Washington ehliyeti ile Belgium ülkesinde araç kullanma rehberi.
A valid Washington State driving licence is recognised for driving an ordinary car in Belgium as a tourist or short-term visitor, provided the driver is at least 18. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is not separately required by the Belgian visitor guidance for this recognised U.S. licence. U.S. authorities advise obtaining an IDP for overseas driving, and named Belgian rental firms impose additional documentation rules. The 185-day Belgian rule concerns registered residents, not a fixed tourist stay.
You can drive a car on a short visit with the original, valid Washington licence. An IDP is useful when hiring a car, and the appropriate U.S.-issued version is the 1949 Geneva Convention permit. Neither the licence nor an IDP by itself removes vehicle insurance, rental-age or residency conditions.
Belgium is a separate national jurisdiction from Washington, a U.S. state. The U.S. Department of State confirms that adults with valid U.S. licences may drive in Belgium as tourists or short-term visitors. Belgium's Federal Public Service Mobility and Transport also lists Washington by name in its United States foreign-licence exchange schedule, separately from Washington, D.C. Its schedule maps the Washington Basic Driver category to Belgian category B, the ordinary-car class. Commercial classes have separate conditional mappings, which should not be treated as blanket authority to drive trucks or buses while visiting.
Belgian guidance permits the recognised national licence for a short visit without stating that an IDP must accompany it. The U.S. State Department's general overseas-driving advice nevertheless tells travellers to obtain an IDP. The United States and Belgium are parties to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic, and the U.S. permit uses the 1949 Geneva model. USAGov identifies AAA and AATA as authorised American issuers and states that an IDP is valid for one year. Carry it with the original licence, never instead of it. A separate certified translation is not stated as a general requirement for this tourist licence, but Avis offers a notarised English translation as an alternative to an IDP for its rentals, and Belgian municipalities may demand a sworn translation when processing an exchange.
There is no verified fixed number of tourist-driving days that can be assigned to a Washington licence. The Belgian transport authority instead sets a 185-day threshold measured from registration in a Belgian municipality for holders of recognised non-European licences. They may drive during that initial registered period, subject to licence validity. A Belgian licence cannot be issued through exchange until 185 days of registration, although the application can begin earlier. The municipality must assess the recognised document model, valid categories, authenticity and issue/residence circumstances. If exchange is unavailable, Belgian theory and practical driving tests are required.
A licence accepted for road use is not automatically sufficient at the rental counter. These two companies publish different ways of satisfying their additional documentation conditions:
| Company | Published requirement for a Washington licence | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Enterprise | Valid licence, IDP for non-EU licence holders, passport and credit card. Minimum age 21. | Belgium rental rules |
| Avis | Licence held for one year, plus IDP or notarised English translation for a non-European licence used outside its issuing country. | Belgium rental FAQs |
Belgian local-police guidance calls for the original driving licence and the applicable original vehicle-registration, insurance and technical-inspection documents during a roadside check. Keep the physical Washington licence accessible. For a rental, confirm where the vehicle paperwork is kept and bring the passport or other identity document stipulated by the hire company. The checked police guidance does not impose an IDP for all Washington licence holders.
Belgian FPS Economy identifies third-party motor liability insurance as compulsory. The insurance certificate belongs with the vehicle documents. Enterprise states that its hire fleet carries third-party liability cover, subject to the rental agreement, while the U.S. State Department cautions that a personal U.S. policy may not cover overseas driving. Check the policy rather than assuming cover is void or guaranteed because of IDP status.
The State Department's permission for U.S. visitors applies from age 18. Enterprise's minimum rental age is 21, a separate company restriction. Washington's own licensing authority distinguishes motorcycle endorsements from ordinary driver licensing. Belgium's Washington exchange table lists an older-style two-wheel motorcycle endorsement entry with Belgian category B rather than category A. That administrative exchange entry does not establish motorcycle permission for a visiting Washington rider. Seek category-specific confirmation before riding a motorcycle or operating a commercial vehicle.
For an ordinary-car holiday, bring the original valid Washington licence, check that the vehicle is insured, and obtain a 1949 Geneva IDP before departure if you plan to rent. Enterprise demands it, while Avis also publishes a notarised-translation alternative. If settling in Belgium, ask your municipality to check your exact licence and categories early enough to address the 185-day registration threshold.
