Guide to driving in Antigua and Barbuda with a Sweden licence.
A valid Sweden driving licence lets a visitor apply for the temporary local driving licence needed before driving in Antigua and Barbuda. The Sweden licence alone does not authorize visitor driving. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not the local legal requirement, although the Swedish Transport Agency recommends carrying an IDP when driving outside the EEA as a translation aid. The visitor licence may be granted for up to three months.
Antigua and Barbuda and Sweden are separate sovereign states. Under section 30 of the Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, a person may not drive a motor vehicle on a road without a driving licence. Section 40 creates the visitor route by allowing a bona fide visitor to receive a temporary local driving licence for a period not exceeding three months. The Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda says the visitor must present the original valid home driving licence, pay EC$50 or US$20 and provide a local address. For a Sweden licence holder, this means the valid Swedish licence is the supporting document used to obtain the local visitor licence rather than a stand-alone authorization to drive.
The Act recognizes local motorcycle, private and chauffeur licence classes. The visitor temporary licence is expressly unavailable as a chauffeur licence and may contain conditions. No authoritative Sweden-to-Antigua category-by-category equivalence was found, so higher or specialist Swedish categories should not be assumed to transfer automatically.
An IDP is not the local licence that authorizes a Swedish visitor to drive. Government of Canada travel advice states that the International Driving Permit is not recognized in Antigua and Barbuda and directs travellers to obtain a temporary local licence. The United Nations treaty-status records do not list Antigua and Barbuda as a party to either the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic or the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, so no convention IDP model is established as the legal driving authorization for this destination.
Swedish guidance is a separate recommendation. The Swedish Transport Agency says drivers going to a country outside the EEA should have an international driving licence as a translation of the Swedish licence and must also carry the original Swedish licence. That recommendation does not replace the Antigua and Barbuda temporary local licence.
For a bona fide visitor, the local temporary driving licence may be issued for any period not exceeding three months. Because the statute expresses this as months rather than a fixed number of days, no fixed day value is stored in this record.
Section 40 is specifically a visitor provision. No Sweden-specific resident exchange, conversion deadline or testing exemption was verified. Resident conversion is therefore unverified – confirm with official authority.
Rental policy does not replace the legal requirement for the local temporary licence. Section 40 allows an authorized self-drive hire vehicle owner to hand over a visitor licence on behalf of the licensing authority.

|---|---|---|
| Raine's Car Rental | A local temporary permit is still required even when the renter has an international driving licence, and the company says its agent issues the permit during rental. | https://rainecarrental.com/faqs/ |
| Buzz Car Rental | A temporary licence is required and is described as valid for three months. | https://buzzcarrentalantigua.com/product/temp-license/ |
No sufficiently broad Sweden-specific rental IDP policy was verified across the market. Confirm the exact documents, age rules, deposit and insurance options with the company used for the booking.
Section 41 of the Vehicles and Road Traffic Act allows a police officer to require production of the driving licence for examination. The Motor Vehicles Insurance (Third-Party Risks) Act separately requires compliant third-party insurance or security for use of a motor vehicle on a public road, subject to statutory exceptions, and allows police to require production of the relevant insurance or security certificate under section 14.
As practical preparation, keep the local temporary licence and original Sweden licence accessible. If an IDP is carried under Swedish guidance, it must accompany the original Swedish licence.
The Royal Police Force of Antigua and Barbuda notes that visitors who reside in OECS member states may not be required to obtain the temporary licence. The OECS member list does not include Sweden, so this exception does not apply to a Sweden licence holder. The local visitor licence also cannot be a chauffeur licence, and any conditions printed on the issued licence must be followed.
Use the Sweden licence to obtain the Antigua and Barbuda temporary local driving licence before driving. Carry the original Swedish licence as well. Do not treat an IDP as a substitute for the local visitor licence. Carrying an IDP can still follow Swedish Transport Agency advice for travel outside the EEA, but confirm rental-company documentation and insurance terms before pickup.
