Car Rental Juneau, Alaska Guide

Renting a car in Juneau offers a unique blend of convenience and freedom that is hard to match with other forms of transport. Unlike many state capitals, Juneau is not connected by road to the rest of North America, making its network of highways a self-contained gem. For international travelers, a rental car is the key to unlocking the region's dramatic scenery at your own pace, from the massive Juneau Icefield to the deep fjords of the Inside Passage. While the city has a public bus system and plenty of taxis and ride-shares, they primarily serve the downtown core and the Mendenhall Valley, leaving the truly spectacular outskirts—like the road to Echo Cove or the viewpoints along Glacier Highway—inaccessible or very expensive to reach.

Most visitors pick up their rental cars at Juneau International Airport (JNU), which is conveniently located just a few miles from downtown and the Mendenhall Valley. This is the most popular choice for its immediate access to the main highway. However, there are also a handful of rental offices in downtown Juneau, which can be a good option if you're arriving by ferry or staying in the city center and plan to explore for just a day or two. A key money-saving tip for Juneau is to book your car for the exact days you need, as daily rates can add up. Also, consider picking up your car in the afternoon and dropping it off in the morning to avoid paying for an extra day if your flight times allow. While airport locations often have surcharges and fees, the convenience of landing and driving straight to your accommodation often outweighs the small additional cost, especially when you factor in the price of a taxi to a downtown office to pick up a car later.

Pickup Location Advantages
Juneau International Airport (JNU) Most convenient for flyers; largest selection of vehicles; immediate access to Glacier Highway; quick exit to Mendenhall Valley and beyond.
Downtown Juneau Ideal for cruise ship passengers or those arriving by Alaska Marine Highway ferry; easy to combine with a walking tour of the historic district.

Car Rentals Requirements in Juneau, Alaska

Renting a car in Juneau follows standard U.S. protocols, but it's essential to have your paperwork in order to ensure a smooth pickup. The minimum age to rent a car in Alaska is typically 21, but drivers under 25 will almost always incur a significant "young renter fee." At the counter, you will need to present a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID, which for international travelers is your passport. You will also need a valid driver's license from your country of residence. A major credit card in the primary driver's name is mandatory; debit cards are often not accepted or come with stringent requirements and substantial deposits, so it's best to plan on using a credit card.

Insurance is a critical component of your rental. The rental company will offer a Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) or Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), which limits your financial responsibility if the car is damaged or stolen. It is highly recommended that you either purchase this coverage from the rental company or verify that your personal auto insurance or credit card offers equivalent coverage for rental vehicles in the U.S. Liability insurance, which covers damage you might cause to others, is also required and is typically included in the base rental rate, though you may be offered the option to increase the coverage limits.

Requirement Details
Minimum Age 21 years (with an additional fee for drivers under 25).
Driver's License Valid government-issued license from your country of residence.
International Driving Permit (IDP) Recommended if your license is not in English, though not strictly required by Alaska state law for short-term visitors.
Passport Required for identification for all international renters.
Payment Method A major credit card in the driver's name is strongly preferred and often required.

Why Rent a Car in Juneau, Alaska

Juneau's allure lies in its raw, untamed wilderness, and a rental car is your personal passport to adventure. While the compact downtown area is walkable, the true magic of the region unfolds as you drive. The freedom to pause at a pullout to watch a bald eagle soar, to linger at a viewpoint overlooking a glacier-carved valley, or to spontaneously decide to drive further up the road to see what's around the next bend is an experience no tour bus can replicate. It transforms your trip from a series of scheduled stops into a personal exploration of America's last frontier.

For families and small groups, the value proposition of a rental car becomes even clearer. The cost of individual tours to destinations like the Mendenhall Glacier or the Shrine of St. Therese can quickly surpass the daily rate for a vehicle. With a car, you create your own itinerary, traveling on your own schedule—perfect for keeping children engaged or allowing photography enthusiasts to chase the perfect light. It also provides a comfortable, private space to store extra layers of clothing, picnic supplies, and any souvenirs you pick up along the way, making the entire day more comfortable and flexible.

  • Unmatched Freedom: Explore beyond the downtown core and public transportation routes at your own pace.
  • Access to Scenic Drives: Experience the full length of Glacier Highway, with its stunning coastal and mountain views.
  • Visit Key Attractions Easily: Drive directly to the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center, Eagle Beach, and the trailheads for popular hikes.
  • Cost-Effective for Groups: Renting a car is often cheaper than buying multiple individual tickets for organized tours.
  • Flexibility with Weather: Alaska's weather is fickle; a car lets you chase the sun or wait out a rain shower in comfort.
  • Discover Hidden Gems: Stop at roadside viewpoints, local food trucks, and quiet picnic spots that tours pass by.

