Guide to driving in Belgium with a Balearic Islands licence.
A valid driving licence issued in the Balearic Islands is a Spanish EU licence and is recognised in Belgium. You do not legally need an International Driving Permit (IDP), and Spain does not recommend one for EU travel. No licence translation is required. Visitors can drive while the licence remains valid, without a fixed licence-specific day limit. Belgian residency can trigger exchange requirements.
For an ordinary visit, a full Spanish EU licence is sufficient for the vehicle categories shown on it. No separate Balearic Islands licence or IDP application is involved.
The Balearic Islands are an autonomous community of Spain, and the Spanish Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) administers the Spanish driving-licence system. Belgium therefore applies its EU/EEA recognition rule, rather than its separate non-European licence rules. The EU recognises categories AM, A1, A2, A, B, BE, B1, C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D and DE, where the licence actually grants them. Belgian minimum driver ages still apply.
No IDP is legally required for this Spanish-issued EU licence. The DGT says Spanish licences can be used within the EU without additional authorisation, so it does not recommend obtaining an IDP for this trip. There is no applicable 1949 Geneva or 1968 Vienna IDP model to select. Belgium recognises the EU licence itself, without a separate certified translation.
Belgium does not impose a fixed 90-day or 185-day driving limit on visitors using a valid EU licence. If you take up residence, you can normally continue driving on the Spanish licence while valid. Belgium requires an exchange in certain cases, including within two years of registration for a licence with no administrative expiry date, after loss, theft or damage, and in the specified traffic-offence situation described by its transport authority. Exchange arrangements go through the Belgian municipality.
Published terms from three rental brands do not require an IDP for a qualifying Spanish EU licence. This is company policy rather than a separate legal right to rent a car.

Bring the original licence and meet the rental desk requirements for identification, payment, minimum age and the vehicle group reserved.
Belgian police guidance identifies the valid original driving licence for the relevant vehicle category, vehicle registration certificate and insurance certificate as documents for a roadside check. Keep these accessible rather than relying on a copy of the licence. EU compulsory third-party motor insurance from an EU-insured vehicle extends to Belgium, but optional cover for damage, theft or the driver is subject to the policy. If renting, check the insurance and protection stated in the agreement.
A learner or provisional licence, temporary replacement certificate or expired driving licence does not enjoy the normal recognition of a full valid EU licence. A category not shown on the licence is not authorised, and Belgian age limits can restrict a young driver. If your Spanish licence was issued in exchange for a non-EU licence, check with the Belgian authority before moving residence, because EU guidance identifies possible additional recognition conditions. The rule above does not apply to a non-Spanish licence merely held by a Balearic Islands resident.
Take your valid original Spanish licence and confirm that the authorised category matches the vehicle. You do not need to buy an IDP or obtain a licence translation for Belgium. Verify rental-specific identification, payment and age conditions if applicable. If settling in Belgium, contact your municipality early about exchange requirements.
This information was checked against the official and rental-company sources listed above on 2026-10-27. That is a verification date, not a date on which the rules changed.
