Washington ehliyeti ile Bahrain ülkesinde araç kullanma rehberi.
A valid Washington licence can support private-car driving in Bahrain, but the General Directorate of Traffic must approve its use. That national-licence permission lasts at most three months from entry. A U.S.-issued International Driving Permit (IDP) is officially recommended, and Bahrain Tourism guidance says to carry one. Because the sources differ on a universal IDP requirement, confirm approval before driving. A separate translation requirement was not established.
The key distinction is between driving on an approved U.S. state licence and driving with a foreign IDP. These are dealt with in different articles of Bahrain's traffic regulations.
Washington is a U.S. state, not a separate treaty party. Article 251 of Bahrain's implementing traffic regulations covers private-car licences issued outside the Gulf Cooperation Council. The General Directorate of Traffic may approve such a licence for private-car use for up to three months after entry. The regulation does not give automatic approval to every Washington document.
The U.S. Department of State recommends an IDP for Bahrain and warns that rental firms may ask for one. Bahrain's official tourism site instead says visiting drivers need both their home licence and an IDP. Article 251 permits approved national private-car licences, while Articles 294 and 295 separately recognise and regulate foreign IDPs. Do not treat the U.S. recommendation as a complete statement of Bahraini law.
The U.S. issues the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP, relevant because the United States and Bahrain are both parties to that convention. Bahrain also participates in the 1968 Vienna Convention, but that does not turn a U.S.-issued permit into the 1968 model. An IDP accompanies the Washington licence rather than replacing it. AAA Washington provides an application route, and AAA and AATA are authorised U.S. issuers. No separate certified-translation rule for an English-language Washington licence was established.
Article 251 gives an approved non-GCC national private-car licence a maximum of three calendar months from the date of entry, regardless of residence classification. That is not necessarily 90 days. Separately, Article 294 recognises foreign IDPs for their period of validity, subject to the Article 295 procedure. If relying on the foreign national licence after three months, the holder must seek Bahraini licensing. Bahrain's government offers evaluation of foreign licences for citizens and residents but does not promise automatic exchange of a Washington licence. A residence permit should not be treated as proof that visitor permission continues.
SIXT's Bahrain terms require international customers to present an IDP, a valid full licence held for at least one year, and identity documentation. Its Bahrain page also states that the minimum rental age is 18, with additional conditions for younger renters or certain vehicles. This is company policy, not a general statutory requirement. Ask the booked branch whether it handles the traffic-authority endorsement.
Bahrain's foreign-licence stamping service lists the original foreign private licence, original international licence and passport among its conditions or documents. Article 295 requires a foreign IDP to be presented to the Traffic Directorate for review and recording. Tourists may use it immediately on arrival if they present it to the authority on the following day. Rental firms may be authorised to process approval.
For accident reports, the U.S. State Department says police request identification, the licence and a telephone number. It warns that moving a vehicle after a major collision before filing the police report can affect insurance coverage, and says accident reports must be filed within 24 hours. Confirm the actual insurance terms with the vehicle provider.
The Article 251 route covers private cars only. Washington motorcycle or commercial authorisations do not automatically establish eligibility for those classes in Bahrain. Washington's licensing authority treats motorcycles and commercial vehicles as requiring additional entitlements. Article 294 excludes foreign IDP renewals completed while the holder is in Bahrain. Drivers under 18 should not assume their Washington licence suffices, since Bahrain's ordinary licence eligibility begins at 18.
Obtain the 1949 Geneva IDP from AAA or AATA before departure, keep the physical Washington licence with it, and confirm the Traffic Directorate's approval and presentation arrangements. For a rental, follow the specific counter's written document rules. For a longer stay, start a Bahraini licence evaluation rather than assuming an automatic extension.