Best Car Rental Companies in Juneau, Alaska

Travelers to Juneau will find a solid selection of both globally recognized rental brands and a few local operators that offer a more personalized touch. The major international companies provide consistency, large fleets, and well-established loyalty programs. You'll find familiar names like Avis, Budget, Enterprise, and Hertz operating at the airport and in downtown locations. These companies are a reliable choice for renters who value a standardized experience and a wide range of vehicle choices, from economy cars to SUVs.

Choosing a rental company often comes down to balancing price, convenience, and the type of vehicle you need. It's often a smart strategy to book a vehicle through a comparison website to get an overview of available options and prices from all providers in Juneau. This allows you to easily spot which company is offering the best deal for your specific dates and vehicle category. However, it's always wise to check the final price with the rental company directly, including all taxes and fees, before completing your booking. Local Juneau agencies can sometimes offer competitive rates and more personalized service, but their fleets may be smaller, so early booking is essential.

Company Price Level Pros
Avis Medium / High Extensive fleet, great for upgrades, strong loyalty program, convenient airport location.
Budget Low / Medium Often competitive rates, good selection of economy and standard SUVs, reliable service.
Enterprise Medium Excellent customer service, known for well-maintained vehicles, neighborhood locations available.
Hertz Medium / High Wide variety of vehicles including premium models, fast and efficient airport counter, Gold Plus Rewards.

Popular Car Rental Categories & Prices in Juneau, Alaska

The type of vehicle you choose in Juneau can significantly impact your experience. The most popular choices among visitors are SUVs and crossovers, and for good reason. Their higher ground clearance is useful for reaching some trailheads, and their spacious interiors are perfect for accommodating outdoor gear, luggage, and the inevitable purchases from local shops. A compact or economy car, however, is a perfectly viable and budget-friendly option for couples or solo travelers who plan to stick to paved roads and appreciate better fuel economy. For larger groups or families, a minivan provides unparalleled space and comfort.

Vehicle prices in Juneau are highly seasonal, mirroring the ebb and flow of tourist traffic. During the peak summer months of June, July, and August, demand skyrockets, and prices can double or even triple compared to the shoulder seasons. This is when you'll find the highest rates and the most limited availability, making advance booking absolutely critical. The "shoulder seasons" of May and September offer a sweet spot, with pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and significantly lower rental car prices. Winter months see the lowest demand, offering bargain rates for those brave enough to explore Juneau's snowy landscapes.

Car Category Average Daily Price (USD)
Small Cars (e.g., Ford Fiesta) $65 - $100
Medium Cars (e.g., Toyota Corolla) $75 - $120
SUVs (e.g., Nissan Rogue, Jeep Wrangler) $100 - $200
Vans / Minivans $130 - $250
Luxury Vehicles $200 - $400+
Metric Details
Cheapest Month January or February
Most Expensive Month July
Average Price (Peak Season) $150 - $200 per day for an SUV
A Good Deal (Peak Season) Under $120 per day for a standard SUV
Cheapest Supplier (Often) Budget or a local independent agency
Cheapest Car Type Economy or Compact Car

Road Trips from Juneau, Alaska

Since Juneau is roadless from the rest of North America, your road trips will be out-and-back adventures along the stunning Glacier Highway (Alaska Route 7). Each drive offers a unique perspective on the region's coastal and glacial beauty. Here are a few classic Juneau road trips:

  • Mendenhall Glacier & Nugget Falls: A short 13-mile drive from downtown or the airport takes you to the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center. From there, it's a brief, scenic walk to the base of thunderous Nugget Falls. This is a must-do for any visitor and can easily be done in a half-day.
  • Eagle Beach & The Shrine of St. Therese: Continue north on Glacier Highway for about 27 miles from downtown. Your first stop is the Shrine of St. Therese, a serene stone chapel on an island reached by a causeway at low tide. Further along, Eagle Beach offers a sprawling coastline perfect for picnicking, beachcombing, and spotting eagles.
  • The End of the Road: Echo Cove: For the ultimate drive, head all the way to the end of the paved road, about 40 miles from downtown. This area, near Echo Cove, is a launching point for kayaking and offers incredible views of the Lynn Canal. Keep an eye out for bears, mountain goats, and whales from the shore. This makes for a full-day adventure.
  • Douglas Island Exploration: Cross the Juneau-Douglas Bridge to Douglas Island. A drive along North Douglas Highway reveals stunning views back towards the Juneau downtown skyline and the massive Gastineau Channel. You can also explore the quiet residential areas and access trailheads for hikes like the Mount Roberts Trail.

