Guide to driving in Barbados with a Canary Islands licence.
Yes. A valid driving licence issued in the Canary Islands is a Spanish licence and can be used by a temporary visitor in Barbados for authorised vehicle classes. Barbados law recognises foreign domestic licences without separately requiring an International Driving Permit (IDP), while Spain’s DGT tells travellers outside the EU/EEA to obtain one. A separate Barbados Visitor Driving Permit is no longer required. The published visitor rule allows up to 12 months from last entry, subject to a temporary stay and licence validity.
A valid Spanish licence is sufficient under the Barbados temporary-visitor recognition rule without a separate IDP or visitor driving permit. The DGT still tells Spanish drivers to obtain an IDP for travel outside the EU/EEA, so the practical advice is to carry both.
The Canary Islands are an autonomous community of Spain, not a separate driving-licence jurisdiction. A licence issued there is treated as a Spanish national licence. Paragraph 4(1) of the Barbados international-circulation order expressly covers domestic permits issued outside Barbados, for the vehicle classes the permit holder may lawfully drive. A separate Barbados–Canary Islands agreement is unnecessary and none was established by the checked sources.
Under the Barbados order, a valid foreign domestic permit is an alternative to a convention permit, so an IDP is not a separate legal condition for a qualifying temporary visitor. Spanish DGT guidance takes a more cautious origin-country position: it instructs Spanish licence holders driving outside the EU/EEA to obtain an IDP. Both Spain and Barbados are parties to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic, which is the relevant model for the Spanish DGT IDP. An IDP supplements rather than replaces the national licence. A distinct mandatory certified-translation rule in Barbados is unverified – confirm with official authority.
The published order describes a period of up to 12 months after the visitor’s last entry, provided the stay is temporary and the underlying licence remains valid. This is not an automatic 365-day entitlement for a person who becomes resident. Barbados abolished the old visitor driving permit on 15 October 2025, despite older public pages still describing an application process. For residents, the Spanish licence exchange procedure and any conversion deadline are unverified – confirm with official authority.
A current foreign licence must be shown to the rental agency. Published conditions differ by operator, and rental eligibility is separate from legal driving eligibility. The Barbados Revenue Authority’s car-rental levy is BBD 5 per rental day, capped at BBD 35 per contract.
| Company | Published requirement | Source checked |
|---|---|---|
| Chelsea Motors | Valid foreign licence presented in person, drivers over 21 and under 80, licence held at least three years. | Company terms |
| Top Car Rentals | Valid licence at rental, no IDP specified as necessary, drivers aged 25–80 with two years of experience. | Company FAQs |
The Road Traffic Act permits police to require production of the driving licence under section 74, and identifying information and proof of motor insurance under section 42. Section 37 requires qualifying third-party cover for road use. Chelsea Motors publishes insurance, excess and driver-authorisation conditions for its rentals. Neither these statutory obligations nor one company’s contract proves that a separate IDP is compulsory in Barbados.
The foreign-licence provision covers only the vehicle categories printed on the Spanish licence. The published order requires visiting foreign-licence drivers to be at least 18 and not disqualified. The Canary Islands do not have a separate treaty or IDP issuing regime. Questions about a special vehicle category, an uncertified Spanish-language licence translation, or driving after acquiring residency should be checked before relying on visitor treatment.
For a short visit, rely on the valid original Spanish licence for the vehicle class authorised, but follow DGT guidance and obtain the Geneva-model IDP before leaving Spain. Check rental acceptance of a Spanish-language licence and insurer-authorised drivers directly. The old Barbados visitor permit application is not needed.
Checked against the sources listed above on 2026-10-26. The Barbados Revenue Authority’s 2025 permit-abolition notice supersedes older government and rental pages that still instruct visitors to purchase a driving permit.
