict on whether Antigua and Barbuda recognizes one. No separate translation was identified for the English-language Georgia card.
Georgia and Antigua and Barbuda are separate jurisdictions. The relevant destination law is Antigua and Barbuda's Vehicles and Road Traffic Act. Section 30 requires a driver to hold a driving licence, while section 40 allows the licensing authority to grant a bona fide visitor a temporary driving licence for a period not exceeding three months. The U.S. State Department also states that visitors must purchase a temporary driving permit. This means a Georgia licence supports the application as the visitor's home licence, but does not itself replace the local visitor licence.
For categories, Antigua and Barbuda law distinguishes motorcycle, private and chauffeur licensing. The visitor temporary licence may be issued other than as a chauffeur's licence and may be subject to conditions. Georgia DDS identifies Class C as the regular non-commercial licence, so an ordinary Georgia Class C holder should expect the local permit to govern what may be driven in Antigua and Barbuda. Do not assume that commercial, motorcycle or special entitlements transfer beyond what the temporary licence authorizes.
No checked destination law or current U.S. State Department destination guidance makes an International Driving Permit (IDP) a prerequisite for a Georgia licence holder. The local temporary permit is the legally important visitor document. Official guidance on IDP use is inconsistent: U.S. CDC travel-health guidance recommends that U.S. travellers obtain an IDP, while Global Affairs Canada says an IDP is not recognized in Antigua and Barbuda. Neither source changes the destination rule requiring the temporary local permit.
For a U.S.-issued licence holder, AAA describes the U.S. IDP as a 1949 Geneva Convention format document. USA.gov identifies AAA and AATA as the two organizations authorized by the U.S. Department of State to issue IDPs. No IDP convention model was verified as a destination legal requirement, so do not rely on an IDP for legal authority to drive in Antigua and Barbuda.
The visitor temporary driving licence may be granted for no more than three months. The statute expresses this as months, so this page does not convert it into a fixed number of days. Antigua and Barbuda Immigration describes a bona fide visitor as a non-citizen who has not been issued a resident permit, which matters because section 40 is specifically a visitor provision.
Once a person has resident status, the visitor-only temporary licence route should not be assumed to continue. The ordinary local licensing provisions then become relevant. A Georgia-specific exchange right, testing exemption or conversion deadline was not verified, so resident conversion is unverified – confirm with official authority.
Rental policy is separate from the law. Yolie's Car Rentals, whose published 2026 terms were checked, requires drivers to be at least 25, hold a valid unrestricted home-country licence for at least two years, present passport or government-issued photo ID, and obtain the temporary local permit at pickup. Its FAQ says an international driving licence is not needed in most cases. This policy should not be generalized to every rental company.
Section 41 of the Vehicles and Road Traffic Act says a driver must produce the driving licence when required by a police officer. For a visitor driving under section 40, the temporary local licence is therefore the key local document. The sources checked did not establish a general rule that police also require the Georgia licence or an IDP at every roadside check.
Insurance evidence was company-specific. Yolie's states that basic third-party liability insurance is included in its rentals and that failure to obtain the temporary local permit invalidates coverage under its terms. That statement is contractual policy for Yolie's and is not presented here as a destination-wide insurance rule.
The section 40 visitor licence cannot be issued as a chauffeur's licence and may carry conditions set by the licensing authority. A Georgia motorcycle, commercial or other special-class entitlement should not be assumed to authorize the same class locally unless the Antigua and Barbuda temporary licence does so. Yolie's also excludes learner, provisional and restricted licences under its rental policy.
Bring the original valid Georgia driving licence and passport, obtain the temporary Antigua and Barbuda driving permit before driving, and carry the local permit while driving. For an ordinary Georgia Class C renter, that local permit matters more than an IDP. If you also obtain an IDP because of the conflicting published guidance, use an authorized U.S. issuer and carry it only as a supplement to the Georgia licence.