Driving Rules in Juneau, Alaska

Driving in Juneau is generally straightforward, but there are some key local and state rules to be aware of. As in the rest of the United States, you drive on the right-hand side of the road. The main highways are paved and well-maintained, but you should always be prepared for wildlife, especially in the early morning or evening hours. Moose and bears can appear suddenly, so adhering to posted speed limits is not just about safety, but about having enough time to react.

Alaska enforces strict laws against driving under the influence, with a blood alcohol content (BAC) limit of 0.08%. Seatbelts are mandatory for all occupants, and children must be secured in an approved car seat or booster seat appropriate for their age, height, and weight. During the winter months (typically October through March), rental cars in Juneau will almost always be equipped with studded tires or all-weather tires with good traction, as snow and ice are common. It's wise to ask your rental company about the specific tire policy for your rental period.

Road Type Speed Limit (mph)
Urban / Residential Areas 15 - 25 mph
Main City Streets (e.g., Egan Drive) 35 - 45 mph
Glacier Highway (rural sections) 50 - 55 mph

Toll Roads in Juneau, Alaska

Travelers will be pleased to know that there are no toll roads in Juneau or anywhere else in the state of Alaska. All highways, bridges, and roads are publicly maintained and free to use. This means you can explore the full extent of the road system without worrying about toll fees, passes, or electronic payment systems. The only potential cost related to road access is the fare for the Alaska Marine Highway System if you plan to bring your rental car on a ferry to another community, but this is not a toll road in the traditional sense.

Parking in Juneau, Alaska

Parking in Juneau is generally manageable, but it requires a bit of strategy, especially in the downtown core during the summer. The downtown area has a mix of free and paid parking. Many streets offer free parking for a limited time, usually 2 hours, so be sure to read the signs carefully. There are also several paid parking lots and garages, such as the one at the Marine Park, which offer all-day parking for a reasonable fee. During the peak of cruise ship season, downtown lots can fill up quickly by mid-morning, so arriving early is a good plan.

Outside of downtown, parking is much easier and almost always free. The Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center has a large, free parking lot, though it can get crowded during peak hours. At trailheads and popular viewpoints along Glacier Highway, you'll find designated pullouts and small parking areas. It's important to never block gates or park in undesignated areas, as this can harm the fragile environment and result in a ticket. Always ensure your vehicle is securely locked and valuables are out of sight, as with any travel destination.

Tips for Car Rental in Juneau, Alaska

A little planning goes a long way in ensuring a smooth and affordable car rental experience in Alaska's capital. Here are some insider tips to help you navigate the process:

  • Book Far in Advance: Juneau's rental car fleet is limited, and during the summer months, cars can be sold out weeks or even months ahead. Book as soon as your travel dates are confirmed.
  • Embrace the Shoulder Seasons: If your schedule is flexible, consider visiting in May or September. You'll enjoy lower prices on cars and accommodations, with fewer crowds at the attractions.
  • Choose Your Vehicle Wisely: While an SUV is popular, a smaller car is perfectly fine for paved roads and will save you significantly on fuel costs.
  • Understand the Fuel Policy: Most rental companies operate on a "full-to-full" policy. Pick up the car with a full tank and return it full to avoid paying their expensive refueling charges.
  • Check for Recalls: Before you drive off, do a quick visual check of the car and ensure there are no outstanding safety recalls. This is a good practice anywhere.
  • Pack for Variable Weather: Always have an extra layer and rain gear in the car, as Juneau's weather can change rapidly, even in summer.
  • Consider Your Itinerary: If you're only in Juneau for a day and plan a structured tour, you might not need a car. If you want to explore independently, a car is invaluable.

Common Car Rental Mistakes Travelers Make

Even seasoned travelers can fall into common traps when renting a car. Being aware of these potential pitfalls in Juneau can save you time, money, and stress.

  • Not Booking Early in Peak Season: This is the biggest mistake. Arriving in Juneau in July without a reservation is a risky gamble that often results in no car being available.
  • Ignoring the Fine Print on Insurance: Assuming your credit card insurance covers everything without checking the policy can lead to unexpected charges if damage occurs.
  • Skipping a Pre-Inspection: Failing to thoroughly inspect the car for existing dings and scratches and having the rental agent note them on the contract can make you liable for pre-existing damage.
  • Forgetting an IDP: Even though it's not strictly required by law, having an International Driving Permit provides a clear English translation of your license and can smooth over interactions with local authorities or rental agents.
  • Underestimating Driving Distances: While the road system is limited, the distances can be deceiving. A drive to the end of the road and back is a full-day commitment.
  • Leaving Valuables Visible: Juneau is safe, but opportunistic theft can happen. Never leave bags, electronics, or other valuables in plain sight in a parked car.

