Araç Kiralama Notları

Enterprise Belgium requests a valid driving licence, passport and major credit card, with an IDP for non-EU licences, not Spanish EU licences. SIXT accepts valid EU/EEA licences without an IDP or translation but asks for the original licence and identity documentation. Europcar Belgium likewise states that EU licence holders do not need an IDP and requires an original licence held at least one year. Each company sets its own vehicle, age and payment conditions.

Polis ve Denetim

Belgian police guidance says drivers must present an original valid licence for the vehicle category and be able to show relevant registration and insurance documentation during a check. Carry the physical Spanish licence issued in the Balearic Islands. A Spanish mobile-only licence display should not be assumed to replace the original abroad. Police do not require an IDP merely because this valid licence was issued in Spain.

Sigorta Bilgileri

EU guidance says compulsory third-party liability insurance on an EU-registered and insured vehicle remains valid across EU countries, including Belgium. Additional cover for the driver, damage or theft depends on the contract. If driving a rental vehicle, check the rental agreement and included protection. Belgian police guidance also addresses presentation of an insurance certificate during roadside checks.

İstisnalar ve Özel Durumlar

The recognition rule covers full, valid EU licences and only the vehicle categories actually authorised. Provisional or temporary driving certificates are not automatically recognised across the EU. Belgian age requirements still apply. EU guidance flags possible additional checks when a Spanish EU licence was obtained by exchanging a non-EU licence and the holder later moves residence to Belgium. A foreign licence merely held by someone living in the Balearic Islands is not automatically a Spanish-issued EU licence.

Tavsiyemiz

Check that your DGT-issued Spanish licence is in date and shows the category you need. For a visit to Belgium, bring the original card, not an IDP or translation. If hiring a car, confirm the company and vehicle-group requirements and bring the required ID and payment card. If you move to Belgium, ask your municipality whether registration or exchange is necessary before your licence expires.

Driving in Belgium with a Balearic Islands Driving Licence: IDP Requirements and Rules

A valid driving licence issued in the Balearic Islands is a Spanish EU licence and is recognised in Belgium. You do not legally need an International Driving Permit (IDP), and Spain does not recommend one for EU travel. No licence translation is required. Visitors can drive while the licence remains valid, without a fixed licence-specific day limit. Belgian residency can trigger exchange requirements.

Quick answer

For an ordinary visit, a full Spanish EU licence is sufficient for the vehicle categories shown on it. No separate Balearic Islands licence or IDP application is involved.

How Belgium treats a licence issued in the Balearic Islands

The Balearic Islands are an autonomous community of Spain, and the Spanish Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) administers the Spanish driving-licence system. Belgium therefore applies its EU/EEA recognition rule, rather than its separate non-European licence rules. The EU recognises categories AM, A1, A2, A, B, BE, B1, C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D and DE, where the licence actually grants them. Belgian minimum driver ages still apply.

IDP requirement, recommendation and translation

No IDP is legally required for this Spanish-issued EU licence. The DGT says Spanish licences can be used within the EU without additional authorisation, so it does not recommend obtaining an IDP for this trip. There is no applicable 1949 Geneva or 1968 Vienna IDP model to select. Belgium recognises the EU licence itself, without a separate certified translation.

Visiting Belgium and moving there

Belgium does not impose a fixed 90-day or 185-day driving limit on visitors using a valid EU licence. If you take up residence, you can normally continue driving on the Spanish licence while valid. Belgium requires an exchange in certain cases, including within two years of registration for a licence with no administrative expiry date, after loss, theft or damage, and in the specified traffic-offence situation described by its transport authority. Exchange arrangements go through the Belgian municipality.

Hiring a car with your Spanish licence

Published terms from three rental brands do not require an IDP for a qualifying Spanish EU licence. This is company policy rather than a separate legal right to rent a car.

Bring the original licence and meet the rental desk requirements for identification, payment, minimum age and the vehicle group reserved.

Roadside documents and insurance

Belgian police guidance identifies the valid original driving licence for the relevant vehicle category, vehicle registration certificate and insurance certificate as documents for a roadside check. Keep these accessible rather than relying on a copy of the licence. EU compulsory third-party motor insurance from an EU-insured vehicle extends to Belgium, but optional cover for damage, theft or the driver is subject to the policy. If renting, check the insurance and protection stated in the agreement.

Exceptions that matter

A learner or provisional licence, temporary replacement certificate or expired driving licence does not enjoy the normal recognition of a full valid EU licence. A category not shown on the licence is not authorised, and Belgian age limits can restrict a young driver. If your Spanish licence was issued in exchange for a non-EU licence, check with the Belgian authority before moving residence, because EU guidance identifies possible additional recognition conditions. The rule above does not apply to a non-Spanish licence merely held by a Balearic Islands resident.

What to do before driving

Take your valid original Spanish licence and confirm that the authorised category matches the vehicle. You do not need to buy an IDP or obtain a licence translation for Belgium. Verify rental-specific identification, payment and age conditions if applicable. If settling in Belgium, contact your municipality early about exchange requirements.

This information was checked against the official and rental-company sources listed above on 2026-10-27. That is a verification date, not a date on which the rules changed.

Sıkça Sorulan Sorular

Yes, if it is a valid Spanish national driving licence issued through the DGT system. Belgium recognises EU licences for the categories they authorise, subject to applicable age and licence conditions.

No. A valid Spanish EU licence is recognised directly, and the DGT does not recommend an IDP for travel within the EU. Neither a 1949 nor a 1968 convention IDP is needed for this journey.

The Belgian EU-licence recognition rule does not set a fixed visitor-day limit. You can drive while your Spanish licence and relevant vehicle-category entitlement remain valid.

Not usually straight away. A valid EU licence may generally be kept, but Belgium requires exchange in defined circumstances, including a licence without an administrative expiry date within two years after Belgian registration.

Enterprise Belgium, SIXT and Europcar Belgium publish terms allowing a valid Spanish EU licence without an IDP. Bring the original licence and comply with the company requirements for identity, payment, driver age and licence-holding period.

Carry the original valid Spanish driving licence for the vehicle category. Belgian police also identify vehicle registration and insurance certificates among the documents to present during a roadside check.

EU guidance warns that recognition can become more complicated after moving residence to another EU country. If you plan to settle in Belgium, check your particular exchanged licence with the Belgian licensing authority or your municipality.
