Canada ehliyeti ile Albania ülkesinde araç kullanma rehberi.
A valid Canadian driving licence can be used in Albania for the vehicle classes it covers while you have not been resident there for more than one year. Albanian law does not make an IDP the only route to recognition, but the Government of Canada tells travellers to carry one. For a Canadian licence, use the CAA-issued 1949 Geneva Convention IDP. Translation depends on whether the document format meets Albania's treaty-model rule.
You can drive as a visitor with a valid Canadian licence for the authorised vehicle class, subject to Albania's foreign-licence rules. Carry a Canadian 1949 IDP with the original licence. A separate Albanian translation is only relevant if the licence or IDP does not conform to a model recognised under Albania's international agreements. The verified time limit is tied to residence, not a fixed visitor-day count.
Article 133 of the Albanian Road Code permits drivers holding a foreign national driving licence or an international driving permit to drive vehicles for which that document is valid, provided they have not been resident in Albania for more than one year. The same article requires an official Albanian translation or equivalent document when the foreign licence or IDP does not conform to models established by international agreements to which Albania is a party.
Article 134 specifically includes Canada among the jurisdictions whose valid licences can be exchanged for an Albanian licence by a resident, subject to the applicable conversion procedure. The replacement licence cannot cover a higher category than the original.
The Albanian statute is conditional rather than an absolute IDP-only rule because it recognises either a qualifying foreign national licence or an IDP and provides a translation route for nonconforming documents. For that reason, the legal database value is best treated as depending on document conformity and translation. Separately, the Government of Canada Albania advisory states that Canadian travellers must carry an IDP, so the practical recommendation is clear.
Canada and Albania are both parties to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic. Canadian IDPs are issued through the Canadian Automobile Association and are the 1949 model, valid only alongside the original Canadian licence. The relevant Canadian permit is the 1949 model rather than a 1968 Vienna Convention permit.
No fixed visitor period in days was verified for a Canadian licence. The Albanian Road Code instead uses residence status, allowing use of the foreign licence or IDP while the holder has not been resident in Albania for more than one year. After more than one year from obtaining Albanian residence, the foreign licence is no longer valid for driving.
DPSHTRR currently allows holders of valid Canadian licences with an Albanian residence permit valid for more than one year to apply for conversion. For Canada, the file includes a verification certificate from the licence-issuing authority with apostille, notarisation and certified translation, along with the other listed conversion documents.
Rental policy is separate from road law. Enterprise Rent-A-Car Tirana states that each driver must present a valid driving licence held for at least three years. The primary renter must also present an ID card or passport and a major credit card in the renter's name. Its Tirana renter requirements checked for this page do not separately list an IDP, but that does not override the Government of Canada instruction to carry one.
Carry the original Canadian licence together with the Canadian IDP. CAA states that an IDP accompanies the national licence and does not replace it. No authoritative source checked established an additional Canada-specific roadside document list beyond the driving documents described here.
Albanian Law 32/2021 regulates compulsory motor third-party liability insurance. That is a vehicle-insurance obligation rather than a rule about recognition of the Canadian licence. Enterprise Tirana states that third-party liability protection is included in its rental rates.
The licence must remain valid and only authorises the vehicle classes covered by the Canadian licence or accompanying IDP. Article 133 also provides that drivers of special vehicle classes may need the professional-competence certificates required by the issuing state. The main residence exception is the one-year rule described above.
For a short visit, carry the original valid Canadian licence and obtain the CAA-issued 1949 Geneva Convention IDP before travel. This follows Government of Canada guidance and avoids relying on whether a particular provincial or territorial licence format satisfies Albania's treaty-model rule. If you become resident, arrange conversion before the one-year residence limit makes the foreign licence invalid for driving.