Real Travel Experience Renting a Car in Juneau, Alaska

Last September, a couple from Australia landed at JNU with a mission: to see humpback whales and a glacier up close, on their own terms. They'd booked a mid-sized SUV online a month prior, a decision they were thankful for when they saw the "No Vacancy" signs at the rental counters. After a quick shuttle to the lot, they were soon behind the wheel, driving out of the airport and onto Egan Drive. Their first unplanned stop was a pullout along the Mendenhall River, where they watched a black bear fishing for salmon. Later, they drove to the Shrine of St. Therese, where they had the windswept, beautiful grounds almost entirely to themselves. The freedom to linger at Eagle Beach until the sunset painted the Chilkat Mountains in shades of pink and gold was, as they later wrote in a guestbook, "worth every penny of the rental."

International Driving Permit for Travelers Visiting Juneau, Alaska

For international visitors, the question of an International Driving Permit (IDP) is a common one. Alaska state law does not strictly require an IDP for visitors with a valid driver's license from their home country, provided the license is in English. However, if your license is not printed in English, obtaining an IDP is highly recommended, as it provides a standardized English translation that rental car agents and law enforcement officers can easily understand. Even if your license is in English, an IDP can serve as an additional, widely recognized form of identification.

Obtaining an IDP is a straightforward process that must be done in your home country before you travel. In most countries, it is issued by the national automobile association (such as the AAA in the United States or the CAA in Canada, though for international travelers it would be the equivalent in their own country). You will typically need to present a valid driver's license, two passport-sized photos, and pay a small fee. The IDP is generally valid for one year from the date of issue and must be accompanied by your original driver's license to be valid. While not mandatory for all, carrying an IDP provides peace of mind and ensures a hassle-free experience should you need to present your credentials.

Frequently Asked Questions about Car Rental in Juneau

Winter in Juneau (October–March) brings snow and ice. We strongly recommend renting a 4WD or AWD vehicle for better traction. Always check the latest road conditions on the Alaska 511 website or call 511 before heading out, especially to mountain areas. Drive slowly, increase following distances, and be prepared for slippery conditions. Our vehicles come equipped with all-season or snow tires, but careful driving is essential for safety.

The minimum age to rent a car in Juneau is typically 21. However, drivers under the age of 25 are subject to a mandatory 'young driver surcharge' applied per day. This fee covers the increased insurance risk. Drivers aged 25 and over generally avoid this extra fee. Please ensure you have a valid credit card and license ready at pickup regardless of age.

If your driver's license is in a language that does not use the English (Latin) alphabet, such as Russian, Japanese, or Arabic, you are required to present a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your original license. If your license is in English, or a Latin-based language like Spanish or German, an IDP is recommended but not strictly required, though it serves as a helpful translation. Your original license must always be presented.

Most rental companies in Juneau operate on a 'Full-to-Full' policy. You receive the vehicle with a full tank of gas, and you must return it full to avoid refueling charges. If you don't refill it, we will charge a significantly higher rate per gallon plus a service fee. Pre-purchase fuel options are sometimes available if you prefer to return the tank empty, but this is usually non-refundable.

Generally, no. Most rental agreements originating in Juneau strictly prohibit taking the vehicle onto the Alaska Marine Highway System ferry to leave the Juneau road system (e.g., to Gustavus, Haines, or Skagway). Because Juneau is not connected by road to the rest of North America, the vehicle must remain within the Juneau area. Violating this policy voids your insurance and incurs severe penalties.

A security deposit is required at the time of pickup and is typically held as a pre-authorization on a major credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) in the renter's name. Debit cards are sometimes accepted at the end of the rental or for specific locations, but they often require a larger hold and a credit check. The hold amount varies by vehicle class but is usually several hundred dollars and is released upon safe return.

Basic liability insurance is required by law and included in your rental rate. However, this basic coverage has minimum limits. We offer an optional Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) which reduces your financial responsibility if the rental car is damaged. CDW is not insurance but a waiver. You should check if your personal auto insurance or credit card offers rental coverage to avoid purchasing duplicate protection.

All our vehicles come with 24/7 roadside assistance. In case of a breakdown, call the number provided in your rental documents immediately. If you are involved in an accident, first ensure everyone is safe and call 911 if there are injuries. Then, file a police report and contact our office as soon as possible. Do not attempt repairs yourself. You are responsible for the vehicle until you have spoken with us.

