Canada ehliyeti ile Greece ülkesinde araç kullanma rehberi.
Yes. A valid Canadian driving licence is expressly recognised in Greece for mopeds, motorcycles, motorised tricycles, quadricycles and passenger cars when it covers the corresponding category. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not legally required for this Canada-specific route. The 13 May 2026 Transport Ministry circular says an official Greek or English translation is needed only if the licence entries are not already in Greek or English. No fixed day limit is stated.
For the vehicle types covered by the Canada-specific rule, the Canadian national licence is the legal basis for driving. The main qualification is language: if the entries are not in Greek or English, the Ministry circular requires an official translation. An IDP is optional for the legal recognition route, but rental-company rules can be stricter.
| Issue | Current position |

| Canadian licence | Recognised for the listed vehicle types with the corresponding category |
| IDP | Not legally required under the Canada-specific national-licence rule |
| Translation | Required only if licence entries are not in Greek or English |
| Fixed visitor limit | No fixed day count stated in the Canada-specific rule |
Article 98 of Law 5209/2025 expressly names Canada. It excludes holders of a valid Canadian licence from the general prohibition on driving without a Greek licence, during their stay in Greece, for mopeds, motorcycles, motorised tricycles, quadricycles and passenger cars. The driver must hold the corresponding category. This is a specific rule in Greek law rather than an inference from a rental policy or a general treaty rule.
The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport circular D30/A3/76710 dated 13 May 2026 applies the same Canada-specific treatment and adds an important language clarification. It says an official translation into Greek or English is required only when the entries on the driving licence are not already in Greek or English.
An IDP is not legally required for a Canadian licence holder who relies on the Canada-specific national-licence rule. Greek law separately recognises a valid international driving permit for a holder who does not have usual residence in Greece, but that is an alternative route and the permit must be accompanied by the valid national licence.
No Greece-specific government recommendation telling Canadian licence holders to obtain an IDP was found in the official guidance checked. An IDP can still be useful where a rental supplier requires one. If a Canadian holder chooses to obtain one, CAA is an authorised Canadian issuer and CAA guidance places its IDP under the 1949 Geneva Convention framework.
The Canada-specific rule does not state a fixed maximum number of days. The 2026 Ministry circular expressly says that, for this group, stay includes both temporary and usual residence. That means the recognition wording is not limited to a short tourist period.
Separately, the Greek National Registry of Administrative Public Services provides a conversion procedure for a valid Canadian driving licence after the holder acquires usual residence in Greece. The registry describes conversion to the corresponding Greek category or categories. No fixed conversion deadline is stated here because the sources checked did not establish one for this Canada-specific route.
Rental policy can be stricter than Greek driving law. Enterprise Greece renter requirements checked for Nea Kifisia state that drivers with a national licence from Canada do not require an IDP. They must present a full valid licence held for at least one year and a valid identity card or passport.
Avis Greece publishes a different rule in its FAQ: at pickup it requires an EU-issued licence or an IDP, and says the IDP must be accompanied by the national licence. Avis also requires the licence to have been issued at least one year before the rental and requires an identity card or passport. A Canadian traveller should therefore check the exact supplier and booking terms rather than treating the legal IDP exemption as a guarantee of rental acceptance.
Article 103 of Law 5209/2025 says a driver must carry the lawful driving licence and vehicle registration, together with proof of insurance, evidence of road-tax payment and any other document required for the vehicle category. For a vehicle rented from a car-rental or leasing company, the same article permits a copy of the registration and specifically removes the obligation to carry the insurance proof and road-tax receipt.
Government of Canada travel advice for Greece states that Canadian drivers must have valid insurance coverage. The rental-vehicle exemption in Article 103 concerns carrying the proof, not whether the vehicle must be insured. Rental insurance and optional cover remain governed by the rental agreement.
The special Canadian-licence clause covers the listed vehicle types, not every possible commercial or heavy-vehicle category. The Canadian licence must show the corresponding entitlement. Because Canadian licence classes are issued by provinces and territories, category equivalence should be checked against the issuing jurisdiction and the Ministry annex where a class is unclear.
The language condition can also matter. A licence whose entries are in English needs no official translation under the 2026 circular. If the entries are not in Greek or English, the circular requires an official translation into Greek or English.
Carry the valid Canadian licence and confirm that it covers the vehicle you intend to drive. If the licence entries are not in Greek or English, arrange an official translation into one of those languages. An IDP is not legally required under the Canada-specific rule, but check the booked rental supplier because policies differ. If you become usually resident and want a Greek licence, use the official conversion procedure rather than assuming a deadline.
This Canada-to-Greece driving-licence information was checked against the sources listed above on 2026-09-27. Driving-licence law, administrative guidance and rental terms can change, so recheck the relevant authority and rental supplier before travel.
