Washington ehliyeti ile Armenia ülkesinde araç kullanma rehberi.
A valid Washington driver licence can be used for temporary driving in Armenia subject to Armenian recognition conditions. The US Department of State says travellers must obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) before arrival and limits foreign-licence driving to three months from entry. Armenian law also has translation and category conditions. The precise legal treatment of the US-issued 1949-model IDP requires confirmation with Armenia's licensing authority.
For an ordinary visit, travel with your original Washington licence, an authorised US-issued IDP and your passport. US government guidance expressly calls for the IDP. SIXT Armenia independently requires one from US customers under its rental policy. Neither statement establishes that every rental operator applies identical conditions.
Armenia's legislation provides a translation exception when all entries on certain foreign licences are written or duplicated in Latin letters. An English-language Washington licence may satisfy that condition, but the actual document must be checked. Do not assume that the presence of an IDP automatically resolves every translation or recognition question.
Washington issues driving licences within the United States. Armenia applies its national rules to those licences rather than treating Washington as a separate country with its own international road-traffic agreement.
Article 28 of Armenia's Law on Ensuring Road Traffic Safety recognises foreign national and international driving licences that satisfy the applicable legal conditions. It also provides a conditional recognition route for licences issued by countries outside a shared road-traffic treaty framework, involving reciprocity and, where applicable, translation requirements.
The law restricts foreign-licence driving to the corresponding authorised vehicle categories and subcategories, subject to Armenian minimum ages. A standard Washington passenger-car licence does not independently authorise motorcycles, commercial vehicles or other categories outside its privileges. An exact category-by-category equivalence between Washington classifications and Armenian classifications was not verified.
The US Department of State's Armenia guidance states that travellers must obtain an IDP before arrival. This is explicit official US government guidance and should be followed. It should not, however, be mistaken for a complete legal analysis of every foreign-licence recognition provision in Armenian law.
AAA issues US International Driving Permits under the 1949 Geneva Convention framework and explains that an IDP supplements rather than replaces a valid state driving licence. A Washington licence holder should therefore obtain the authorised US-issued permit, not a document marketed as an Armenian or Vienna Convention permit without a valid issuing basis.
Armenian legislation also refers to the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, particularly in relation to qualifying foreign licences and exchange arrangements. The fact that the United States issues a 1949-model permit does not by itself prove that Armenia accepts that model under every applicable statutory provision. The exact convention-based acceptance position for this pair is unverified – confirm with official authority.
For practical travel, obtain the genuine US-issued IDP and retain the original Washington licence. The permit is not a substitute for the national licence.
The US Department of State says foreign-licence driving is permitted for up to three months from the date of entry into Armenia. Travellers should be ready to show their passport to establish that date. Three calendar months should not be stored or interpreted as an automatic fixed number of days.
Armenian legislation expressly provides a three-month rule for Armenian citizens, including dual citizens, holding qualifying foreign licences. That citizenship-specific provision should not be presented as identical to every rule applying to non-citizen visitors.
For a longer stay, the US Department of State advises obtaining an Armenian driving licence. Armenia has statutory rules governing exchange of qualifying foreign licences, including provisions linked to the 1968 Vienna Convention. Automatic exchange eligibility for a Washington licence, any testing exemption and a Washington-specific resident conversion deadline are unverified – confirm with official authority.
SIXT Armenia publishes a specific rule for US customers. They must possess an international driving licence in addition to their national licence. At collection, foreign customers must also present their passport and a full, valid driving licence.

| SIXT Armenia | US customers need an international driving licence alongside their national licence. A passport is required at vehicle collection. | SIXT Armenia rental terms |
SIXT lists a general minimum driver age of 18 and additional restrictions for selected vehicle categories, including higher minimum ages and licence-holding periods. The conditions of the booked vehicle group determine the applicable rental requirements. These restrictions are contractual and must not be confused with Armenian legal minimum driving ages.
No named rental-company policy beyond SIXT was verified for this pair. Ask the chosen rental branch to confirm acceptance of a US-issued 1949-model IDP before booking.
Carry the original Washington driver licence, your IDP and passport. The US Department of State specifically identifies the passport as evidence of the entry date relevant to temporary foreign-licence driving. Armenian law also provides that non-citizens using an international driving permit must have their national driving licence.
No separate Washington-specific police inspection procedure was established. Do not assume that an IDP replaces the original licence or that a rental agreement substitutes for identification.
Vehicle insurance is a separate issue. The US Department of State publishes accident instructions for Armenia, including contacting police and preserving the accident scene for official documentation. SIXT publishes its own vehicle-protection and territorial-use conditions. The applicable coverage, exclusions and claims procedure should be checked in the actual policy or rental agreement. No special insurance exemption or automatic coverage rule was verified for Washington licence holders.
Armenian law treats Armenian citizens and dual citizens differently in certain foreign-licence provisions. A traveller who also holds Armenian citizenship should not rely solely on guidance written for ordinary foreign visitors.
The law also restricts employment or entrepreneurial activity directly involving driving with foreign national or international licences, subject to specified exceptions. Temporary permission to drive a private passenger car therefore does not automatically authorise professional driving.
Armenia's statutory translation exception concerns licences whose entries are entirely written or duplicated in Latin letters. If any relevant entries on a Washington licence do not meet that condition, obtain clarification about the notarised Armenian translation requirement. Foreign-licence recognition also remains subject to authorised vehicle categories and Armenian minimum ages.
Obtain an authorised US-issued IDP through AAA while your Washington licence remains valid. Take both physical documents and your passport. Check the licence for any entries that could affect Armenia's Latin-letter translation exception.
If you intend to rent, confirm the precise IDP model accepted by the rental branch and check the selected vehicle group's driver-age and licence-holding conditions. For an ordinary visit, plan around the US Department of State's three-month foreign-licence guidance. Seek confirmation from Armenia's licensing authority if you have dual Armenian citizenship, intend to become resident or need to drive beyond the temporary visitor period.
This page was checked against the Armenian legislation, US Department of State guidance, AAA information and SIXT Armenia terms listed above on 2026-10-19. The check date is not a claim that any law changed on that date. Unresolved matters include the precise Armenian statutory treatment of the US-issued 1949-model IDP, Washington licence category equivalence and eligibility for resident licence exchange.