On-street parking in downtown Juneau is free but limited to two consecutive hours per day. For longer stays, use off-street lots like the Marine Parking Garage (MPG) or the Downtown Transit Center. Payment in these lots is managed via the 'Park Smarter' mobile app or nearby pay stations, costing $0.75 per hour. Parking is enforced Monday–Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM. Always display payment properly to avoid fines up to $300.

Yes, you can add additional drivers to the rental agreement. There is typically a daily fee (e.g., $15 per day) for each extra driver. A spouse or domestic partner who meets all licensing requirements is often authorized at no additional charge. All additional drivers must be present at the time of rental with their valid driver's license to be added to the contract.

We offer one-way rentals within the Juneau area. For example, you can pick up a car downtown and drop it off at the Juneau International Airport (JNU). However, due to Juneau's remote location, we do not offer one-way rentals to other cities. The airport location has an after-hours drop box; simply park in a designated Enterprise/National spot and deposit the keys.

Most standard daily, weekly, and monthly rentals in Juneau come with unlimited mileage. This allows you to explore the road system from Echo Cove to the end of the road at Thane without worrying about extra charges. However, some deeply discounted online rates or specialty vehicles might have daily mileage caps. Always check your rental agreement to confirm your specific mileage terms.

For the drive out to Mendenhall Glacier (Glacier Spur Road) and further north to Eagle Beach and the Shrine of St. Therese, a standard 2WD sedan is usually sufficient during the summer months. However, if you plan to drive on rough gravel roads (like Fish Creek Road) or are visiting in winter/spring, a SUV or all-wheel-drive vehicle is highly recommended for better ground clearance and handling.

Yes, child safety seats are available for rent, but they must be requested in advance to ensure availability. Alaska law requires children under specific ages, heights, and weights to be in approved car seats or booster seats. Alternatively, you are welcome to bring your own seat to ensure a perfect fit for your child. There is a nominal daily fee for renting a seat from us.

We offer free cancellation on most standard reservations up to 24 to 48 hours before your scheduled pickup time. If you cancel after that window or fail to show up, a penalty equal to one or two days' rental may apply. Rates for prepaid bookings are often non-refundable. We always recommend checking the specific policy listed on your confirmation email before booking.

No, there are no toll roads or toll bridges in the Juneau road system. Unlike the Lower 48, all highways and roads in the Juneau area are public and free to use. However, parking in downtown lots and garages does require payment via mobile app or pay station during enforcement hours, but this is not a road toll.

Many rental companies in Juneau have a strict no-pets policy due to potential allergies and cleaning requirements for the next renter. However, some locations may allow small, crated pets for an additional cleaning fee. It is essential that you disclose this at the time of booking. Returning a vehicle with pet hair or odors without prior approval will result in a substantial detailing charge.

"The car itself was a brand new RAV4, really nice to drive. Check-in was a bit chaotic, the line was moving slowly and the system seemed down. But once we got the keys, it was smooth sailing down the coast. Just be patient."

"We docked in Juneau for 12 hours. Shuttle picked us up right from the dock. We rented a convertible for the scenic drive. An experience of a lifetime. Only minor glitch was the tire pressure light came on, but they sorted it quickly."

"Vi hyrde en stor SUV för vår fisketur. Disken i Juneau var lätt att hitta och killen som hjälpte oss gav oss några riktigt bra rekommendationer för lunchställen. Bilen svalde all vår utrustning utan problem."

"Roads around Juneau are stunning and this car made it better. We got a Mustang convertible and had the best time driving out to the Shrine. Check-out was super fast, we didn't even have to wait."

"Ήρθαμε από την Ελλάδα για τον μήνα του μέλιτος. Το αυτοκίνητο ήταν ολοκαίνουργιο και ο υπάλληλος πολύ ευγενικός. Μας βοήθησε να βρούμε την καλύτερη διαδρομή για το Mendenhall. Το συστήνω ανεπιφύλακτα."

"Everything in Alaska is expensive, but at least the car was new. We got a mid-size SUV. The rental process was smooth, though I wish they had more Russian-speaking staff. We managed with English though. Car was clean."

"Alles top. Auto wie bestellt, Preis wie vereinbart. Die Fahrt von Juneau zum Ende der Straße war ein Traum. Einziger kleiner Wehrmutstropfen: Die Scheibenwaschanlage war leer. Aber sonst perfekt."

"Visited in late November, snow on the ground. Really appreciated that the car came with proper winter tires and an ice scraper. Italian drivers aren't used to this stuff, but the car handled it perfectly. Felt safe going to the glacier."

"Not the fanciest car on the lot but it ran good and didn't give me any trouble. The pick-up line was a bit slow, only one person working the counter, but she was nice. Got me to the Shrine of St. Therese and back with ease. Good value."
