Guide to driving in Greece with a Italy licence.
A valid Italian driving licence is recognised in Greece because both countries are in the European Union and EU driving licences are mutually recognised. For an ordinary valid Italian licence, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is not legally required and no translation is required. No fixed visitor-day limit was verified for licence use, although the licence must stay valid and separate vehicle or residency rules may apply.
For most Italian visitors, the practical position is simple: use the valid Italian licence itself. The checked official guidance does not identify a separate IDP requirement or translation requirement for an Italian EU licence. Rental companies can impose their own minimum age, licence-holding period, payment and identity-document rules.
Article 2 of Directive 2006/126/EC requires mutual recognition of driving licences issued by EU Member States. That directive remains generally applicable until 26 November 2029 under the transition in Directive (EU) 2025/2205. European Commission guidance also states that an EU-issued licence can be used anywhere in the EU.
The harmonised categories recognised across the EU include AM, A1, A2, A, B, BE, B1, C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D and DE. Recognition does not expand the entitlement beyond the category actually held, and Greek minimum-age or vehicle-category rules still apply.
An IDP is not required for ordinary use of a valid Italian EU licence in Greece. The checked official Italian and EU guidance says the Italian national licence is sufficient for travel within the EU or EEA. Because no IDP is required for this pair, there is no applicable IDP convention model that the traveller must obtain.
No separate licence translation is required under the EU mutual-recognition system. This conclusion concerns a valid Italian EU licence, not a provisional document or a non-EU licence that may have different rules.
No fixed maximum number of visitor days was verified for driving on a valid Italian EU licence. The relevant condition is continued licence validity rather than a stated tourist-day cap. Separate rules can apply to an Italian-registered vehicle that is kept in Greece, so vehicle presence should not be confused with licence validity.
For residents, current EU guidance says an EU licence usually does not have to be exchanged merely because the holder moves to another EU country. The current Greek administrative registry describes exchange in specific situations including expiry, penalties and certain old-form licences after more than two years of residence. One Italian Embassy assistance page separately states a six-month conversion obligation, but that statement conflicts with the current EU guidance, the Embassy dedicated licence page and the Greek registry. A general six-month exchange deadline is therefore not treated here as verified.
Autohellas Hertz Greece accepts European licences for EU-country drivers and requires the licence to have been held for at least 12 months. Avis Greece also accepts an EU-issued driving licence, requires it to have been held for at least one year, and asks the renter to present identity documentation. These are rental-company terms rather than legal conditions for driving in Greece.
No IDP is needed under the verified Hertz and Avis terms for an Italian EU licence. Other rental companies may set different age, payment or vehicle-group conditions, so the booking terms should be checked for the exact supplier and vehicle.
Greek Road Traffic Code Law 5209/2025 Article 103 lists the legal driving licence among the documents a driver must carry and also lists the vehicle registration document, proof of insurance, road-tax evidence and any applicable category-specific documents. The same provision contains specific document exceptions for rental and leasing vehicles.
EU motor-insurance rules provide that compulsory third-party cover from one EU country remains valid across the EU. Optional or comprehensive insurance can have contract-specific territorial or time limits. For a rental car, the insurance and damage-waiver position comes from the rental agreement and applicable law.
Italian domestic category extensions should not be assumed to apply in Greece. The Italian Embassy in Athens specifically warns that motorcycles over 50 cc and up to 125 cc require a specific motorcycle entitlement in Greece rather than relying on an Italian domestic car-licence extension, while quads require category B. Travellers should match the vehicle to the harmonised category shown on their licence.
EU recognition also does not protect a licence that is expired, suspended, restricted or withdrawn. Provisional or temporary documents are not automatically recognised throughout the EU.
For a normal trip, carry the original valid Italian licence and use only the vehicle categories it validly covers in Greece. An IDP or translation is not needed solely because the licence is Italian. If renting, bring the identity and payment documents required by the supplier and verify the licence-holding and age conditions before pickup. If you become resident, confirm the current Greek renewal or exchange procedure for your specific licence.
