Guide to driving in Barbados with a Sardinia licence.
A valid Italian driving licence issued in Sardinia is recognised for the vehicle categories it authorises. For an ordinary visit to Barbados, a separate International Driving Permit (IDP) is not legally required, and no additional translation requirement was identified. Barbados abolished its own Visitor Driving Permit in October 2025. The precise current limit on the length of visitor driving remains unverified – confirm with official authority.
For an ordinary car hire, the national Italian licence establishes the driving entitlement. The hire company then checks its own eligibility and payment conditions. Barbados no longer adds a separate Visitor Driving Permit to that process.
Sardinia is a region of Italy, not a separate driver-licensing country. Its holders use Italian national licences. Barbados is a separate sovereign jurisdiction, and section 2 of its Road Traffic Act includes a valid licence issued by another jurisdiction in its definition of a driving licence. Section 61 links lawful driving to the vehicle class authorised by that licence.
For a standard Italian category B licence, this means ordinary cars within that category. A motorcycle, bus or goods vehicle requires the corresponding valid entitlement, subject to the Barbados class rules. A learner-only authorisation does not qualify. No Sardinia-specific exemption or bilateral agreement was identified.
The Barbados Revenue Authority says a visitor must present a valid driving licence and no longer needs the local Visitor Driving Permit. Neither that policy nor the Road Traffic Act establishes a separate compulsory IDP or sworn translation for this Italian-licence case. This legal assessment does not override an individual rental contract.
Italy and Barbados are parties to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic. If obtaining an IDP as an extra document, the relevant convention format to request in Italy is the 1949 Geneva model. The Automobile Club d'Italia identifies the provincial Motorizzazione Civile office as the issuing authority and advises checking the accepted model before travel. This is advice, not a Barbados legal mandate. An IDP accompanies rather than replaces the original Italian licence.
The published 1960 International Circulation Order describes temporary visitors driving on foreign permits for 12 months from their last entry. The same older text contains visitor-permit registration provisions that Barbados subsequently abolished, so the present application of its 12-month limit is unverified – confirm with official authority. That historical driving period should not be treated as an immigration or residency entitlement.
The Barbados Licensing Authority describes transfer of a non-national licence and an application process involving proof of residency. No verified Italian-specific conversion entitlement, resident grace period or deadline was found. A person settling in Barbados should ask the Licensing Authority which local licensing or exchange procedure applies before relying on the visitor position.
A national licence being valid for driving does not remove rental-company conditions. The Barbados Revenue Authority says rental operators must check licence validity. SunCars Rentals, previously Drive-A-Matic, requires the original licence issued in the home country, held for at least two years, plus a credit card even when the rental itself is paid in cash. Its published age range is over 25 to 80, with a medical certificate for drivers aged 75 to 80. Its checked terms do not list a mandatory IDP.
The car rental levy introduced on 15 October 2025 is BBD 5 per day, capped at BBD 35 per rental, and replaces the old local visitor-permit fee. The age, licence-holding and credit-card requirements described here are SunCars policies, not rules established for every rental operator.
Section 74 of the Road Traffic Act requires a driver to possess and produce a driving licence or a government-issued identification card when requested by police or a uniformed transport inspector. If the driver presents identification rather than a licence, the licence must subsequently be produced at the designated police station within 24 hours. Carrying the original Italian licence avoids that additional step.
Section 37 requires insurance or qualifying security against third-party risks covering the driver using the vehicle. SunCars states that its vehicles have insurance and offers separate optional protection products with contractual limits and excesses. Confirm that the hire agreement covers the named driver and review its damage terms. No automatic insurance cancellation solely for not carrying an optional IDP was established.
Some Barbados Licensing Authority and other government webpages still describe purchasing a Visitor Driving Permit. That conflicts with the Barbados Revenue Authority policy note dated 17 October 2025, which expressly abolishes the permit from 15 October 2025. The later, specific abolition notice is used for the current answer. That local permit was a separate document from an IDP issued in Italy.
The recognition described here does not extend to learner-only authorisations or vehicle classes absent from the Italian licence. Special vehicle uses, individual rental age restrictions and residence circumstances should not be inferred from the ordinary short-stay car-driving rule.
Take the original, valid Italian driving licence showing the category needed for your vehicle, and ask the rental operator to confirm that it accepts that licence without an IDP. An optional 1949 Geneva IDP may help with language or documentary questions, but is not established as a legal condition for an ordinary visit. For a long stay or a move, confirm current duration and exchange rules directly with the Barbados Licensing Authority.
