Utah ehliyeti ile Barbados ülkesinde araç kullanma rehberi.
Yes. A visitor with a valid Utah driving licence can drive an ordinary car in Barbados within the vehicle classes that licence permits. Barbados abolished its separate visitor driving permit on 15 October 2025. The current official policy does not require an International Driving Permit (IDP), and no separate translation requirement was found for an English-language Utah licence. The older 12-month temporary-stay rule needs care because published permit guidance has not all been updated.
The key distinction is between the abolished Barbados visitor driving permit and an international IDP. They are different documents. A Utah visitor needs a valid national driving licence, not the discontinued local visitor permit. No government recommendation specifically advising Utah licence holders to obtain an IDP was verified. A rental provider may nevertheless have its own documentation rules.
Utah is a U.S. state, while Barbados is a separate sovereign country. Section 2 of the Barbados Road Traffic Act, as amended in 2017, includes authorisation granted by another jurisdiction within the definition of a driving licence. Section 61 requires a valid licence for the class of vehicle being driven. The Utah licence falls under this general foreign-licence recognition rule, rather than a special Utah-Barbados agreement.
The Utah Driver License Division identifies its regular driving licence as Class D, covering non-commercial motor vehicles other than motorcycles. A valid full Class D licence therefore provides the relevant driving entitlement for an ordinary passenger car. It does not extend to motorcycles or commercial vehicles merely because the holder is visiting another country.
The Barbados Revenue Authority policy issued in October 2025 requires visitors to hold a valid driving licence. It does not impose an additional IDP requirement. The Road Traffic Act recognises valid foreign driving authorisations, and the older international-circulation rules expressly contemplate both convention permits and domestic foreign permits.
No Barbados-specific official recommendation to obtain an IDP with a Utah licence was verified. An IDP may still be useful if a rental provider requests one. This is a practical or contractual consideration, not proof of a legal requirement.
If an IDP is obtained for Barbados, the relevant format is the 1949 Geneva Convention model. The published Barbados International Circulation Order includes that convention permit form, and the UK government lists Barbados under the 1949 model. USAGov identifies the American Automobile Association (AAA) and American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA) as the two authorised U.S. IDP issuers. An IDP must accompany the underlying valid licence and does not replace it.
The ordinary Utah licence is written in English. The current Barbados sources checked do not specify a separate translation requirement for that licence. A rental company may nevertheless apply its own document-verification policy.
The published Road Traffic (Motor Vehicles (International Circulation)) Order, 1960, describes an allowance for someone making a temporary stay in Barbados to drive on a foreign domestic permit for 12 months from the last entry, provided the permit covers the vehicle class. The same older provision also contains visitor registration and fee requirements that conflict with the Barbados Revenue Authority policy abolishing visitor driving permits in October 2025.
The older 12-month provision should therefore not be treated as an unconditional guarantee that every foreign driver may continue driving for that period, regardless of immigration or residence status. A definitive current maximum for a Utah visitor has not been established from the updated administrative guidance.
For someone becoming resident, Utah-specific licence exchange eligibility, conversion procedures and deadlines are unverified – confirm with official authority at the Barbados Licensing Authority. The visitor rules should not be assumed to confer permanent driving rights.
The Barbados Revenue Authority requires visitors to present a valid driving licence to the rental agency when booking or collecting a vehicle. From 15 October 2025, the former visitor-permit process was replaced by a car-rental levy of BBD 5 per day, capped at BBD 35 per rental contract. The levy is a rental charge, not an IDP fee.
| Company | Published requirement | Source checked |
|---|---|---|
| SIXT | Full, valid driving licence with passport or identity card. Minimum Barbados rental age of 25. Additional verification may apply under its general IDP guidance. | SIXT Barbados rental page and general IDP help centre |
| Hertz | Valid driving licence, payment card in the renter name and another form of identification. Additional requirements may vary by location. | Hertz Barbados rental page |
These published Barbados-specific requirements do not establish a universal rental-company IDP obligation for Utah drivers. SIXT general guidance raises possible IDP or translation requirements for some licences from countries outside the 1968 Vienna Convention, while its Barbados-specific checklist simply requests a full licence and identification. Confirm the requirements with the actual pickup branch before paying. A company policy must not be mistaken for Barbados law.
Section 74 of the Road Traffic Act requires a driver on a public road to possess a driving licence or government-issued identification card and produce it for examination when requested by a uniformed police officer or transport inspector. If the driver produces an identification card instead of the licence, the licence must be presented at the police station designated by the officer or inspector within 24 hours. Carrying the original Utah licence avoids relying on that alternative procedure.
The U.S. Department of State advises that Barbados rental companies provide basic car insurance and recommends checking the details with the rental provider. SIXT offers additional insurance and protection packages for Barbados rentals and says these are optional purchases. Neither statement establishes the exact cover supplied under an individual booking. Check the rental agreement for liability, excess amounts and exclusions.
Foreign-licence recognition is limited to vehicles the licence holder is authorised to operate. A regular Utah Class D licence does not establish entitlement to ride a motorcycle or drive a commercial vehicle. A learner-only permit does not provide the same entitlement as a full licence.
Age also matters. The older Barbados international-circulation order sets a minimum age of 18 for its visitor provision, and the 2017 amendment addresses a minimum age of 18 for local licensing of self-driven or hired cars. SIXT separately requires renters in Barbados to be at least 25. A person who received a Utah licence before turning 18 should obtain direct confirmation from the Barbados Licensing Authority rather than assume the Utah minimum licensing age applies abroad.
For an ordinary visit, bring your original, unexpired Utah licence and the identification required by your rental company. A full Class D licence supplies the relevant entitlement for a standard passenger car. There is no need to arrange the discontinued Barbados visitor driving permit.
An IDP is not established as an additional legal requirement for this situation. Check the rental provider policy before departure, however, and obtain the 1949 model through AAA or AATA if needed. Confirm minimum rental age, the permitted vehicle category and the insurance terms before collecting the keys. Longer stays or a move to Barbados deserve a separate check with the Barbados Licensing Authority.
This information was checked against the listed legal, government and rental-company sources on 2026-10-26. Some official webpages still describe the visitor permit that the Barbados Revenue Authority abolished on 15 October 2025. The newer Barbados policy is used for the current permit requirement. No change occurring on the verification date is implied.
