Oklahoma ehliyeti ile Albania ülkesinde araç kullanma rehberi.
A holder of a valid Oklahoma driving licence can drive in Albania only with the required supporting documents. Current U.S. Department of State guidance says U.S. drivers must carry both their valid U.S. licence and an International Driving Permit (IDP). For this origin-destination pair, the applicable U.S.-issued permit is the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP. Albanian law also limits use of a foreign licence by residence status.
Carry the valid Oklahoma licence and a 1949 IDP together. The Albanian Road Code allows foreign-licence driving only while the holder has not been resident in Albania for more than one year. A separate Albanian translation is not needed when the convention-model IDP is carried, but non-conforming documents require an official Albanian translation or equivalent document.
Article 133 of the Albanian Road Code permits a driver holding a foreign driving licence or international driving licence to drive vehicles for which that document is valid, provided the driver has not been resident in Albania for more than one year. For an Oklahoma licence holder, the U.S. Department of State gives the more specific practical legal instruction that both the valid U.S. licence and an IDP are required to legally drive in Albania.
The rule does not grant every vehicle category automatically. It applies only to categories covered by the licence and IDP. Article 133 also requires any professional-competence certificate or other qualification document that the issuing state requires for special vehicles.
The IDP is legally required for this pair under current U.S. Department of State Albania guidance, which says U.S. drivers must have both documents to legally drive or rent a car. The same guidance tells travellers to obtain the IDP in the United States before travel.
The applicable permit is the 1949 Geneva Convention IDP. The United Nations Treaty Collection lists both Albania and the United States as parties to the 1949 Convention on Road Traffic. U.S. Department of State guidance identifies AAA and AATA as the authorized U.S. IDP issuers meeting the 1949 Convention standard. The IDP supplements rather than replaces the Oklahoma licence.
Albanian Road Code Article 133 does not state a fixed tourist-day allowance. Instead, it permits use of the foreign licence or IDP only while the holder has not been resident in Albania for more than one year, so no fixed number belongs in the visitor-days database field.
For residence, Article 134 and current DPSHTRR guidance are important for U.S. licences. DPSHTRR accepts applications to convert a valid U.S. licence from a person holding an Albanian residence permit with a term over one year. For U.S. and Canadian licences, the current DPSHTRR procedure requires confirmation about the licence from the issuing authority, bearing an apostille, notarized and accompanied by a certified translation.
The legal driving rule and the rental company's desk policy are separate. U.S. Department of State guidance says a U.S. driver needs both a valid U.S. licence and an IDP to legally drive or rent in Albania. Named rental companies publish different additional checks.
| Company | Published requirement checked | Source checked |
|---|---|---|
| Sixt Albania | Full valid driving licence held for at least two years, plus passport or identity document. Under Sixt's own document policy, an IDP is required for licences printed in a non-Roman alphabet. | Sixt Albania country-specific rental information, checked 2026-09-30 |
| Europcar Albania | Normal national licence, plus an international driving licence when the national licence is in a language different from the renting country and/or uses characters that cannot be read there. The international document is valid only with the national licence. | Europcar Tirana rental information, checked 2026-09-30 |
Because these company policies differ, confirm the exact booking terms in advance. A company's willingness to accept a document set does not override the legal requirement stated in current U.S. government guidance.
U.S. Department of State guidance says to carry the U.S. passport, driver's licence, IDP, and vehicle registration or insurance documents while driving. This is the clearest verified document-carrying guidance for a U.S. visitor and does not imply that police routinely request every item at each stop.
No Oklahoma-specific insurance coverage rule was verified. U.S. Department of State guidance warns that U.S. auto insurance may not cover driving abroad and that accepted coverage may still fail to meet local minimum requirements. Confirm the applicable cover with the insurer or rental company before driving.
Professional or special vehicle use can require additional competence certificates beyond the licence and IDP. The one-year rule concerns residence in Albania, not a simple count of tourist days. Once the holder has been resident for more than one year, the foreign licence or IDP no longer satisfies Article 133 for driving, and the DPSHTRR conversion route becomes relevant.
Use the Oklahoma licence and a valid 1949 Geneva Convention IDP together. Obtain the IDP from AAA or AATA before leaving the United States, and carry the passport plus the vehicle registration or insurance documents. For a rental, check the booked company's age, licence-tenure, payment and deposit rules, but do not treat a more permissive desk policy as a substitute for the IDP.
