Guide to driving in Barbados with a Sicily licence.
Yes. A valid Italian driving licence issued in Sicily is recognised for temporary driving in Barbados within its authorised vehicle classes. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not legally required, and the separate Barbados visitor driving permit was abolished in October 2025. The published law allows temporary visitors to drive for up to 12 months after their last entry. An official requirement for translation of an Italian-language licence could not be confirmed.
Bring your original Italian licence. Barbados accepts a valid foreign national licence without an IDP, but the rental company must check it before handing over a car. There is no separate Sicily-specific exemption or permit arrangement.
Sicily is part of Italy, not a separate driving-licence country. Its provincial Motorizzazione Civile offices administer Italian licences. Paragraph 4 of the Barbados Road Traffic (Motor Vehicles (International Circulation)) Order recognises a valid domestic driving permit issued outside Barbados for a person making only a temporary stay. The permission covers the classes that the original licence authorises, rather than every vehicle category.
An IDP is not a legal prerequisite for this licence holder because the Barbados Order recognises a foreign domestic licence as an alternative to a convention permit. Where an Italian driver chooses to obtain an IDP, the documented convention model for Barbados is the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP. The Italian foreign ministry also identifies that model, although its guidance about a paid visitor permit is outdated. No current Barbados-government recommendation specifically urging Italian licence holders to obtain an IDP was verified.
Translation of an Italian-language licence: unverified – confirm with official authority. Ask the Barbados Licensing Authority whether any translation is needed for your particular document before relying on an English-language interpretation.
The published international-circulation rule permits a holder of a valid foreign licence to drive during the 12 months following the last arrival, provided the person is making only a temporary stay. It does not extend immigration permission or allow driving after the licence expires. The length of lawful admission may be shorter than this driving window.
Italian-licence exchange rights, resident licensing deadlines and the point at which Barbados treats a newcomer as resident: unverified – confirm with official authority. Do not assume the visitor provision continues after a move to Barbados.
These are company rules rather than additional Barbados-wide driving laws. Two published examples show why the original licence and driver eligibility matter more than purchasing an IDP.
| Company | Published condition | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Chelsea Motors | Original valid domestic or foreign licence at handover, held for at least three years. Drivers must be over 21 and under 80. Medical clearance is required for ages 75 to 79. | Rental terms |
| M.A.H Car Rentals | Valid home-country licence at delivery. It expressly says an international licence is not required. Drivers must be 25 to 80 with at least two years of driving experience. | Terms and conditions |
Check the chosen operator for its payment card, deposits, additional-driver rules and precise age limits. The abolished visitor permit should not be confused with the car-rental levy introduced in October 2025.
Section 74 of the Road Traffic Act authorises police to request the driving licence. Section 42 also provides for a request for driver and vehicle-owner details and evidence of insurance. Carry the original Italian licence and ensure the required insurance documentation is available. Neither provision establishes routine roadside requests for an IDP.
Section 37 requires third-party motor insurance or qualifying security. Chelsea Motors states that its rental price includes third-party liability and theft cover, while its collision-damage waiver has exclusions. An Italian licence does not establish the scope of a particular rental policy, so review the named drivers, excess and exclusions in the contract.
Under the published Order, a visiting driver must be at least 18, must not be disqualified and may only drive while the foreign licence remains valid. A rental company can impose a higher minimum age or additional experience requirements.
Some official and rental pages still refer to paying for a Barbados visitor driving permit. The Barbados Revenue Authority expressly announced its abolition from 15 October 2025, so that older instruction should not be followed without checking the newer rule.
For an ordinary short visit, use your valid Italian licence issued in Sicily and confirm acceptance with the rental operator before paying. An IDP is not legally necessary, though a 1949-model IDP may be useful if the operator wants easier interpretation of Italian text. Resolve any translation question directly with the Barbados Licensing Authority, and confirm that you are eligible for the selected vehicle and insured as a named driver.
