Guide to driving in Greece with a South Korea licence.
Yes, for a short stay if you use the right documents. For six months or less, South Korean official guidance allows a Korean English-language driving licence without a separate IDP or translation, or a Korean driving licence accompanied by an International Driving Permit (IDP). The Korean IDP is the 1949 Geneva Convention model. Resident and long-stay drivers are subject to a different Greek licence-conversion process.
A Korean English-language driving licence is the simplest short-stay route because official Korean guidance for Greece accepts it without a separate IDP. If you are using a standard Korean-language licence, carry the national licence together with a 1949 Geneva IDP. Rental companies can impose stricter document rules than the legal driving rule.
Greece and the Republic of Korea are separate sovereign states. Greek Road Traffic Code Law 5209/2025 Article 98 allows a non-resident to drive with a valid national licence where recognition follows a road-traffic convention or agreement ratified by Greece. Greece and the Republic of Korea are both parties to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic. Korean official guidance specifically lists Greece for short-term use of the Korean English-language driving licence.
This is not the special direct-recognition list in Article 98 for the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and certain related territories. For a South Korean holder, the relevant basis is the convention framework together with the published Korean guidance for Greece.
The applicable permit for a South Korean licence holder is the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP. The Korean Road Traffic Authority identifies South Korea as a Geneva Convention country and lists Greece among countries where a Korean IDP can be used.
For a short stay, an IDP is not required when using the accepted Korean English-language driving licence. For a Korean-language licence, Korean official guidance for Greece pairs the national licence with an IDP. No separate translation is required for the accepted English-language licence route. Resident conversion is different and requires an official translation of the foreign licence.
The Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Greece describes short-term driving as six months or less and says those staying long term for six months or more after obtaining a residence permit should exchange the Korean licence for a Greek one. Greek law also frames convention-based foreign-licence recognition around the driver not having usual residence in Greece. Because the rule depends on residence status and is expressed in months rather than a fixed number of days, no fixed visitor-day maximum is stored for this page.
The current Greek National Registry conversion procedure covers valid licences from South Korea after acquisition of usual residence or qualifying student status. For South Korean licences, only categories corresponding to Greek A and B are convertible, and the registry states that the conversion is completed without theoretical or practical driving examinations.
Rental policy is not the same as driving law. Hertz Greece lists the Republic of Korea among countries whose card-type national licence is accepted. Enterprise Greece says South Korean national licences containing Latin characters are accepted and requires its standard identification documents. Avis Greece publishes a stricter rule for non-EU licence holders, requiring an IDP together with the national licence.
These company rules can change and do not establish the legal rule for every renter. Check the exact branch and booking terms before collection, especially if you plan to rely on the Korean English-language licence without an IDP.
Greek Road Traffic Code Article 103 requires the driver to carry the lawful driving licence and applicable vehicle documents. For rental and leasing vehicles, it says the vehicle need only carry a copy of the registration certificate and is exempt from carrying proof of insurance and the road-tax receipt. Korean Road Traffic Authority guidance for the Korean English-language licence also says the traveller should carry a passport. If you rely on an IDP, keep it with the original South Korean licence because the IDP is supplementary.
No South Korea-specific insurance condition was identified. Enterprise states that its Greece rentals include the liability protection required by Greek law. Optional cover, exclusions and claim conditions remain matters of the applicable rental or insurance contract.
Vehicle entitlement remains limited to the category shown on the valid licence or IDP. The South Korea-specific resident conversion route is narrower than general short-stay recognition because the Greek National Registry limits conversion to categories corresponding to Greek A and B. A rental company may also impose age, licence-holding-period or documentation conditions that are separate from the foreign-licence recognition rule.
For a short visit, use the Korean English-language driving licence and carry your passport. If you have a Korean-language licence instead, obtain a 1949 Geneva IDP and carry both documents. If you are renting, an IDP is still a useful practical safeguard because current published company policies differ. For residence or long stays, use the Greek conversion procedure and confirm that your category is eligible.
