Guide to driving in Barbados with a France - Corsica licence.
A valid French driving licence issued in Corsica can be used by a temporary visitor in Barbados for the vehicle class it authorises. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not legally required under the published foreign-licence rule, and the separate Barbados Visitor Driving Permit was abolished in October 2025. No specific official IDP recommendation for French licences was confirmed. Translation rules and the current maximum visitor period need confirmation.
The key distinction is between your French national licence, which establishes driving entitlement, and the abolished Barbados visitor permit. The rental company may still apply its own document rules.
Corsica is a territorial collectivity of France, not a separate country that issues an independent national driving licence. A licence obtained there is a French national licence. Paragraph 4 of the published Barbados Road Traffic (Motor Vehicles (International Circulation)) Order provides for temporary visitors holding a foreign domestic driving permit and limits driving to vehicle classes authorised by that permit. It does not identify a separate Corsican exemption or restriction.
The Barbados Order allows a foreign domestic permit or a convention driving permit, rather than requiring both. The 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic includes France and Barbados, and the Order reproduces a 1949 convention IDP model. That identifies a relevant treaty model, not a document a Corsica-issued French licence holder must obtain for an ordinary visit.
France's Service Public explains that an IDP is a supporting international document and that country rules vary. No destination-specific official recommendation for this French licence was verified. If the original licence is chiefly in French, carrying an IDP may be practically helpful, but a binding Barbados translation requirement was not established.
The published 1960 Order authorises foreign domestic permit holders making a temporary stay to drive for 12 months from their last entry, subject to its stated conditions and licence validity. However, the same published text still includes the visitor registration and fee provisions abolished in October 2025. An authoritative, fully updated text confirming the present visitor limit was not located, so the post-reform maximum is unverified – confirm with official authority.
This temporary-visitor rule should not be treated as permission to drive indefinitely after becoming resident. Current resident conversion criteria or deadlines specifically applicable to a French licence were not verified.
Barbados Revenue Authority policy requires rental operators to check the current licence presented at booking or collection. Named operators impose additional terms, which are not rules for all drivers.

Since 15 October 2025 a car rental levy of BBD 5 per day, capped at BBD 35 per rental, applies instead of the old visitor permit charge.
Keep the original valid national licence available. The published international-circulation Order refers to police authority to require the production of a driving permit. A separate current roadside passport or IDP-document checklist was not verified.
SunCars says its fleet carries insurance including passenger and third-party personal-injury liability. Its optional Extra Protection changes the damage excess when contractual conditions are met. Check the policy and excess for your booking rather than assuming this insurer or rental contract represents all operators.
Older Barbados Licensing Authority and government webpages still describe buying a local Visitor Driving Permit. They conflict with the Barbados Revenue Authority policy note of 17 October 2025, which expressly abolishes that requirement from 15 October 2025. Treat the newer policy as controlling the visitor-permit question. Whether a certified French-to-English translation is required, and any special resident licence procedure, are unverified – confirm with official authority.
Bring the original licence from Corsica and confirm your endorsed vehicle class and the rental company's age and licence-holding rules. You need not apply for the discontinued local visitor permit. If your licence details are only in French, ask your rental provider whether it wants a translation or IDP. Confirm your position with the Barbados Licensing Authority for a lengthy stay or a change of residence.
These rules and published rental terms were checked against the sources above on 2026-10-26. Some older government and company pages remain inconsistent with the October 2025 visitor-permit reform.
