Guide to driving in Greece with a Egypt licence.
A non-resident holding a valid Egyptian driving licence can drive in Greece when the licence qualifies for recognition under the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic and covers the vehicle category. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not universally required if the domestic licence itself meets Annex 6, but a valid 1968 Vienna IDP with the national licence is a separate recognized route. Rental companies checked require an IDP. Greece uses residence status rather than a verified fixed visitor-day limit.
Egypt and Greece are both parties to the 1968 Vienna Convention, which entered into force for Egypt on 15 December 2024. For a visitor without usual residence in Greece, the decisive legal question is whether the Egyptian domestic licence conforms to Vienna Annex 6. If that is uncertain, carrying the Egyptian licence together with the Egyptian-issued 1968 Vienna IDP gives the clearer treaty route and also meets the rental policies checked.
Greek Road Traffic Code Law 5209/2025 Article 98 allows a person without usual residence in Greece to drive with a valid licence recognized under an international convention ratified by Greece. Vienna Article 41 requires contracting parties to recognize a valid domestic permit conforming to Annex 6 for the categories it covers. Greece may also apply its minimum age for the equivalent Greek category. The exact current Egyptian domestic-licence format was not independently verified against every Annex 6 requirement, so a national licence alone should not be treated as automatically sufficient in every case.
Under Vienna Article 41, a valid Annex 7 international permit is recognized when it is presented with the corresponding domestic driving permit. Egyptian Ministry of Interior rules state that the Automobile and Touring Club of Egypt issues the international driving licence specified by the 1968 Vienna Convention. No separate translation is required under the Annex 6 domestic-permit route or the Annex 7 IDP route. No Greece-government recommendation specific to Egyptian licence holders was verified. As practical advice, obtaining that IDP is sensible where Annex 6 conformity is uncertain and is particularly useful because the rental companies checked require it.
No fixed maximum number of visitor days was verified for this treaty route. Vienna Article 41 says recognition continues until the territory becomes the normal residence of the licence holder, and Greek Article 98 similarly conditions the relevant foreign-licence and IDP routes on not having usual residence in Greece. Once Greece becomes the normal residence of the holder, the visitor recognition basis no longer applies. An Egypt-specific resident exchange route was not verified in the official Greek procedures checked.
Rental policy is stricter than the minimum treaty position in the companies checked. Enterprise Greece requires a valid IDP with the national licence for countries outside its listed accepted groups, and Egypt is not on those lists. Sixt Greece states that licences from countries outside the European Union must be complemented by an international driving licence. Avis Greece states that a renter must hold an EU licence or an IDP, and that the IDP must be accompanied by the national licence.

Greek Road Traffic Code Article 103 requires the driver to carry the lawful driving licence and the applicable vehicle documents. When an IDP is used under Vienna 1968, it must be presented with the corresponding Egyptian licence. The sources checked did not establish an Egypt-specific rule making insurance automatically invalid if an IDP is absent. Insurance consequences must therefore be kept separate from both the legal recognition rule and individual rental-company document policies.
The licence and any IDP must be valid, the driver must meet the Greek minimum age for the equivalent category, and recognition extends only to corresponding vehicle categories. The Vienna and Greek-law visitor routes discussed here depend on the driver not having normal or usual residence in Greece. Special professional-driving requirements and special vehicle certificates are separate from ordinary private-car licence recognition.
Carry the valid Egyptian licence and, for the lowest practical risk, obtain the 1968 Vienna Convention IDP before the trip. This is especially important for car hire because every named rental company checked requires an international permit for this case. Keep the IDP with the national licence rather than treating it as a replacement. If moving to Greece, confirm the resident licensing route with the competent regional transport authority before continuing to drive.
