Guide to driving in Greece with a Sicily licence.
A valid driving licence issued in Sicily is an Italian EU driving licence and is recognised in Greece under EU mutual-recognition rules. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not legally required for normal use of that valid EU licence, and no separate translation is required. No fixed visitor-day limit was identified because recognition is tied principally to the validity and status of the EU licence.
You can drive in Greece with a valid Italian licence issued in Sicily for the vehicle categories shown on it. The EU recognition rule, rather than a special Sicily-to-Greece agreement, is the relevant basis. An IDP is not necessary for this EU-to-EU licence use.
Sicily forms part of the Italian licensing system. The Sicilian regional transport administration publishes procedures for obtaining and administering Italian driving licences, while European Commission guidance confirms that valid driving licences used in the European Economic Area are mutually recognised. EU guidance specifically states that a licence issued in an EU country can be used elsewhere in the EU.
The recognised EU categories include AM, A1, A2, A, B, B1, BE, C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D and DE. The driver must still hold the appropriate category and comply with restrictions recorded on the licence and any applicable destination age requirement.
An IDP is not legally required alongside a valid Italian EU licence for ordinary driving in Greece. No official recommendation to obtain an IDP for this EU-to-EU situation was identified. Consequently, a 1949 Geneva or 1968 Vienna IDP model is not applicable to the normal recognition of this licence in Greece.
The fact that Italy and Greece participate in international road-traffic arrangements does not replace the more directly applicable EU mutual-recognition basis for an Italian EU licence.
No fixed maximum visitor period was identified for a valid Italian EU licence. A visitor can rely on EU recognition while the licence remains valid and applicable to the vehicle being driven. A provisional licence or temporary certificate should not be treated as equivalent to a full valid EU licence for cross-border driving.
Residence changes the administrative position. Greek official guidance provides for exchange of an EU Member State licence in circumstances including expiry and certain old-format licences. It states that an old-format licence issued before 19 January 2013 with an expiry extending beyond age 65 is subject to exchange where the holder has resided in Greece for more than two years. A licence that expires after the holder establishes normal residence in Greece must be dealt with under the Greek renewal rules.
No named rental-company policy was verified for this pair. The legal recognition of an Italian EU licence does not prevent a rental company from imposing separate contractual conditions concerning identification, driver age, how long the licence has been held, vehicle class or payment documentation. Check the selected company terms before booking or collection.
Carry the valid physical Italian driving licence. EU guidance warns that provisional licences and temporary certificates do not receive the same automatic cross-border treatment. A complete Greece-specific roadside document list was not verified, so other police-document requirements are unverified – confirm with official authority.
For insurance, official EU guidance states that a home-country motor policy provides compulsory third-party cover throughout the EU. A vehicle number plate normally serves as proof of liability insurance, but EU guidance recommends taking the insurance papers because they can make an accident or police check easier to resolve.
The licence must be valid, must cover the vehicle category being driven and must not be merely provisional. Different minimum-age rules can apply to particular vehicle categories in another EU country. Residents should also distinguish continuing licence recognition from Greek administrative requirements governing renewal, exchange and sanctions.
Take the original valid Italian EU driving licence issued in Sicily and check that its category covers the vehicle you intend to drive. You do not need to obtain an IDP or a separate translation solely to drive in Greece under the verified EU recognition rules. If renting, verify the rental company conditions independently because contractual requirements can be stricter than the legal licence rule.
