Guide to driving in Antigua and Barbuda with a New Zealand licence.
With a current New Zealand driving licence, you can drive in Antigua and Barbuda only after obtaining a local temporary visitor's driver's licence. Antigua and Barbuda law allows that visitor licence for up to three months. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not legally required for this route, and NZAA says Antigua does not accept IDPs. No separate translation is indicated for a standard New Zealand licence.
Your New Zealand licence is useful as the home-country licence needed to obtain the local visitor permit, but it is not the document that independently authorises you to drive in Antigua and Barbuda. Obtain the temporary local licence before driving. The statutory maximum is expressed as a period not exceeding three months.
Section 30 of Antigua and Barbuda's Vehicles and Road Traffic Act requires a person driving a motor vehicle on a road to hold a driver's licence. Section 40 provides the visitor route by allowing a temporary driver's licence to be granted to a bona fide visitor. Current Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority guidance says a visitor renting a car should bring a valid driver's licence from the home country and purchase the temporary local licence. For a New Zealand holder, this means the national licence supports the local permit application rather than replacing the permit.
An IDP is not the required document for a New Zealand visitor in Antigua and Barbuda. The New Zealand Automobile Association, which is the New Zealand IDP issuer, lists Antigua among destinations that do not accept IDPs and says a visitor's driving licence can instead be obtained after arrival using a current New Zealand driving licence. NZAA issues the 1949 Convention IDP, but there is therefore no accepted IDP convention model that substitutes for the Antigua and Barbuda visitor licence on this trip.
Section 40 allows a temporary visitor's driver's licence for a period not exceeding three months and only where the applicant is a bona fide visitor. The Act permits the licence to be issued with or without a driving test and subject to conditions placed on the licence. Rental policy is separate from the legal rule. Hertz at V C Bird International Airport says a renter must present a valid national driver's licence and obtain the local permit, which Hertz offers for USD 20 with three-month validity. Hertz also states that an International Driver's Licence is not accepted for rental. Yolie's Car Rentals requires a valid unrestricted foreign licence and the temporary local permit and also applies company-specific age and licence-history rules.
| Company | Requirement checked | Source checked |
|---|---|---|
| Hertz | Valid national licence plus local permit. International Driver's Licence not accepted for rental. | Hertz Saint Johns V C Bird International Airport page |
| Yolie's Car Rentals | Valid unrestricted foreign licence plus temporary local permit, with additional company eligibility rules. | Yolie's Car Rentals terms and conditions |
Section 41 of the Vehicles and Road Traffic Act says a driver must produce the driver's licence for examination when required by a police officer. In practice, carry the local temporary visitor's licence together with the original New Zealand licence used to obtain it. For insurance, Yolie's states that basic third-party liability is included in its rentals and that its insurance coverage is void if the driver does not hold a valid temporary local permit. That insurance condition is Yolie's contractual policy, not a general conclusion about every rental provider.
The section 40 visitor licence cannot be a chauffeur's licence and may carry conditions imposed when it is issued. The checked law does not establish an automatic one-to-one mapping between every New Zealand licence class and an Antigua and Barbuda temporary visitor category, so exact class equivalence is unverified – confirm with official authority.
Travel with the original current New Zealand licence and arrange the local temporary visitor's licence before driving away in a rental vehicle. Do not buy or carry an IDP on the assumption that it replaces the local permit because NZAA says Antigua does not accept IDPs. Check your selected rental supplier's current eligibility and insurance terms before arrival, particularly if you are using a licence other than a standard unrestricted licence.
