Guide to driving in Armenia with a Kentucky licence.
A valid Kentucky driving licence can be used for temporary driving in Armenia under the applicable foreign-driver rules. The U.S. Department of State says visitors may drive with a foreign licence for up to three months after entry and must obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) before arrival. Armenian law provides a translation exception for qualifying Latin-character licences. Carry your original licence, IDP and passport.
The practical requirement is to travel with both your Kentucky licence and a genuine U.S.-issued IDP. The IDP supports the national licence rather than replacing it. Your passport establishes when the three-month visitor period began.
The three-month limit comes from U.S. Department of State guidance. It should not be converted into an exact number of days because calendar months vary in length.
Kentucky is a U.S. state, not a separate treaty-making country. Its driving licences are issued within the United States licensing system. Recognition in Armenia therefore depends on Armenian foreign-licence law and the treatment of U.S. driving credentials, not on a separate Kentucky-Armenia agreement.
Article 27 of Armenia's Law on Ensuring Road Traffic Safety addresses foreign national and international driving licences. It includes provisions for recognising foreign credentials and requires an international permit used by a non-Armenian citizen to be accompanied by the national driving licence.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet identifies Class D as the ordinary operator licence. Armenian legislation limits recognition to corresponding vehicle categories and applicable minimum ages. A Class D licence should not be treated as authorisation to drive motorcycles, heavy commercial vehicles or other categories for which separate qualifications are necessary.
The sources checked do not identify a special Armenian exemption or bilateral licence-recognition agreement specifically for Kentucky.
The U.S. Department of State expressly instructs travellers driving in Armenia to obtain an IDP before arrival. AAA also lists Armenia among destinations requiring an IDP for driving or car rental with a U.S. licence. For Kentucky visitors, obtaining one is the clear practical course.
The United States issues IDPs under the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic. Armenia is associated with the 1968 Vienna Convention framework and is not a party to the 1949 Convention. AAA nevertheless identifies Armenia as honouring the U.S.-issued IDP. This is an important distinction: the permit is the U.S. 1949 model, not an Armenian-issued 1968 model.
Armenian legislation also contains a separate provision concerning foreign national licences issued outside applicable international treaty relationships. That provision makes recognition conditional and includes a translation rule. Consequently, the U.S. Department of State instruction should be followed without assuming that Armenian legislation makes every possible instance of national-licence-only driving unlawful.
Article 27 provides for a notarised Armenian translation in the relevant foreign-licence recognition circumstances, but excludes licences whose entries are all written or duplicated in Latin characters. An ordinary Kentucky licence uses English and Latin characters, making this exception relevant. Check the actual credential, including any endorsements or restrictions, rather than assuming that every possible licence format qualifies.
An IDP provides multilingual licence information, but the existence of an IDP should not be confused with a blanket exemption from every separate translation requirement.
The U.S. Department of State allows foreign-licence driving for up to three months from the date of entry into Armenia. It specifically instructs travellers to present their passport as evidence of that date.
The same guidance says long-term drivers must apply for an Armenian driving licence. Armenian legislation contains provisions for exchanging certain foreign licences, including credentials meeting specified 1968 Vienna Convention standards. Those provisions do not establish that every Kentucky licence qualifies for examination-free exchange.
A Kentucky-specific conversion entitlement, exemption from testing or separate residency grace period was not verified. Anyone planning to live in Armenia or continue driving beyond the visitor period should confirm the applicable licensing process with the Armenian authority before the three months expire.
No named rental-company policy was verified for this licence and destination combination. Rental acceptance should therefore not be inferred from the general legal recognition rules.
Before paying for a reservation, ask the selected supplier to confirm acceptance of the original Kentucky licence and U.S.-issued IDP. Also check the minimum driver age, licence-holding period, payment requirements, vehicle category and insurance documentation. These are matters of individual rental policy unless separately established by law.
A rental company may impose conditions beyond those required for private driving. Its acceptance of a booking does not independently establish legal entitlement to drive.
Carry your physical Kentucky driving licence and IDP together. Armenian law expressly requires the national licence to accompany an international permit used by a non-Armenian citizen. Keep your passport available because the U.S. Department of State identifies it as evidence of the date on which the foreign-licence driving period began.
Specific insurance conditions for Kentucky licence holders are unverified – confirm with official authority. If using a rental vehicle, read the applicable insurance agreement and verify that you are listed as an authorised driver.
The U.S. Department of State warns that drivers involved in an accident must leave the vehicle in place until traffic police document the incident, and that moving it can affect liability and insurance coverage. This is general accident guidance, not a Kentucky-specific licensing condition.
Foreign driving credentials are recognised only within their corresponding authorised categories and subject to Armenian minimum-age requirements. The Kentucky Class D category does not automatically establish entitlement to drive every type of vehicle available for hire.
Article 27 of Armenian law restricts business and employment activities directly involving driving on foreign licences, with specified exceptions for international transport and certain Eurasian Economic Union nationals. These provisions matter if the intended activity is commercial driving rather than an ordinary private visit.
The position of Kentucky learner permits, intermediate credentials and individual commercial or motorcycle endorsements was not independently established. Holders of those credentials should obtain category-specific confirmation before driving.
Obtain your IDP from AAA before leaving the United States. Take the original Kentucky licence and passport, and ensure the licence remains valid throughout the intended driving period. The IDP is a supporting document, not a substitute for your state-issued credential.
For an ordinary visit, plan around the three-month foreign-licence period stated by the U.S. Department of State. Check any rental supplier's requirements before booking. If you intend to work as a driver or stay long-term, seek confirmation of the applicable Armenian licensing arrangements instead of relying on visitor guidance.
This information was checked against the listed government, legislative, international convention, Kentucky licensing and AAA sources on 2026-10-19. The date records the verification, not a change in Armenian law. Individual rental policies and unverified category-specific conditions require separate confirmation.
